  • Patent number: 5295803
Abstract: A device for controlling the thickness of a sheet in calendering includes a thickness measuring unit for measuring the thickness of the sheet immediately after it has been formed by a pair of calender rolls, and a roll adjusting unit for moving at least one of the pair of calender rolls toward and away from the other calender roll. The device further includes a detection unit for detecting change in distance between the axes of the pair of calender rolls, and a control device for comparing the measured thickness of the sheet with a target thickness to obtain a difference therebetween. The control device then calculates a gap adjusting value on the basis of the difference, and compares the change in distance between the axes of the rolls detected by the detection unit with the calculated gap adjusting value. When these values become equal, the control device stops the movement of the one calender roll to make the thickness of the sheet equal to the target thickness.

  • Patent number: 5296188
Abstract: The invention concerns a cooling plug for sizing the interior surface of thermoplastic extruded pipe. Vacuum and/or pneumatic pressure is applied at the surface of the plug. The pneumatic pressure may cause the inner wall to balloon outwardly to form bells within a mold or within an outer wall, to fit into corrugations of an outer corrugated tube, etc. The vacuum may be used to pull the inner wall back to the surface of the plug after application of pneumatic pressure.

  • Patent number: 5296179
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for monitoring injection pressure, using the relationship between positions of a screw (1), filling of resin in a cavity and injection pressure. Mold cavity data are stored, whereby a display screen (2) displays, based on said data, a configuration of the cavity and straight lines corresponding to cross sections along which the cavity is divided into a plurality of regions. Screw positions required to sequentially fill the divided regions of the cavity with the resin are obtained to be displayed on a coordinate axis representing a screw position in a pressure waveform graph (22). Then an operator changes the setting of molding conditions referring to the data on the display screen, and carries out the injection to obtain the pressure data corresponding to the screw position to be displayed on the pressure waveform graph (22).

  • Patent number: 5296173
Abstract: An improved tire section repair unit for the repair of a damaged section of a tire. The repair unit includes two curved side walls pivotally connected to the base of the unit. A locking arm is provided that securely encloses the entire system of curved walls, base and internal air bag and heat pad arrangement situated about the tire under repair. The pivotable side wall design permits the repair of tires of varying sizes. A locking arm arrangement permits the use of lightweight side walls to enclose the system. As a result, the repair unit of the present invention is more transportable and less cumbersome to use.

  • Patent number: 5292472
Abstract: Coextrusion apparatus for forming tubular elastomeric ply made up of first, second and third concentric streams of elastomeric material and a pair of coaxial helical patterns of individual reinforcing elements wound in opposite direction with respect to each other contained within the first and third streams of elastomeric material and separated by the second stream of elastomeric material. A pair of reinforcing element guides are rotatably mounted within the apparatus between stationary flow channels for the three streams of elastomeric material, and are rotated in opposite directions with respect to each other. The two helical patterns of reinforcing elements and three streams of elastomeric material merge together substantially simultaneously in concentric circles which lie in a plane generally perpendicular to a central axis of the coextrusion apparatus to form the tubular ply. A method for producing such a reinforced tubular elastomeric ply also is presented.

  • Patent number: 5290505
Abstract: A method is indicated of recycling plastic sheet material coated with adhesive and available in chopped form. The method provides for separating the plastic from the adhesive. In a first method step the chopped sheet material (4) is introduced into a solvent bath (1) where the chopped sheet material (4) is moved for a predetermined dispersing time under mechanical action. The mechanical action preferably is exercized by rolling or kneading. In a second method step, the adhesive dispersed in the solvent is separated from the chopped sheet material (4) by mechanical action of forces--preferably by introducing squeezing forces in a conveyor screw.

  • Patent number: 5290503
Abstract: After loading a green tire in a tire vulcanizing machine and before shaping, bead portions of the green tires are centered relative to bead rings of upper and lower metal molds and are sequentially inserted into the bead rings precisely in parallel thereto by the same extendable/retractable sectors and chucks which are movable vertically. An apparatus preferable for practicing the aforementioned method includes a plurality of such sectors for centering and holding a bead portion of the green tire, slide and linkage mechanisms for extending and retracting chucks to which the sectors are mounted, and a cylinder mechanism for vertically moving the chucks so as to insert the bead portion of the green tire centered and held by the sectors into a bead ring of a tire metal mold.

  • Patent number: 5290502
Abstract: A rigidized fiber filter element is produced from a precursor fiber web. The precursor fiber web contains heat-shrinkable fibers or binder fibers or both. The web is exposed to temperatures sufficiently elevated to cause shrinkage of the fibers or melting of the binder. After cooling the web, the filter elements produced are self-supporting, and may have densities up to 500 kg/m.sup.3 to improve filtration while retaining good functional characteristics for operating pressure drop and air permeability. Rigidized fiber filter elements can be constructed of one material, and thus may be suitable for recycling.

  • Patent number: 5288436
Abstract: A lenticule is bonded to the eye as part of its formation process by curing or final curing the lenticule on the eye. Such lenticules provide a smooth transition from the body of the lenticule to Bowman's layer on which the lenticule is disposed. The lenticule at the time its material or precursor is placed on the eye may vary from being essentially all viscous collagen which flows and must be molded to obtain a desired lenticule configuration to a substantially stable preform which holds its own shape. Such preformed lenticules may be formed using an appropriate mold and photopolymerization or other partial curing techniques to pre-cure the lenticule material to an appropriate stage for application to the eye.
