  • Patent number: 4647246
Abstract: A pit disposed between an unsecured area and a secured area is normally bridged by a generally flat platform which normally forms a continuation of a roadway. The plate is pivoted at the unsecured side of the pit and is normally supported at the protected side by a weight-responsive removable or frangible support so that an unapproved vehicle will cause the support to give 'way and let the platform swing down and thereby entrap the vehicle in the pit. A plate at the protected side of the pit normally lies in the plane of the platform and functions as an extension thereof. When the weight-responsive support gives 'way and the platform swings down, the plate swings up and forms a blast shield across the path of the force of an explosion of a bomb in the entrapped vehicle. When an approved vehicle is to cross into the secured area a normally inoperative support is engaged with the platform so as to bypass the weight-responsive support.

  • Patent number: 4646839
Abstract: Methods of gravel packing a subterranean well located subsea utilizing through-the-flowline techniques are disclosed in which a sand slurry is pumped downwardly through one pipe of a dual pipe string and outwardly through an H-type crossover member (14, 15) into a perforated casing area (20) until the area is fully packed. In one method, the H-type crossover member (14) is provided with a flangible plug (14h) to allow bypass of the sand slurry once the perforated casing area is filled with aggregate. In another method, the gravel packing of the perforated casing area is accomplished utilizing a special TFL tool (25) which provides for injection of the sand slurry through an H-type crossover member (15) into the perforated casing area (20).

  • Patent number: 4646830
Abstract: A mechanical jar having a variable diameter tension ring which can be reciprocated from a large into a small diameter chamber and vice versa. When a fishing tool is connected to the jar, the jar is run downhole and set down, and a mandrel retracts into a barrel, causing a collet to move the ring into the large diameter chamber whereupon the ring expands to a large diameter and telescopingly receives the collet fingers therewithin. As the jar is picked up, the mandrel moves the ring from the large to the small diameter chamber, thereby reducing the diameter of the ring. This action releasably latches the ring and the collet fingers together. Accordingly, a very large axial force must be applied to the mandrel in order to cause the collet to be released from the ring; and, a very small reverse axial force is required for the collet to latch onto the ring.

  • Patent number: 4645006
Abstract: An annulus access valve system having a plurality of valves installed in, and forming a part of, a drill string in a well bore whereby fluid may be pumped into the annulus through the valves individually or in combination as desired. Each valve has a valve body connected to the drill string in which defines a longitudinal opening therethrough and a transverse port therein interconnecting the longitudinal opening with the annulus. A longitudinally slidable valve seats on a replaceable valve seat defining a closed position of the transverse port in the valve. The valve sleeve is biased in the closed position by a spring. An actuator, uniquely sized for a specific valve in the drill string, is utilized to engage the valve sleeve and move it to an open position by hydraulic pressure applied thereabove so that fluids may be pumped down the drill string through the transverse port into the annulus. A flow control valve is positioned in the actuator so that some fluid may be directed therebelow as desired.

  • Patent number: 4643265
Abstract: An unconsolidated or loose core is retrieved and retained within a coring tool by wrapping the core with a resilient thin film sleeve. The sleeve is compacted and stored within a concentric cylindrical storage space outside of the core and within the tool. The thin film compacted sleeve is then drawn from the storage space and wrapped about the core. The thin film sleeve is characterized by having a longitudinal length several times greater than the corresponding longitudinal length of the storage space in which it is compacted and stored. More particularly, the thin film sleeve is compactly stored in a cylindrical space defined within an inner tubular mandrel concentric with the core and an outer tubular mandrel concentric with the core. The two mandrels are concentric with each other and spaced apart to form an annular circumferential opening through which the thin film sleeve is disposed and drawn.

  • Patent number: 4642081
Abstract: A flexible drive belt for coupling at least two pulleys such as those found on a motor vehicle engine. The belt is manually installable without adjusting the distance between the pulleys and is particularly useful for temporary or emergency installation in place of a broken drive belt. The belt includes first and second ends which are fastened together to form an endless drive belt. The first end of the belt is provided with a series of openings which accept a corresponding number of projections which extend perpendicular to an intermediate surface of the second belt end. Both the first and second belt ends are provided with intermediate surfaces such that when joined a smooth inner surface is formed. For a permanent installation, locking pins may be disposed within throughbores extending through the sides of the projections such that the projections are prevented from unmating with the openings of the first end.
