  • Patent number: 6721331
Abstract: A method and apparatus provide decentralized prioritized scheduling of wireless access in a carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) wireless local area network (LAN) is presented. Prior to and during data packet transmissions, a device station in the CSMA/CA wireless LAN continuously monitors transmission traffic in the bandwidth medium of the wireless LAN to determine whether the delay associated with pre-transmission of a data packet, due to the collision avoidance protocol in the CSMA/CA wireless LAN, exceeds the time frame in which the device station necessarily must transmit the data packet. If the delay is too great for the type of data packet to be transmitted, the device station decreases the possible range of the back-off duration of the collision avoidance protocol. Thus, the station device can increase its transmission priority by decreasing the randomly selected back-off duration range of values.

  • Patent number: 6671271
Abstract: A multiported integrated circuit performs pointer processing at the SONET STS and VT levels, and removes overhead information from a received electrical signal derived from an optical SONET signal. The integrated circuit operates to extract STM traffic and ATM traffic from the received SONET signal, in response to provisioning information received from a management and control unit. The extracted STM traffic is then combined with path switching information, and forwarded out a pair of interfaces, which enables path selection within an STM switch fabric within a local line unit and within a switch fabric on a partner line unit in an active/standby pair of line units. The path switching information is also output from the integrated circuit for transmission to a pair of ATM switch fabric units.

  • Patent number: 6671261
Abstract: An apparatus and method of establishing a communication connection is provided. A one-way delay is not approximated by an average of a two-way delay calculation. Instead, a first time difference is determined based on a round-trip delay of a transmission over a packetized network and a circuit-switched network. A second time difference is also determined based on a round-trip delay of a transmission over the circuit-switched network. Then a delay value is calculated based on the two time differences.

  • Patent number: 6621826
Abstract: A transmission control method is provided which can improve a decrease in throughput when collision occurs during the use of a collision-based access system. In response to forward link message DA11(I,0) from a radio base station 10, a terminal 11 transmits a packet signal D11(0) while a terminal 12 transmits a packet signal D12(0). When the packet signals collide head-on, the radio base station 10 does not receive them but transmits forward link message D12(I,0). When the terminals 11 and 12 receive the forward link message, they judge that the packet signals transmitted by themselves have collided head-on and then transfers to a back-off state in which random time transmission is sustained. When forward link message DA13(I,0) is received from the radio base station 10, the terminal 12 restored from the back-off state retransmits the packet signal D12(0). Meanwhile, the terminal 11 is changed to a back-off state when receiving forward link message DA15(P,11) from the radio base station 10.

  • Patent number: 6618353
Abstract: An asymmetrical network for coupling customer-premises Internet hosts such as personal computers to the Internet. The head end of a CATV system has a high-bandwidth connection to the Internet. The down link connecting the personal computers to the Internet is the cables provided by the CATV system; the up link is a telephone connection to the head end. A router is connected to the down link by means of an RF modem, to the up link by means of an analog modem, and to a LAN which is connected to the Pcs. The router routes IP packets for the hosts that are received on the CATV cable to the hosts via the LAN; it routes IP packets from the hosts that are destined for the Internet to the head end via the telephone line. The asymmetrical network conserves IP addresses and addresses on the CATV cable by dynamically allocating the IP addresses for an RF modem's hosts and an address on the CATV cable for the RF modem in response to a request made by the RF modem via the telephone line.

  • Patent number: 6594263
Abstract: When data cells are transmitted from a station and the cells belong to different logical connections, derived from various logical or physical sources, each source and thus connection may require a particular transmission rate, which is not to be exceeded. Then for each one of a number of successive time slots a queue is arranged, the first current queue being the one pointed to by a pointer. The time slot queues comprise in a consecutive order, identifiers of those connections for which a data cell is to be transmitted. The first position in such a queue indicates the connection, for which a data cell is to sent with the highest degree of priority. The following positions indicate connections which have lower degrees of priority in a decreasing order. The first data cell in the time slot queue (No. 1) as pointed to by the pointer is then transmitted from the station and a cell belonging to the same connection is added to that other queue (No.
