  • Patent number: 6502783
Abstract: A carrier tape recycling apparatus for receiving bare carrier tape from a manufacturing system and for winding the carrier tape onto a plurality of tape reels for reuse. The carrier tape recycling apparatus includes a reel drive mechanism configured to support and rotationally drive a plurality of tape reels such that bare carrier tape dispensed from the manufacturing system may be wound onto the tape reels. The reel drive mechanism provides a slip drive allowing each tape reel disposed in the recycling apparatus to rotate and receive carrier tape independent of other tape reels disposed in the recycling apparatus, so as to compensate for variation in the rate at which carrier tape is supplied to each tape reel disposed in the carrier tape recycling apparatus. The present invention also includes a method of using the recycling apparatus to recycle bare carrier tape dispensed from a manufacturing system.

  • Patent number: 6497379
Abstract: A seat belt retractor including an energy absorbing mechanism which can reliably satisfy a requirement to absorb the energy flexibly is provided. When a first pulley is rotated clockwise by an extraction of a webbing in an emergency, a wire, which is connected to the first pulley at one end, is pulled. Thus, a second pulley, to which the other end of the wire is connected, is rotated clockwise around a second rotational shaft. The second rotational shaft is disposed at a position away from the center of the second pulley. Thus, the rotational diameter gradually increases and a torque applied by the wire for rotating the second pulley is gradually reduced. Since the second rotational shaft is connected to a torsion bar, a load applied to the torsion bar is reduced after reaching a limit load.

  • Patent number: 6494399
Abstract: In the method for controlling reeling in a reel-up of a paper web, a paper web (W) is guided via a rotating reeling cylinder (1) around a reel spoil (2) into a reel (R) in such a way that the paper web (W) is passed onto the reel via a nip (N) between the reeling cylinder (1) and the reel (R). The paper web (W) running onto the reel is subjected to a load by means of actuators of the reel-up, which load affects the structure of the reel and is controlled by means of measured variables determined during the reeling process. A reel density is used as the measured variable, the reel density being determined during the reeling process continuously or at intervals, wherein it is possible to implement a closed control loop.

  • Patent number: 6494395
Abstract: A seat belt retractor is formed of a reel for winding a seat belt, and a spring member connected to the reel for providing a retracting force thereto. The retracting force is weak not to provide a feeling of oppression to a passenger when the passenger has fastened the seat belt. A motor is connected to the reel for driving the reel only in a direction of retracting the seat belt to generate a retracting force greater than that of the spring member. Thus, the seat belt retractor retracts the seat belt by sufficiently great retracting force, but does not provide a feeling of oppression to the person when properly fastened.

  • Patent number: 6494435
Abstract: In a load tie-down system that incorporates a wind-down winch for securing and tensioning a hold-down member, the improvement consists of incorporating a tensioning spring that maintains a resilient loading upon the drum of the winch, such that in the event of reduction in the tension of the hold-down member, the drum is driven in a winding-on sense, to maintain tension in the hold-down member. A releasable coupling between the spring and the winch drum enables independent operation of the winch and of the tensioning spring. One embodiment incorporates a spring mounted upon an extension of the winch drum, outside the frame. Helical springs are used. The spring torque is automatically connected to the winch drum, and is automatically disconnected when the spring is de-tensioned.

  • Patent number: 6481664
Abstract: An automatic tape crossover machine having two feeding mechanisms to supply running and new tapes, respectively. A powered cutter is provided through which the running tape is to pass and be cut in response to a cut signal, where the cutter is positioned downstream of the first tape feeding mechanism. The machine also includes a joining mechanism at which a portion of a new tape is to be joined to the running tape in response to a join signal. Control circuitry automatically determines whether a tape exhaustion condition has been reached and asserts the join and cut signals to join the running and new tapes and to cut the running tape, before the tape feeding mechanism is emptied of the running tape. The machine thus allows the automatic transition from the running tape to the new tape, i.e. without requiring the presence or manual assistance of a human operator when joining the two tapes.
