  • Patent number: 6536703
Abstract: A method and apparatus for winding strip material onto a drum is disclosed. Friction between the surface of the drum and the strip material wound there around, as well as friction between adjacent reels of strip material, may be selectively controlled by controlling the provision of a fluid bed between the strip material and the surface of the drum. Control over this friction allows the individual strips to slip to different degrees relative to the drum on which they are wound. The different amounts of slip permit the strips to be wound on the drum with uniform tension and at a uniform take up speed.

  • Patent number: 6536698
Abstract: A dual mode tape rule blade arrestor structure that provides for an effective increase in tape rule rewind buffering to prevent excessive blade retrieval speeds that generate high impact sheering forces. The arrestor button of the present invention is pressed upward to temporarily halt tape rule rewinding, but can at the same time also be pressed downward and locked into the full constraint position. As such, the improved structure of the invention herein enhances tape rule service life as well as operating safety.

  • Patent number: 6536704
Abstract: In the method for controlling the structure of a reel, a continuous paper web (W) is reeled around a reel spool (2) to form a reel (R), and one or more variables are measured from the web (W). When a particular, predetermined change occurs in the variable, the lateral oscillation of the web is changed, by means of which the web is guided to different locations in the reel (R) in the axial direction of the reel spool (2). The change can be implemented by starting the oscillation or by changing the oscillation in progress. The change can be implemented on the basis of the changes in the transverse profile of the web (W).

  • Patent number: 6520443
Abstract: A pretensioner 10 for a seat belt 12 employs a strap 30 fixed about a pulley 34 and also fixed at an opposite end 36 to a housing 18. Upon pretensioner activation, an actuator 20 is propelled across a rectangular passage 72 thereby impelling a portion 31 of the strap 30 extending across the passage 72. Torque created by the strap 30 about the pulley 34 effects slideable and rotary engagement of the geared pulley 34 with a geared hub 38. The geared hub 38 co-axially and rotatably communicates with a seat belt retractor spool 46 wherein a seat belt retractor spool shaft 40 axially extends through hub 38 and spool 46. Activation of the pretensioner 10 therefore results in ignition of a gas generant 22 that produces sufficient gas pressure to drive the actuator 20, thereby effecting rotary movement in the pulley 34, the hub 38, the shaft 40, and the spool 46. A seat belt 12 wound about the spool 46 is thereby pretensioned.

  • Patent number: 6513746
Abstract: A webbing take-up device which, when a webbing belt is pulled out, can reduce the rewind urging force applied to the vehicle occupant by the belt. The take-up device includes a spool 20 for winding a webbing belt, a take-up shaft that is connected to the spool, a shaft member connected to the take-up shaft via adapters 30, 44, a torsion coil spring 56 connected between a ratchet wheel 52 and adapter 44, another torsion coil spring 60 connected between the adapters 30, 44 and a spiral spring 48 connected to the shaft member. When the belt is pulled out and secured over an occupant, a plunger 70 engages ratchet wheel 52, and torsion coil spring 56 is wound tighter on the adapter 44. The resultant frictional force and urging force of the torsion coil spring 60 is greater than the urging force of the spiral spring 48. Thus, slack is present in the torsion coil spring 60, and the adapter 30 rotates relatively to the adapter 44.
