  • Patent number: 4156044
Abstract: A glass fiber is drawn through a rotating body of flowable coating material to apply the material thereon and then is further drawn through a throat section of an open ended cage formed by a plurality of wire strands forming a hyperboloid of rotation. As the glass fiber is drawn through the throat section the previously applied flowable material contacts the wire strands causing a vortex of material which centers the fiber in the throat and distributes the material uniformly and concentrically thereon.

  • Patent number: 4153007
Abstract: A layered wax taper candle having a centrally disposed wick in which the wax and the layers is disposed in a streaked wood-grain like arrangement. Apparatus for fabricating the taper candles includes a rotating table driven in a horizontal plane by a driving motor. Wick holders are disposed in spaced relation near the periphery of the table so that they are driven in a rotary path to pass through a pouring station also located at the periphery of the table. Pouring spouts are located at the pouring station for directing a stream of liquid wax to flow therefrom. The stream of liquid wax has opposing lateral flow direction components therein. A combination recovery sump and liquid wax storage container is located below the pouring point to retrieve liquid wax emitting therefrom. A submerged pump is in the container to urge the liquid wax from the container through a conduit to the spouts at the pouring station.

  • Patent number: 4149485
Abstract: Liquid is applied onto the circumference of a transfer roller by an applicator and thereby onto the circumference of an operating roller. The coefficients of friction in the apparatus are selected so that the transfer roller will be rotated by the operating roller to pick up liquid from the applicator when the thickness of the liquid on the transfer roller is below a selected value, and the transfer roller is prevented from rotating by the applicator when the thickness of the liquid slightly exceeds the selected value so that a uniform liquid film is applied onto the circumference of the operating roller.

  • Patent number: 4148274
Abstract: An apparatus for liquid development of latent images on sheets or webs comprises a plurality of applicator stations which sequentially deliver processing liquid to the latent image bearing surface of the sheets or webs. The latter are transported above the respective applicator stations with the concerning surface in downward direction. A controlling mechanism provides for the arrestment of the liquid supply before the trailing edge of the sheet or web has passed over the respective applicator station for the provision of not wetting the backside of the latter. The apparatus is extremely suited for developing latent electrostatic half-tone images on a high polymeric support.

  • Patent number: 4139662
Abstract: A sheet material to be saturated with a fast-reacting saturant, approximately one minute at room temperature, passes under a trough positioned across the travelling web and having a longitudinal slot through its bottom. A threaded rod having a diameter larger than the slot width is laid over the slot in the trough. The fast-reacting saturant is supplied to a traversing dispensing device located above the trough. This traversing device dispenses the saturant into the trough. The threaded rod co-acts with the slot in the bottom of the trough to meter the amount of fast-reacting saturant flowing through the trough and onto the sheet material moving under and contacting the bottom of the trough.

  • Patent number: 4138965
Abstract: Apparatus for delivering metered amounts of varnish to the surface of a metal can, or the like. Varnish is delivered to a metering roll having recesses in its surface and a doctor blade to scrape off excessage. The varnish in the recesses of the metering roll is delivered to a varnishing roll in continuously metered amounts, and it is delivered by the varnishing roll to the surface of a can, or the like. Remaining varnish is removed from the varnishing roll by a second doctor blade so that substantially no varnish is present on the varnishing roll at the points of delivery of metered varnish to such varnishing roll.

  • Patent number: 4137865
Abstract: Apparatus for molecular beam deposition sequentially on a plurality of substrates is described. The apparatus includes a growth chamber and an auxiliary (sample-exchange) chamber coupled by an air-lock. The substrates are carried by a rod which can be translated via a bellows mechanism between the two chambers. The auxiliary chamber includes a port which permits access to the samples so that the entire rod-bellows mechanism need not be removed in order to change samples. The auxiliary chamber also includes means for maintaining therein an inert atmosphere at a pressure in excess of atmospheric pressure especially when the port is open. The growth chamber includes a cylindrical LN.sub.2 shroud which has an aperture in its wall to admit molecular beams to only a heated (growth) substrate. The unheated (idle) substrates are thus shaded from the beams. In addition, the shroud surrounds both the growth substrate and idle substrates in the growth chamber.

  • Patent number: 4136636
Abstract: A solvent vapor collector is mounted on the upstream inlet end of an oven having a gas-circulating means and intended for curing a coating applied to a strip sheet metal at a coating station. The strip sheet metal may be hot and solvent vapors are evaporated at the coating station and from the strip as it passes from the coating station to the oven. Upper and lower plenums within a housing of the collector are supplied with oven gases or air from the gas-circulating means and such gases or air are discharged within the collector obliquely in a downstream direction against the strip passing through that collector to establish downstream gas flows along the top and under surfaces of the strip so as, in turn, to induct solvent vapors into the collector at the coating station.

  • Patent number: 4136635
Abstract: A chamber having an opening in its wall contains a roller. A portion of the surface of the roller is situated in the opening. A web is continuously moved past the chamber so as to cover the opening. A vacuum is created in the chamber. The external pressure forces the web into contact with the roller. A coating liquid is supplied into the chamber so as to wet the roller. The roller is rotated so that the coating liquid is transferred to the web.

  • Patent number: 4135475
Abstract: A pressure roller for applying pressure to a sheet-like material passing between the pressure roller and an application roller for applying a layer of liquid to the material, as in the development of diazotype copies, comprises a plurality of relatively short constituent rollers connected to one another by connecting means which permit radial displacement of the adjacent constituent rollers relative to each other and wherein each constituent roller is urged toward the application roller by at least one resilient spring-like element. The pressure roller thus enables contact between it and the application roller with an even pressure, without significant sagging along its length, while allowing uneven areas of the sheet-like material to pass therebetween without affecting the force exerted over the entire nip between the rollers. Improved development of diazotype copies can thus be obtained.

  • Patent number: 4135476
Abstract: A sealant applicator for applying a sealant to the countersink portion of a rivet bore in a workpiece includes an applicator head, a sealant supply, and a drive unit for moving the applicator head between the countersunk surface and the sealant supply. A sealant dauber is rotatably and adjustably mounted on the applicator head and is driven by a motor, also mounted on the head. A flexible applicator tip is fitted to one end of the dauber for receiving sealant from the sealant supply and applying it to the countersink surface. The sealant is supplied to the applicator tip from a reservior having an opening in which is located a sealant permeable member. Sealant is supplied to the reservoir from a sealant cartridge. A predetermined amount of sealant is passed through and is maintained above the permeable member before the applicator tip contacts the permeable member. When the applicator tip engages the permeable member a bead of sealant attaches to the tip.
