Patent number: 6430191Abstract: In a digital switch, incoming cells are placed into a queue in a cell memory. The switch maintains various cell queues, including VC queues that correspond to individual connections and QBin queues that correspond to various classes of service. Cells may arrive to a VC queue or a QBin queue but will depart from a QBin queue. Accordingly, cells may be moved from VC queues to QBin queues. Cells are serviced according to the use of QBin Groups. A QBin Group (QBG) includes a number of logical queues (QBins) of cells to be transported in the digital network. After a QBG is selected, one of its logical queues is selected for servicing. The QBG may be selected by examining all of the QBGs to find an eligible QBG which is most overdue for service. A QBin of the selected QBG may then be selected by examining each of the QBins comprising the selected QBG to find the most overdue for service. The QBGs may correspond to virtual interfaces.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1997Date of Patent: August 6, 2002Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: Daniel E. Patent number: 6377579Abstract: This invention describes a method for exchanging timing messages and data packets between switches of a network with a common time reference, and between end stations and switches of such a network, over an asynchronous sub-network. The method entails transmission of messages conveying the common time reference, and data packets that are sent responsive to the timing information and predetermined scheduled time intervals. The switches of the network maintain a common time reference, which is obtained either from an external source (such as GPS-Global Positioning System) or is generated and distributed internally. The time intervals are arranged in simple periodicity and complex periodicity (like seconds and minutes of a clock).Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 1998Date of Patent: April 23, 2002Assignee: Synchrodyne Networks, Inc.Inventor: Yoram Ofek

Patent number: 6341132Abstract: A telecommunication node for an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) telecommunication network performs Segmentation and Reassembly (SAR) of ATM cells. The SAR particularly provides Virtual Channel Identifier (VCI) and Virtual Path Identifier (VPI) translation and further provides a Direct Memory Access (DMA) for accessing an external storage. When the VCI and VPI identifiers are representative of an Error Code Correcting (ECC) procedure to be carried out in the local mode, the SAR circuit performs a first DMA access which is decoded by an address decoder. Conversely, when no ECC procedure is locally required, the SAR decodes the VCI and VPI and performs a second DMA access which is also decoded by the address decoder. The latter decoding is then used by a Reed-Solomon Coder and Decoder for possibly performing an error correcting procedure on the ATM message formed by the ATM cells being processed.Type: GrantFiled: February 4, 1998Date of Patent: January 22, 2002Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: Alain Benayoun, Jean-Francois Le Pennec, Patrick Michel, Gilles Toubol

Patent number: 6304549Abstract: This is a method for dynamic and distributed management of Virtual Path Connections (VPCs) in a hierarchical ATM network. VPC parameters, including VPC type (heterogeneous or homogeneous), source node characteristics, end-to-end VPC constraints (GoS and QoS), and the number of on-demand connections to be supported, are determined or specified. Network resources, such as bandwidth and buffer size availability, are also determined. The parameters and information relating to the network resources are sent to a connection server that computes an optimal physical route for the VPC, allocates resources along the computed route, and notifies switches along the route of the new allocation of resources. The switches then change their respective configurations to accommodate the new allocation.Type: GrantFiled: May 8, 1997Date of Patent: October 16, 2001Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Santhanam Srinivasan, Malathi Veeraraghavan

Patent number: 6275480Abstract: A satellite cellular communication system includes terrestrial user terminals and gateways, which are interconnected, at least in part, by communications over antenna spot beams produced by the satellite. Various control signals and information signals traverse the system. The processing is simplified at the terrestrial terminals by adding dummy bits to the call maintenance signals, and processing them to equal the frame size of the traffic signals, and by encoding the call maintenance signals using the same algorithm as that used to encode the traffic signals. The call traffic signals are separated from the call maintenance signals, after decoding the frames in a common manner, by (a) identifying as traffic signals those frames in which error detection and correction (EDAC) identifies no error, and in which the 27 bits added to the call maintenance signals do not match the added-bit pattern.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1997Date of Patent: August 14, 2001Assignee: Lockheed Martin Corp.Inventor: Nicholas Carl Schreier

Patent number: 6275484Abstract: An improved CDMA base station for insuring a constant supply of energy to each of a plurality of rake fingers, thus improving gain. One aspect of the base station includes a plurality of pairs of diversity antennas. The energy from the first antenna of each pair is subjected to a delay while the energy from the second antenna of each pair is not subjected to a delay. The added delay is greater than the chip time of the rake fingers. The signals from each pair of antennas is combined and converted to digital form. The energy from all the antennas is then routed to the rake fingers, with the energy from each antenna being routed to one of the rake fingers. The energy from the rake fingers is then combined into a single data stream. In an alternative approach, the base station includes a plurality of diversity antennas. The energy from each of the diversity antennas is subjected to a different amount of delay. The delay difference must again be greater than the chip time of the rake fingers.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 1997Date of Patent: August 14, 2001Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Michael A.
