  • Patent number: 4583574
Abstract: Disclosed is a flaker for trunk and residual wood for the direct production of a mass of chips free of splinters and low in fines. Flaking takes place within a blade rotor equipped with a replaceable blade ring, which together with its housing may be moved back and forth in front of the outlet of a wood feed chute equipped with pressure elements. A compression chamber is located inside the blade ring, in which the wood to be cut intermittently abuts against a counter support. The compression chamber is equipped with additional pressure elements in order to hold the wood substantially still and without fluttering, until it is cut, without leaving a residue, even in the case of wood of large cutting width. The additional pressure elements act transversely to the counter support. A stationary, slightly raised entrance barrier is arranged directly in front of the compression chamber.

  • Patent number: 4583391
Abstract: A simple, rugged, and conveniently front-adjustable gage stop having a gage finger capable of presenting a gage face in any of several angular orientations is disclosed. The gage stop comprises a gage finger adjustably and rotatably connected to a finger support which is in turn pivotally connected to a mounting member. In operation, a workpiece is butted against the gage face with the gage stop resting in a horizontal orientation, and some operation is performed on the workpiece. If this operation results in an upward force being applied to the gage stop, the stop swings upward in response, to a limiting position in which the center of gravity of the finger support/gage finger combination is forward of the pivot axis, and then returns by gravity to a horizontal position.

  • Patent number: 4574854
Abstract: A bundle limbing device, primarily for mobile use, is divided into two mirror-symmetrical halves, each with one front and one rear swinging arm (4a,4b) at their lower parts mounted on a low level of a forwarder and interconnected by means of longitudinal bars (14a,14b). At the ends of the swinging arms of each device half, front and rear bearing beams (6a,6b) are rigidly secured, which serve as bearings for a series of parallel limbing rolls (8). Support shoulders (13a,13b) at the top of the swinging arms form side supports for a bundle of trunk portions (12) which are deposited on the bed formed as the two device halves are brought together, when the opposite bearing beams (6a,6b) on the associated swinging arms meet and form an obtuse angle. Each limbing roll consists of a center tube (9) which supports a series of circular annular flanges (10) with alternating inclination to the tube shaft defining an elliptic rotational surface.

  • Patent number: 4573507
Abstract: Device for splitting and cutting firewood, having a clamping device (3) adapted to be secured to an abutment plate (2) which is displaceable by hydraulic force. A log can be inserted through the clamping device between a guide plate (6) and two angled knives (5), and by activating a hydraulic cylinder (8) it will be forced between the two knives in the clamping device and a fixed vertical knife (1). A horizontal knife (4) may be arranged on the side of the vertical knife such that splitting and cutting are achieved simultaneously. The clamping device (3) is easily removed to use the device only as a splitter whereby the firewood is forced between the abutment plate (2) and the fixed knife (1), whereas the horizontal knives (4) simultaneously split more of the firewood.

  • Patent number: 4573956
Abstract: A slitter mechanism for use in a double fold bottomer apparatus employed in making bags from starting flush cut tubes is described which gives precise, high speed side marginal tube slitting in order to permit subsequent downstream gluing and folding operations. In preferred forms, the slitter mechanism includes a bag-end separating assembly having a vacuum manifold and a cooperating adjacent deflector bar serving to separate end portions of the sidewalls of a moving tube. A sequentially rotatable blade is also provided which first enters the open end of the moving tube between separated wall portions, overtakes and slits the leading side margin of the tube, and then stops with a trailing slitting edge situated within the tube open end; subsequent bag movement causes the trailing tube side margin to engage and be slit by the stationary blade edge.

  • Patent number: 4572257
Abstract: A hand-operated precision profiling tool for use in fabricating double-reed mouthpieces for double-reed musical instruments employs a reed support that is rotatably mounted on a base adjacent a manually-operated cutting assembly. The reed support holds a section of reed stock and a profiling template in fixed alignment for rotation about a common axis. The cutting assembly, comprising a blade and a stylus on a movable carriage, shaves a selected portion of the reed stock with strokes of the carriage parallel to the common axis, the stylus tracing the contour of the template as the blade shaves the reed stock accordingly. A handwheel enables hand rotation of the reed support within predetermined limits to select the portion shaved, and the reed support may include separate oboe and english horn nests on opposite sides to enable use for either size reed.

  • Patent number: 4571977
Abstract: A forging method for producing a flanged shaft such as, for example, a crankshaft, provided at its intermediate portion with a flange with the flanged shaft being formed from a blank having a diameter which is smaller than the diameter of the shaft end portions but large enough to prevent buckling of the blank when the latter is compressed in the axial direction. The blank is placed within a closed die apparatus and is axially compressed by a punch so that it is possible to produce the flanged shaft at a high dimensional precision and at a high yield, while reducing the time and labor for finishing work conducted after the forging, without requiring any large-size press.

  • Patent number: 4570687
Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing lumber products which are machined on all sides. With this method, the curved trunk which is to be machined, and which increases approximately conically in thickness toward one of its ends, is first, prior to flattening its longitudinal sides and cutting off boards, aligned relative to a processing line of sawmill equipment in such a way that its longitudinal central plane, which is disposed in the direction of curvature of the trunk, extends approximately parallel to the machining surfaces of side cutting devices which flatten the longitudinal sides of the trunk. After that, a portion of the large trunk end which projects beyond an alignment plane is flattened. This flattening is effected in a plane which is tangential to the two trunk ends on a convexly curved surface portion thereof.

  • Patent number: 4570695
Abstract: This invention provides a method for manufacturing a burr-free thin metal band by jetting molten magnetic metal from a nozzle onto a rotating cooling roll or a running cooling belt to permit it to be solidified. During the manufacture of such burr-free metal band, the width of a metal band to be obtained is also varied by swinging the nozzle within a predetermined angle range with respect to the direction of the width of the rotating cooling roll or the running cooling belt, or by varying the nozzle's opening length with respect to the direction of the width of the cooling roll or the cooling belt. According to this method it is possible to obtain a thin metal band having a central section with a uniform width, and first and second sections having a gradually narrowing width.
