  • Patent number: 4524543
Abstract: Vibratory abrasive contour-finishing method and apparatus in which an axial tool longitudinally vibrated at a high-frequency is rapidly rotated about its longitudinal axis to provide a rapidly reciprocatingly revolving active tool surface for pressure engagement with a shaped surface of a workpiece in the presence of abrasive grits while the tool and the workpiece are relatively displaced translationally to move the active tool surface along the shaped surface to progress the abrasive polishing along it. The load or reciprocatingly revolving resistance encountered by the active tool surface is instantaneously sensed to produce an output signal representing a change therein. A control circuit responds to the output signal and acts on a drive unit for the relative translational displacement between the tool axis and the workpiece so as to maintain the load or resistance substantially constant.

  • Patent number: 4519170
Abstract: A workpiece having a generally cylindrical outer surface centered on an axis is machined by first closing a pair of journal halves having generally semicylindrical inner surfaces of slightly greater diameter than the outer workpiece surface around the workpiece. Then a fluid is pumped under superatmospheric pressure into the space between the journal inner surface and the workpiece outer surface so as to support the workpiece in the journal halves on the liquid generally out of contact with the inner surfaces thereof. The thus supported workpiece is rotated about its axis and a finishing tool is engaged radially against it. The average radial distance between the journal inner surface and workpiece outer surface when the journal halves are closed on the workpiece is equal to more than the sum of the radial deviations of these surfaces from a perfect cylinder. The workpiece is rotated by axially engaging it between a pair of rotatable elements and rotating at least one of the elements.

  • Patent number: 4516445
Abstract: The heads of a pressure vessel are normally attached to the vessel body by studs and nuts arranged in a bolting circle. Each nut is engaged by a wrench, the handle of which is radially outwardly disposed relative to the bolting circle. The outer ends of all the wrench handles have elongated openings slidably engaged by pivot pins that pivotally connect the handles to the ends of turn-buckles, so that the wrenches may all work concurrently. Preferably, the wrenches are ratchet-type socket wrenches. Hydraulic cylinders are attached to some of the wrench handles and impart a back-and-forth movement to the latter for screwing the nuts at a precisely-measured and uniform torque and all simultaneously. The arrangement can be modified to suit different numbers of studs and/or diameters of the bolting circle.

  • Patent number: 4512218
Abstract: In a ratchet wrench of the type having a head which is manually rotatably shiftable for reversing the driving direction or torque-transmitting mode of a socket carried by the wrench and in which the head is also manually depressible to effect release of a socket carried by a drive stud of the wrench, an improved control bar or lever for rotating the head of the wrench to effect socket drive reversal. The control bar surmounts and is attached to the head for pivotal manipulation thereof. An integral end portion of the control bar extends radially beyond a bounding periphery of the head to provide increased torque forces and enhanced ease of manual annular shifting of the head and of the socket drive direction control components coupled thereof. A free end of the control bar is spaced from the wrench to permit depressing the head manually to effect the release of a wrench-carried drive socket.

  • Patent number: 4507989
Abstract: A ratchet tool comprises a tubular body (1) with a handle (2) at one end and a ratchet drive (3) at the other end. The handle mounts a lever mechanism (12) which is operatively connected to the ratchet drive (3) by a plunger (4), a gear mechanism (7) and a flexible member (8). When the lever mechanism (12) is operated linear movement of the plunger (4) translates through the gear mechanism (7) and the flexible member (8) into rotary motion of the ratchet drive (3). With the lever mechanism (12) removed the ratchet tool can be used as a conventional ratchet.
