  • Patent number: 4651828
Abstract: A ball element pivotally mounted on a sleeve that slides within the tubular valve member of a well safety valve has a radial slot extending across its width parallel to and offset from its pivotal axis. A bar extending in secant fashion across the valve member engages the slot, rotating the ball element to open and close the valve as the sleeve slides back and forth. An unslotted outer surface portion of the ball element mates with the valve seat during valve closing.

  • Patent number: 4652250
Abstract: In an automatic variable speed transmission, expansible pulleys function to change the speed ratio between driving and driven shafts. The pulleys are constructed of segments or arms that are pivoted at one end to swing outwardly. Each arm includes a V-shaped groove for receiving a V-belt. At a minimum diameter, the arms form a composite solid body and at a maximum diameter, when each arm is fully pivoted outwardly, a segmented pulley is formed. Automatic speed ratio change is disclosed in both the forward and reverse direction of rotation by proper combination of the pulleys.

  • Patent number: 4651837
Abstract: A rotary well-drilling bit lowered through a drill string to a special orienting, positioning and aligning sub attached to the bottom of the drill string with the aid of mud pressure with the bit approximately 90.degree. from its normal operating position. The drill bit is prepositioned before entering the drill string and utilizes a drill bit positioning means to properly orient and position the drill bit at the bottom of the borehole. Once properly positioned and oriented, a wireline attached motor turns an assembly shaft which raises the drill bit into its bit receptacle. Removal of the drill bit is accomplished by relowering the wireline attached motor and turning the assembly shaft to loosen the shaft from the drill bit and raising the wireline, wireline motor, assembly shaft and drill bit through the drill string.

  • Patent number: 4649993
Abstract: A surface controlled electrically operated solenoid subsurface safety valve is positioned in a well tubing in a well and controlled by an electrical control line extending from the solenoid coil to the well surface. One or more measuring sensors are positioned in the well for measuring a physical property of the well. The input of the sensor is connected to the control line for receiving electrical power and the output of the sensor is connected to the control power for supplying an output signal proportional to the measurement of the physical property. The output signal is distinguishable from the electrical supply current to the solenoid coil. A signal processor at the well surface receives the sensor output. Preferably the sensors are connected in parallel with at least a portion of the solenoid coil.

  • Patent number: 4648147
Abstract: A tension tie member is anchored between two spaced locations on a structure, such as a diagonal cable in a stayed girder bridge. The tie member is supported on the structure adjacent at least one anchor location by an annular bearing member encircling an outer protective casing of the tie member. The bearing member is positioned within an annular chamber in the structure at the point where the tie member extends through the structure toward the anchor location. The diameter of the annular chamber is larger than the diameter of the tie member so that there is a certain amount of play between the bearing member encircling the tie member and the surface of the annular chamber whereby lateral movement of the tie member can occur. With the tie member anchored in place the space between the outside of the bearing member and the inside surface of the annular chamber can be filled with grout to support the tie member.

  • Patent number: 4648741
Abstract: A vibratory concrete screed includes a frame and a substantially horizontal screed blade. A pair of end-mounted winches advance the screed along concrete forms into an area of unfinished plastic concrete. A concrete spreading device is translated back and forth along the length of the screed to partially level the unfinished concrete before engagement by the screed blade. The concrete spreading device includes grading means having distributing means in the form of an auger and metering means in the form of a plow. The auger initially levels and redistributes the plastic concrete while the plow receives the plastic concrete from the trailing edge of the auger and regulates the level of plastic concrete discharged from the concrete spreading device and intercepted by the screed blade. A carriage maintains the grading means at a predetermined elevation in front of the screed blade and translates the spreading device along the length of the screed frame.

  • Patent number: 4648854
Abstract: A variable speed drive of the type having a fixed pulley, a variable pulley mounted on a motor shaft and a drive belt coupling the two pulleys. The motor is pivotally mounted on a frame. An actuator is provided for pivoting the motor and variable pulley through an arc to vary the distance between the pulleys which changes the pitch diameter of the variable pulley and the drive ratio of the system. The variable pulley has one fixed face and one movable face, and a cam system is provided and positioned for engagement upon arcuate movement of the motor to cause a predetermined amount of lateral movement of the motor and variable pulley to compensate for changes in the drive line of the variable pulley to movement of the movable face thereof. In this manner, the cam system maintains the variable pulley, fixed pulley and drive belt in accurate alignment throughout the entire range of movement of the motor and corresponding range of variation in the drive ratio of the system.

  • Patent number: 4648146
Abstract: In the assembly of a tension tie member between spaced anchors when the tie member is made up of a number of individual tension elements, such as steel wires, steel strands or the like, enclosed within a tubular sheathing, the tension elements are inserted individually and successively between the anchors and it is necessary to insert the annular wedges which anchor each element before the tension elements are released from a threading device. To prevent the annular wedges from prematurely entering into the boreholes in the anchor plate, an auxiliary plate is positioned spaced from the anchor plate. The auxiliary plate has at least one through borehole axially alignable with the boreholes in the anchor plate. A tubular section is secured to the auxiliary plate and forms an extension of the borehole therein. An annular wedge to be inserted into one of the boreholes and the anchor plate can be held on the tubular section by resiliently expanding the wedge about the outer surface of the tubular section.
