  • Patent number: 4106378
Abstract: In circular saws, especially of the so-called cold type, for steel and nonferrous metals, there is a certain play in the gear drive or power transmission between the prime mover such as an electric motor and the saw blade proper. Especially during the start and during the completion of a sawing operation such play causes a temporary stopping of the blade. To avoid such play a brake mechanism with blade engaging brake shoes is provided which is energized and de-energized in response to the current consumption of the electric saw drive motor or in response to position responsive switch means, whereby the brake is effective during the start and during the stopping of the saw blade.

  • Patent number: 4103580
Abstract: There is disclosed a method of and apparatus for developing on tape and applying a pre-selected die design, etc., defined by spaced drilled holes, to a die board automatically by a tape controlled apparatus, and to automatically produce properly dimensioned cutting rule for the design. A computer is programmed to produce information which is transferred to a tape, or the like, fed to a numerical control machine to energize selected mechanisms to physically apply a pre-selected design formed by spaced drilled holes, routing, etc., to a die board for reception of spaced tangs or legs of cutting rule, or the like, or other workings. The information from the computer also is utilized, by means of an intermediate tape or the like, to energize a numerically controlled cutting rule machine to automatically produce cutting rule segments of the proper number and length for mounting in the drilled design on the cutting board.

  • Patent number: 4103574
Abstract: A tool assembly in which the tool retainers are provided with spring loaded plungers which snap into place in detents provided in the tools and are then locked in the detents by set screws engaging the shanks of the plungers. This prevents inadvertent displacement of the tools, particularly punches, from their retainers, especially displacement due to jarring or vibration during manufacturing of the tool assembly. The retainers are attached to their respective shoes by bolts having tool engageable sockets in both their leading ends and their heads. This facilitates manufacture of the tool assemblies while permitting replacement of the tool retainers without removing the shoes from the press in which they are mounted. Additionally, a stripper plate may be mounted by means of bolts having tool engageable sockets in either end to permit the plate to be removed from the press without removing the shoe to which the stripper plate is attached.

  • Patent number: 4100828
Abstract: A multicell battery case, adaptable for use with a variety of cell-pack sizes, is molded with universal-sized cell compartments and opposing spacer-ribs projecting a predetermined distance into the cell compartments from the compartments' walls so as to provide an inter-rib gap across the compartment substantially equal to the narrowest cell pack useful with that case. The case is thereafter adapted for use with thicker cell packs by trimming back the opposing ribs to increase the gap therebetween to approximately the thickness of the cell pack actually destined for use with that case. Preferably, rib-shaving blades are inserted into the case and guided in spaced relation from the rib-bearing walls to remove distal portions of the ribs. Means are provided to detach the shavings from the container at their roots.

  • Patent number: 4097180
Abstract: The specification and drawings disclose a collapsible tap of the type including an elongated, cylindrical body or housing having an axially extending actuating plunger mounted for selective movement longitudinally of the body. The outer end of the plunger has a generally conical portion which functions to provide camming surfaces. Suitable chaser cutting elements are mounted for radial movement in the body. Each element includes a surface in engagement with a corresponding camming surface of the plunger such that axial movement of the plunger produces radial movement of the elements. The elements are maintained in engagement with the camming surfaces by clip members which extend radially from the conical portion of the plunger with resilient, laterally directed terminal portions that engage grooves formed in the sides of the elements.

  • Patent number: 4096777
Abstract: There is disclosed woodworking apparatus which is handpowered but permits accurate cuts by unskilled persons comparable to those which might be made by a radial arm or table saw. The apparatus includes a guide in which a handsaw is retained and restrained for cutting motion along the straight line, a supporting surface to support a workpiece in relation to the handsaw, and guides which co-operate with rulers to permit presetting of the apparatus for a desired cut, together with clamping devices which hold the workpiece to the table securely against the motion of the handsaw, at the same time avoiding interference of the clamps with the handsaw as it passes through the workpiece. The guide for the handsaw is formed of very rigid structural material such as steel angle iron which is faced with a plastic material of moderate hardness that resists abrasion or cutting by the handsaw to a considerable degree but is not so hard as to rapidly dull or distort the teeth of the handsaw.

  • Patent number: 4096776
Abstract: A retainer arrangement is disclosed for securing punches, dies or similar machine tool elements within a bore in a tool holder body, the retainer providing for secure and accurately repeatable orientation of the punch or other element within the bore. The retainer comprises a conically tapered pin retainer having a threaded shank portion adapted to be received into a threaded portion of a retainer seat extending into the holder body transversely to the holder bore and having a conically tapered portion partially intersecting the same. The leading end of the tapered pin retainer is tapered to mate with the tapering portion of the retainer seat and with a complementary conical tapered groove formed in the punch shank, to securely retain the punch or other machine element within the holder body, and also to precisely and repeatably orient the same with respect to the holder body bore in receiving the same.

  • Patent number: 4092891
Abstract: Apparatus for cutting rolled steel sections with a web and one or more flanges angled in respect to the web as profiled cutters movable relative to each other on a common axis and kept parallel to each other at the time of cut. The cutter edges for cutting the web of the section extend in an inclined manner at an acute angle with respect to a plane at right-angles to the axis of travel of the cutters. These cutter edges which extend to follow the shape of the flanges at least as far as these extensions are located inside the projection of the section on the normal plane.

  • Patent number: 4092887
Abstract: A method for automatically varying the feed rate of a moving workpiece carriage in the proximity of permissible terminal positions for the carriage in a machine tool. The machine tool includes a numerical control means for controlling the position of the workpiece carriage and means for determining the position of the workpiece carriage in the machine tool. The improvement comprises storing signals corresponding to a plurality of safety positions of the workpiece carriage located within the terminal positions of the carriage in a memory device provided in the numerical control means. The safety position signals are then compared with measured position signals generated by the position determining means which correspond to the position of the workpiece carriage in the machine tool. The feed rate of the workpiece carriage is automatically reduced by the numerical control means when the safety positions are passed by the workpiece carriage as the carriage moves in a direction towards the terminal positions.
