  • Patent number: 4685416
Abstract: Coating apparatus for coating a cable with bitumen which is self-contained except for apparatus for supplying a heated fluid to the coating apparatus. The coating apparatus includes a tank for receiving bitumen and has pipes therein to which heated fluid at a temperature sufficient to melt solid bitumen is supplied by external fluid heating apparatus and in which the heated fluid circulates. The cable passes through the apparatus in a trough to which liquid bitumen is supplied by a rotating cylinder partially immersed in the liquid bitumen and connected, for liquid bitumen delivery, to the trough by a pivotable chute. A tiltable cradle receives solid bitumen and dumps it into the tank where it is melted. A wiper in the form of a tensioned, elongate elastic body is wrapped by at least one turn around the cable where it leaves the coating apparatus and an elastic tab engages the cable adjacent the cable inlet to divert liquid bitumen which may flow toward the inlet.

  • Patent number: 4685417
Abstract: A glue applying device for a labeling machine equipped with a roller rotating about a vertical axis while a mass of glue is fed to one side. A glue scraper blade is mounted for swinging about a vertical axis into a position where the blade edge wipes off the mass of glue and leaves a film of glue on the roller. A lever extends radially from the blade axis. A micrometer adjustment screw is threaded through a pivoting arm for its tip to act on the lever. The screw has a turning knob in which a graduated thickness indicating dial is rotatable. A block is mounted to the arm and it has a bore through which the adjustment screw passes. There is an index mark on the block next to the dial. A compression spring in the bore holds the knob against self rotation. When the screw is turned to its limit against the lever, the dial is turned in the knob until the zero mark on the dial scale aligns with the index mark.

  • Patent number: 4683835
Abstract: A labeling device for bottles and the like features a rotor turning about a vertical axis and having a plurality of semi-circular glue pallets arranged in a circle on the rotor and oscillated through a limited angle as the rotor rotates. The pallets, after having contacted a glue coated roller, encounter the foremost label in a magazine and adhere to the label for moving the label to a transfer drum from which it is applied to the vessel in labeling position. The rotor is supported in a gear box and the glue roller is connected in a detachable manner at its end most remote from the gear box with a rigid arm having a stud shaft that engages the glue roller in a roller bearing. The arm is also provided with a stud shaft that makes a releasable connection with the rotor coincident with its axis to provide further support for the arm.

  • Patent number: 4679524
Abstract: An apparatus for coating a vertically travelling web comprises a vertical coating chamber defined by the web, a pair of side walls, a back wall spaced from the web, and a flexible blade applied against the web and forming a top closure of the coating chamber. There is a back-up member at the opposite side of the web forming a coating nip together with the flexible blade, through which nip the web passes. A slot at the bottom of the coating chamber forms a web entrance of the coating chamber. The width of the slot and the supply of coating substance to the coating chamber are so adapted to the speed of the web and to the viscosity of the coating substance, that only a small amount of coating substance flows downwardly through the slot during normal operation of the apparatus. The side walls of the coating chamber provide means for substantially closing the coating chamber.

  • Patent number: 4674435
Abstract: A device for applying a protective coating to the weld or solder seam of a can body has an application roller (2) serving to apply a coating material inside a region covering the seam at the inside (15) of the can body. The roller periphery has a cross-sectional profile (5) comprising at least one depression (10) in a middle region (9) of a middle portion (6) having a region width of less than 60% of the width of the middle portion (6). The profile (5) further comprises at least one salient point and/or at least two points of inflection in this middle region (9). The device renders it possible to achieve optimum layer thicknesses of the coating over the seam, which are neither too little for the stresses occurring during the long-term storage of corrosive liquids nor too great for the tearing strength stressing of the coating which occurs during the flanging over of the edges of the can body.

  • Patent number: 4674438
Abstract: A film coater apparatus applies an ultraviolet light curable coating to the opposite side of filmstrips in which the filmstrip is initially supported at one end on a plastic leader, includes a coater formed with complementary leader guiding passageways in the opposite side walls of the coater which guide the leader through the coater in non-contacting relation to the offset coater applicator rolls and to the smoother bars so that coating material is not built-up on the leader. The coater apparatus is self-threading and includes an inlet drive roll, an ultraviolet light curing chamber, and an outlet drive pinch roll assembly which serves to grip the leader and thereafter to grip and drive the filmstrips through the coater. The outlet pinch rolls provide a draw or tension to the film to assure the desired delivery of the filmstrips through the coater and in contacting relation to the coating and smoothing elements therein.

  • Patent number: 4671204
Abstract: Apparatus for thermal transfer with a semiconductor wafer in a vacuum processing chamber includes a platen with a surface for supporting the wafer, a clamping ring for clamping the wafer to the platen, and passages for supplying a low pressure gas into a thermal transfer region between the wafer and the platen surface. A low compliance seal surrounds the thermal transfer region and inhibits the gas from reaching the processing chamber without overstressing the wafer. The seal includes an elastomer ring having an elongated cross-section, and a sealing groove having a first groove portion for gripping one edge of the ring and a second groove portion which receives the other edge of the ring by bending deformation thereof when a wafer is clamped to the platen. In a preferred embodiment, the ring has a parallelogram-shaped cross-section and is oriented at an acute angle to the platen surface.

  • Patent number: 4665859
Abstract: A finger-type doctor blade holder has a plurality of pressure fingers spaced along the underside of a loading plate. A doctor blade is removably supported in recesses defined between the pressure fingers and the loading plate, and the pressure fingers are mounted for pivotal movement about an axis extending across the surface to be doctored. A flexible loading tube is located alongside the finger pivot axis in a tube tray, and a force transmitting member is interposed between the pressure fingers and the loading tube. The rigidity of the force transmitting member prevents upward bulging of the loading tube between the pressure fingers, and the surface of the loading tube is indented by either the force transmitting member or a separate member at the base of the tube tray. The indentation in the tube surface enables the tube to act as a rolling diaphragm when compensating for variations in the distance between the pressure fingers and the base of the tube tray.

  • Patent number: 4664058
Abstract: An apparatus for coating a plastics coated paperboard web with a sterilizing liquid such as hydrogen peroxide, the web adapted to be folded and cut to form aseptic packages for filling with foodstuffs such as fruit juices and milk. The apparatus includes a pair of rolls between which the web is moved and is coated. The lower (applicator) roll of the pair is provided with continuous helical grooves and is partially immersed in a bath of sterilizing liquid. The configuration of the grooved surface of the applicator roll has been found to be critical in meeting coating standards in the field of aseptic packaging. The grooves make a pitch angle of from 5.degree. to 12.degree. with the longitudinal axis of the applicator roll, with a preferred angle of 9.degree.. Either single grooves or crossed grooves may be used, with the land area of this roll being from 60 to 80%. The applicator roll is manufactured from stainless steel (#316).
