Patent number: 9826461Abstract: Techniques are disclosed relating to determining whether to bar a public land mobile network (PLMN). In some embodiments, a mobile device is configured to increment a count of failed requests to a PLMN for requests that are explicitly rejected by a base station and not for other requests. In some embodiments, the mobile device is configured to bar the PLMN in response to the count reaching a threshold value. In some embodiments, for requests that fail without explicit rejection, the mobile device is configured to wait a predetermined time interval before transmitting another request to the base station. The time interval may be telescoped for subsequent requests that fail without a rejection. In various embodiments, the disclosed techniques may reduce power consumption while avoiding premature PLMN barring.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 2016Date of Patent: November 21, 2017Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Samy Khay-Ibbat, Tarik Tabet

Patent number: 9819374Abstract: Systems and methods for providing additional control over user equipment (UE) using standardized features of a subscriber identity module (SIM) is provided. The UE can impose SIMLocking criteria based on subscriber related attributes (such as rate plan, prepay, postpay, etc.). The SIM module can comprise multiple unique entries and one value for each entry. One or more entries on the SIM can be subdivided to provide additional values with each value made up of a subset of bits from a particular entry. Thus, a single entry can provide a plurality of values to make up a SIM configuration. The SIM configuration can be compared to a UE SIMLock configuration with the same, or similar, entries to determine if the SIM is compatible for use with the UE. The SIM configuration can be updated dynamically to reflect changes in the account associated with the UE or the SIM.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 2016Date of Patent: November 14, 2017Assignee: T-Mobile USA, Inc.Inventor: Amela Kovacevic

Patent number: 9813873Abstract: A mobile device tracking prevention method and system includes monitoring a mobile device for movement, determining whether an operating state of a wireless module of the mobile device should be adjusted when movement of the mobile device is detected, and controlling the operating state of the wireless module based on the determination. One or more of the actual geographic location of the mobile device, network IDs broadcasted by nearby network access points, and signal strengths of the access points as detected by the mobile device can be monitored to detect movement of the mobile device. Changes to any of these may be indicative of movement of the mobile device, which may serve as the basis for enabling or disabling the wireless module to prevent tracking of the mobile device without sacrificing user productivity.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 2014Date of Patent: November 7, 2017Assignee: Avast Software B.V.Inventors: Yuval Ben-Itzhak, Shaul Levi, Pavel Mironchyk

Patent number: 9794770Abstract: Techniques for use by a mobile device configured to operate in a wireless network for the communication of data messages with a server are described. When the mobile device does not have an open session with the server, the mobile device receives from a service node via the wireless network a message which informs the mobile device that a data message has arrived at the server and needs to be retrieved. The message includes an identifier which identifies the data message at the server. In response to opening an application at the mobile device, the mobile device communicates directly with the server via the wireless network for retrieving the data message. This involves commencing an open session with the server, sending to the server a command for retrieving the data message, and receiving from the server the data message in response to sending the command. The mobile device may use the identifier for retrieving the data message from the server.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 2016Date of Patent: October 17, 2017Assignee: BlackBerry LimitedInventors: David Clark, Allan David Lewis, Barry Gilhuly, David Bajar, Nataliya Martsyna, Robbie John Maurice

Patent number: 9763083Abstract: A method and apparatus for managing mobility of a terminal by a first base station in a communication system. The first base station assigns a first address to the terminal located in a cell managed by the first base station and establishes a session to an external server that communicates with the terminal using the first address. If the terminal moves to a cell managed by a second base station different from the first base station, the first base station determines whether information about a second address assigned to the terminal by the second base station is received within a predetermined time. Upon receiving the information about the second address within the predetermined time, the first base station transmits data received from the external server to the terminal through the second base station using the information about the second address.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2013Date of Patent: September 12, 2017Assignee: SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO., LTD.Inventors: Ki-Suk Kweon, Jung-Shin Park, Yeong-Moon Son, Antony Franklin

Patent number: 9717065Abstract: In some implementations, wireless transceivers (“nodes”) can be located throughout a building. In some implementations, an originating mobile device can request the current location of a target mobile device. In some implementation, if a direct connection cannot be established between the originating mobile device and the target mobile device, the originating mobile device can send the location request to one or more nodes in the building. The nodes can relay the location request to the target mobile device. The target mobile device can determine the target mobile device's current location and send the current location of the target mobile device back to the originating mobile device through the nodes.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2013Date of Patent: July 25, 2017Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Devrim Varoglu, Michael U.
