Patent number: 6109596Abstract: A load lifting device of the hoist type, comprises a flat strip 5 arranged to form two hoist runs on opposite sides of a connection member 6 for a load. The two runs of the strip 5 are simultaneously wound up on, or unrolled from, a single reel. A spacing roller 20 forms in the strip 5 a substantially horizontal upper run. This improves the stability of the load by spacing apart the upright runs 21, 22 of the hoist.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 1999Date of Patent: August 29, 2000Assignee: Ste d'Innovations Techniques (S.I.T.)Inventor: Andre Garnier

Patent number: 6109555Abstract: A fishing reel having a brake mechanism including a brake drum provided on a spool receiving a fishing line thereon. A line tension sensor for determining the tension of the fishing line is operatively connected to the brake mechanism which includes at least one brake for engaging the brake drum connected with the spool. Under the control of the line tension sensor the brake mechanism is engaged with the brake drum for pre-braking by friction the rotating spool at initial slack in the fishing line. The brake mechanism is engaged with the brake drum for abruptly stopping by wedging the spool at slack beyond the initial slack. Under the control of the line tension sensor, the brake mechanism frictionally engages the brake drum for pre-braking the rotating spool when slack is initially sensed in the fishing line. When slack beyond that initially sensed occurs, at least one brake of the brake mechanism is wedged against the brake drum for abruptly stopping the spool.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1998Date of Patent: August 29, 2000Assignee: Berkley, Inc.Inventors: Jan Axel Svenson, Ernst Robert Gosta Axelsson, Roger William Ylikangas

Patent number: 6105891Abstract: A handle assembly for a fishing reel includes a crank arm and a handle grip. The handle grip includes a linking member and a knob member having a smooth outer surface. The knob member defines first, second and third axes that are mutually perpendicular and meet at a point of intersection, and has a cross section in each plane perpendicular to the second axis that is bounded by at least a portion of a curve selected from the group consisting of a conic section and an oval. The portions define at least a portion of the smooth outer surface of the knob member. The cross sections decrease in area outward from the point of intersection along the second axis in either direction. The inventive handle assembly substantially conforms to the shape of a human palm, and enables a user to rapidly wind the knob member over an extended period of time without causing the user's hand to tire easily.Type: GrantFiled: December 2, 1998Date of Patent: August 22, 2000Assignee: Shimano, Inc.Inventors: Takeshi Ikuta, Jun Sato

Patent number: 6098908Abstract: A fishing reel is constructed with a drag mechanism disposed between a first end of a spool shaft and a spool limiting relative rotation between the spool and the spool shaft. A rotor disposed around the spool is rotated in response to rotation of a handle on the housing for reeling in a fishing line. The handle is connected to a face gear disposed within the housing. A pinion gear contacts the face gear transmitting torque there from to a rotor shaft and then to the rotor. A sub-drag mechanism is mounted within a housing proximate a second end of the spool shaft which selectively limits relative rotation between the spool shaft and the housing. A sub-drag mechanism actuation mechanism is disposed on the same side of the face gear as the pinion gear for locking and unlocking the spool shaft against rotation within the housing, thus enabling and dis-enabling the sub-drag mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 1999Date of Patent: August 8, 2000Assignee: Shimano Singapore PTE. Patent number: 6073903Abstract: The disclosure relates to a vertically operating linear actuator for a multi-stage extendible column for carrying a cinematograph or TV camera. A load representing the weight imposed by the multi-stage column with its camera is indicated at (10), a vertically extending gas strut at (11) and a base (12). A piston rod (15) of the strut carries a rotatable disc mounted on a pivot pin eccentrically to its geometric center to provide a varying radius of rotation between the offset center and disc periphery (21). A tether (22) extends over the disc and is secured at one end to an anchorage (23) on the base and the other end supports the load (10).
