Patent number: 4531392Abstract: A method of controlling a rolling mill at high exit strip speed in which eccentricity of one or more of the roll assemblies causes undesired variations in the gauge of material exiting the mill. The method includes storing a model of the response of the load cells that measure the force at which the rolls of the mill engage the material in the mill, and a model of the response of actuator mechanisms of the mill that provide the force. In addition, the frequency of any eccentricity of one or more of the rolls during rotation. This frequency and the stored models are utilized to provide an estimate of possible phase errors caused by the lag in the response of the load cells in measuring the occurrence of cyclic changes in force due to eccentricity of the rolls and by the lag in the response of the actuator mechanism in moving to a particular position upon command from a controller.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 1984Date of Patent: July 30, 1985Assignee: Aluminum Company of AmericaInventor: Mark E. Patent number: 4531930Abstract: In wound, preferably cylindrical paper containers, reinforcing rings of a synthetic plastic material are applied to the upper and possibly to the lower cut edges and joined by welding with the jacket. In order to insure that the core of the ring remains cold during welding and only the surface becomes liquid, thin-walled projections are provided in locations of the ring where welding is desired and are rendered flowable immediately prior to the placing of the ring on the jacket. Thus, the ring retains its structural integrity while being rendered weldable.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 1983Date of Patent: July 30, 1985Assignee: Michael Horauf Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co. Patent number: 4530227Abstract: In a hydrostatic support member a piston which is axially movable in a pressurized fluid medium-supplied cylinder carries at the end thereof which is remote from the cylinder at least two bearing shoes which are axially movable independently of each other and which can be inclined relative to each other. There is achieved an automatic adaptation of the bearing or running surface of the support member to a counter surface changing in distance, shape and curvature even throughout a wide tolerance range. Such a support member is particularly suited for supporting the working rolls in a rolling mill, the diameter of which decreases during the operating or service life thereof, or for the support of back-up or supporting rolls backing-up the working rolls.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 1983Date of Patent: July 23, 1985Assignee: Sulzer-Escher Wyss LimitedInventors: Beat Schlatter, Eugen Schnyder

Patent number: 4530694Abstract: To re-orient the position of a sheet, or package of sheets (3), for example after having been folded in a folding former, cut, and transversely folded in a folding knife cylinder, a pair of vertically aligned dish-like plates, or disks (4,5) are moved in an endless transport path. The plurality of such pairs of plates or disks may be provided, each pair being moved in a path by a gear belt (16, 29) driven by a gear or sprocket wheel (20, 30). The plates or disks receive a sheet, or package of sheets (3) therebetween, then are moved towards each other to clamp the sheet therebetween, for example under cam control (25) and a spring (24), and, when the sheets are clamped, additional rotation is supplied to one (4) of the plates or disks, the other (5) being freely rotatable, for example by a stepping motor (37) coupled thereto via a gear transmission and a bushing or sleeve concentric with the shaft driving the sprocket wheel.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 1983Date of Patent: July 23, 1985Assignee: M.A.N.-Roland Druckmaschinen AktiengesellschaftInventors: Ingo Kobler, Godber Petersen

Patent number: 4520614Abstract: Relatively tall stacks of paper sheets are introduced into successive cartons from above while the cartons are confined in the chamber of a receptacle whose side walls prevent excessive outward bulging of the adjacent side walls of the carton when a stack descends toward the carton in a vertical duct whose cross-sectional area is just sufficient to allow the stacks to descend. Each descending stack pushes a column of air into the carton wherein the air is compressed and urges the side walls of the carton against the respective side walls of the receptacle. The upper end of the duct receives stacks from an upright container having a bottom wall which is movable between open and closed positions. A side wall of the receptacle is detachable or otherwise movable to an open position so as to allow for insertion of empty cartons into or for removal of filled cartons from the chamber.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 1983Date of Patent: June 4, 1985Inventors: Kurt Aykut, deceased, by Eva-Marie Aykut, executor, Wolfram Wolf
