  • Patent number: 4101140
Abstract: A composite seal for use between a movable element and a static element in a fluid pressure system where pressures vary on opposite sides of the seal. The seal comprises a fluoronated hydrocarbon sealing ring with a finely grooved sealing surface and an elastomer loading ring. The loading ring is a static seal and normally imposes radial force on the dynamic sealing ring and under increased fluid pressure deforms the peripheral grooves, forcing entrained fluid from them. The sealing ring has recovery characteristics which tend to restore the deformed grooves without readmitting fluid into the grooves, establishing a pressure differential which adheres the sealing ring to the surface to be sealed.

  • Patent number: 4083568
Abstract: An injection mold cavity is sealed at the mold parting line using a highly exact, narrow annular gap or clearance which restricts flash through of the molten plastic. The seal is designed for molds having a rotatable pin and comprises a fixed seating ring which seats with the mold cavity element, and a journable seal ring having a precisely machined seal face which is narrowly spaced from the lip of the mold cavity and defines the gap dimension with the assistance of the seating ring. The rings float at a unit against a resilient component which controls the seating pressure of the assembly independently of the clamping force of the mold. The foregoing components are unitized within a clamp ring under a preload compressive force with the critical gap dimension precisely built into the unit.

  • Patent number: 4077634
Abstract: A seal arrangement is provided having a pair of elastomeric seal rings with a seal band adjacent the innermost diameter of the rings. The seal rings are retained by means of a pair of elastomeric torics, one of which is relatively immovable and the other of which is relatively movable. The movable toric is positioned between supporting structure incorporating ramps of low angle, which improves the pressure, velocity relationships of the seal and permits operation at higher speeds. Retention of the other toric stabilizes the seal and prevents cocking or tilting of the rings so as to maintain the sealing plane perpendicular to the rotational axis. An arrangement is thus provided wherein the seals are of nearly equal surface area which produces pressure balanced seals and a more constant, level force along the axis.
