  • Patent number: 4877172
Abstract: Method and apparatus for dispensing of attachments comprising a pair of side members linked by a connector. A roll of fastener stock is fed to a reciprocatively driven slide head assembly at which the roll is advanced over an elastomeric feed belt to a pair of needles secured to a shuttle. Once inserted in the needles, an individual attachment is severed from the stock, and displaced over a preset distance by the shuttle into the path of a pair of ejector rods. The ejector rods force the side members of the attachment out of the needles for insertion in a fabric or other workpiece at the bottom of the head stroke. On return stroke of the head, the needles are withdrawn, ejector rods retreat, and the shuttle returns to its severing position in a manner to avoid mechanical interference. This design uses an electric motor driven fastener dispensing head, actuator slide and associated linkages for actuating the various mechanisms either on an on-demand or continuous basis.

  • Patent number: 4877091
Abstract: A downcrowdable telescopic augering apparatus and drilling rig is disclosed that has a low overhead requirement and yet can drill large diameter holes ot great depths. The invention is especially useful for drilling foundation holes. One embodiment of the invention can ready over walls and in-place equipment for drilling holes. One embodiment of the invention can drill holes at almost any angle desired into the earth. One embodiment can drill holes on steeply inclined terrains. Because of its low overhead requirement, the drilling rigs of this invention can be used inside existing building without damaging the ceilings or roofs to drill foundation holes for mounting new machinery. The downcrowd means of this invention does not substantially increase the height of the augering apparatus or drilling rig.

  • Patent number: 4877171
Abstract: The invention provides an indirect firing fastener driving apparatus with adjustable firing power, including within a barrel holder, a barrel, a piston mounted in frictional contact within the barrel, and a pawl for retaining the piston. A ring, held against rotation in the barrel holder, is screwed onto the barrel. The ring cooperates with a free projecting into the barrel so that relative threading of the ring relative the barrel moves, through means of contact of the stop with the pawl, the position of the piston within the barrel when the barrel is pulled forwardly.

  • Patent number: 4875528
Abstract: A pneumatic tool has a torque control actuator which shuts off the tool upon the attainment of a predetermined operating torque. A wrap spring clutch which has a torque capacity at the operating torque has an input shaft and an output shaft. A first axially engageable element rotates with the output shaft and a second element can be axially engaged to rotate with the first element. A cam socket rotates with the clutch input shaft and cams on a cam surface of the first element in response to relative angular movements between the clutch input and output shafts. The cam socket is biased so as to move the first and second elements out of engagement and a pressure operated air valve is provided which moves the cam socket against its bias to engage the first and second elements when the tool is operated. When the operating torque is reached, the cam socket cams off a ledge of the cam surface to allow the air valve to move to a closed position where the tool is shut off.

  • Patent number: 4871033
Abstract: In a motor-driven hand tool, such as a drill, an inert mass is rotatably supported in a housing and is connected to the housing by a spring encircling a driven shaft mounted in the housing. The driven shaft is arranged to rotate a drill bit secured to the shaft. If the driven shaft is prevented from rotating and the housing rotates relative to the shaft, the spring tightens about and grips the driven shaft exerting a braking torque on it. The braking torque reduces the reaction torque required of the tool operator and affords a more rapid release of an overload clutch acting on the driven shaft. The overload clutch is formed by a collar, a gear wheel, a cup spring, and an adjustable ring nut, all located on the driven shaft.

  • Patent number: 4867251
Abstract: An impact device having a housing with hollow cylindrical aperture therein. The cylindrical aperture has a rotatable member within. The rotatable member has axial multiple rods thereon. On each rod of the rotatable member there are captive annular masses with a central aperture larger than the diameter of the rod to permit radial movement of the masses with respect to the rod. The rotatable member is driven by a motor and in turn rotates the annular masses which strike impact tools also supported within the housing. The kinetic energy of the annular masses is thereby transmitted via the impact tools to the outside of the impact device.

  • Patent number: 4867249
Abstract: A tool attachment for a percussion drill power tool which expands and sets, essentially but not limited to, fastening anchors used in concrete and masonry. The tool's body is generally cylindrical and is mostly hollow to slip over a drill bit (38, 74) of the percussion drill, using a spring clip (24, 124) to keep it from falling off. The opposite end of the tool has either a coaxial concave recess (54, 154, 354, 454) to place onto an anchor (58) or a coaxial plunger (260) to slip into a mostly hollow anchor (258) that are placed into a drilled hole (64, 264). The anchor (58, 258) is then expanded and set into the concrete or masonry by the hammering action transmitted through the tool by the percussion drill.

  • Patent number: 4867364
Abstract: Bulk nails from a single outlet track of a vibrating feedbowl are selectively diverted into a plurality of nail tracks. During each nailing operation of a pallet-making machine, one nail from each track is picked from the track and delivered to a nail-driving chuck. • Patent number: 4863089
Abstract: Improvements in the guide body and nail feed mechanism of a nail driving tool, using wire collated nails, to eliminate the formation of loose pieces of collating wire and the trapping thereof under the heads of driven nails to form flags. The tool has a driver, a magazine containing a coil of nails joined together in spaced relationship by collating wires welded to each nail, a guide body providing a drive track for the driver and the nails, and a feed pawl which advances and retracts in guideways in the guide body and has fingers engaging nails of the coil to locate the forwardmost nail thereof in the drive track. As the forwardmost nail of the coil is driven into a workpiece the collating wires break near the forwardmost nail leaving forwardly extending wire segments on the next succeeding nail. The drive track is provided with windows positioned to receive the wire segments of the forwardmost nail and bend them upwardly along the nail shank as the nail is driven.

  • Patent number: 4863088
Abstract: A stapling instrument including two elongate structural members each comprising a handle part with a jaw part projecting from a first end. The structural members have pivot means at second ends of their handle parts adapted for free engagement and disengagement and relative pivotal movement of the structural members between open and closed positions. An elongate locking member is mounted one one of the structural members for pivotal movement to a locking position generally aligned with its handle part where the locking member can be releasably retained to forcefully move the structural members to their closed position so that high compressive forces can be applied to tissues between the jaw parts. Staples from a cartridge along one jaw part can then be driven through the tissue and closed against an anvil along the other jaw part.
