  • Patent number: 6977602
Abstract: Wide band CMOS digital to analog converters (DACs), including converters with selectable impulse response, using multiple DAC cores. The DAC cores operate on the same data at the DAC clock rate, but staggered in phase. Switches are used to switch the later part of the output time of each DAC core to the DAC output, otherwise to a dummy load. Thus each DAC conversion is comprised of a later part of each DAC core conversion, at least the first part of each DAC core conversion being ignored to allow each DAC core to settle before utilizing its output. Since the same switches and switching sequence is used on each DAC data conversion, the effects of switch imbalances are negated. Various embodiments are disclosed, including manipulation of the input to one of the DAC cores to selectively provide an NRZ, RZ and an RF response.

  • Patent number: 6978139
Abstract: When performing a soft-handoff, a communication system determines whether to engage in an analysis of a reverse link associated with a base station under consideration to be added to an active set of a mobile station (MS). Upon determining not to analyze the reverse link, the communication system adds the base station to the active set without evaluating the associated reverse link. Upon determining to engage in a reverse link analysis, the communication system evaluates the reverse link in order to assure that a communication link is not terminated, or dropped, as part of the soft-handoff until such time as the communication system may confirm that an acceptable quality reverse link is being added. The communication system then determines whether to add the base station to the active set based upon the evaluation.

  • Patent number: 6973320
Abstract: Timing Advance information is obtained from base stations (103–105), and is utilized by a remote unit (113) to approximate the Time of Arrival (TOA) of the signals from each base station. The remote unit (113) accesses a single base station to determine its timing advance. In order to increase accuracy, the remote unit (113) then repeats the process, but during the next iteration, the transmission timing is advanced or delayed by a fraction of a bit (e.g. ¼ bit). The base station responds with a new timing advance value. This process is repeated until it is determined how many fractions of bit increments the remote unit (113) is away from a known timing advance boundary of the base station. Once known, this information is utilized to determine the location of the remote unit (113).

  • Patent number: 6967611
Abstract: An algorithmic or cyclic data converter uses an RSD stage having a switched capacitor network for efficiently scaling at least one externally supplied reference voltage. A reference voltage is scaled by using capacitor ratios that also function to provide an output voltage used as a residue output of the RSD A/D converter. The residue is used to generate a bit value corresponding to the magnitude of the residue. Two RSD stages cycle back and forth generating a logic value each half clock cycle until the desired bit resolution is achieved. In one form, the RSD stage scales the externally supplied reference voltage only by factors of less than one. In another form, the RSD stage scales the reference voltage by any scaling factor. A reference voltage scaling circuit separate from the RSD stage is avoided.

  • Patent number: 6961544
Abstract: The invention relates to an integrated structure of a radio-frequency front end of a communications apparatus. The antenna of the communications apparatus is constructed on a printed circuit board. To this antenna board (310), on its ground plane side, a second circuit board (321) is attached by means of a rigid protective frame (410), which second circuit board includes the other parts of the radio-frequency front end. Between the parts impedance levels are used that are appropriate from the electrical operation perspective. All said parts together form an integrated component (400) to be located inside the housing of the communications apparatus. The advantage of the invention is that it requires a smaller number of components needed for matching between the RF parts, and makes possible a greater sensitivity of the receiver as well as a better transmitter efficiency than prior art structures.

  • Patent number: 6956433
Abstract: A polynomial predistorter and predistorting method for predistorting a complex modulated baseband signal are provided. In the polynomial predistorter, a first complex multiplier generates first complex predistortion gains, using a current input signal and complex polynomial coefficients modeled on the inverse non-linear distortion characteristic of the power amplifier, and multiplies them by I and Q signal components of the current input signal, respectively. At least one second complex multiplier generates second complex predistortion gains using the complex polynomial coefficients and previous predistorted signals and multiplies them by I and Q signal components of the previous predistorted signals, respectively. A summer sums the outputs of the first and second complex multipliers and outputs the sum as a predistorted signal to the power amplifier.

  • Patent number: 6956510
Abstract: Methods, software, circuits, architectures, and systems for encoding, decoding and error checking/correcting information, particularly pulse amplitude modulated information. The present invention enjoys particular advantage when used to encode x-unit sequence values of N-ary information into y-unit sequence values of M-ary information and to decode y-unit sequence values of M-ary information into x-unit sequence values of N-ary information, where Nx<My (and particularly where Nx<My, but Nx>My?M). The present invention advantageously provides a straight-forward mechanism for coding information that enables one to take advantage of coding overhead (e.g., unused states in the encoded, transmitted sequence) to accomplish other coding objectives, such as conforming to coding constraints, reducing transmission errors (or increasing the likelihood of successfully correcting such errors), dc balancing the coded information, and under certain conditions, even reducing power consumption.
