  • Patent number: 4050702
Abstract: A packing ring for use between two surfaces to be sealed relative to each other is comprised of two ring components each of which is constituted by an assembly of ring segments which are provided with a projection at one end which engages a complementarily configured recess located at one end of an adjacent ring segment thereby providing a circumferentially extending interlocking of all segments of each ring. The ring segments of one ring are circumferentially staggered relative to the segments of the other ring by half a segment pitch, and each ring segment is provided with one or more recesses such that the respective recesses in the segments of the two rings are aligned in face-to-face relation so as to form a circumferential array of slots for receiving pressure springs.

  • Patent number: 4049022
Abstract: A pipe of concrete, cement mortar or other cementitious material is formed by an integrally cast cementitious mass which is reinforced with a glass fibre strand or roving forming a substantially helical winding extending around the pipe and incorporated in the cement matrix of the cementitious mass. Preferably there are two windings, one incorporated in the outer periphery of the mass and the other incorporated in the inner periphery of the mass. The pipe is preferably made by a centrifugal casting operation in which a centrifugal casting mould is rotated and the glass fibre strand or roving is fed from a feeding device within the mould and is caused to adhere to the internal peripheral face of the mould and then the feeding device is moved axially along the mould as the mould rotates so that the winding is formed from the roving around the internal peripheral face of the mould.

  • Patent number: 4049281
Abstract: A unitized dual lip seal for providing a seal between a housing and a shaft extending through a bore in the housing, including (1) a wear sleeve connected to the housing and having an inwardly extending radial flange, and (2) an elastomeric member mounted on the shaft with a main sealing lip riding on the inner wall of the wear sleeve on one side of the radial flange and an auxiliary lip on the other side of the radial flange and riding on the outside face of the radial flange. The umbrella-like auxiliary lip prevents formation of a pocket of contaminant and also encourages water drainage to wash sludge away from the auxiliary lip.

  • Patent number: 4045037
Abstract: A packing member, in either strip or annular form, the member comprising two lip sections adjoined to form a broad planar head surface. Each of the lip sections has a base with an outer lateral surface, and a groove extends along the entire length, or circumference, of the packing member between the bases. At least one of the lip sections includes a laterally outwardly depending sealing projection having a generally laterally outwardly facing side surface and a lower surface. In a relaxed state, the lower surface is disposed generally at an angle to the outer lateral surface of the respective base so as to be non-downwardly inclined from the outer lateral surface. The sealing projection is of such volume and cross-sectional configuration that, upon application of a generally laterally inward force to the side surface, the sealing projection is deformed to form a cavity adjacent its lower surface.

  • Patent number: 4043564
Abstract: A Pitman shaft boot seal designed for a static sealing application with one sealing surface compressed against the Pitman arm and the other sealing surface compressed against the steering gear housing. The sealing surfaces are held in place by a compression spring located inside the boot seal. The cylindrical portion of the boot seal is formed with a plurality of identical, equally spaced-apart, parallel, hollow ribs parallel to the axis of the Pitman shaft and extending around the entire circumference of the seal. The ribs allow the boot seal to twist as the Pitman arm moves arcuately, without breaking the static seal at the sealing surfaces.

  • Patent number: 4040607
Abstract: This invention relates to multi-shaft screw extruders in which the screw shafts are arranged to intermesh in pairs and rotate pairwise in the same sense, each shaft of a pair having at least one double threaded or triple threaded pressure build-up section corresponding to that of the other shaft. This invention also relates to a method of using such an extruder to build up pressure within a material with a minimum pressure build-up section and a minimum power input. The extruder and its method of operation are characterized by the fact that at least a portion of the pressure build-up section satisfies ##EQU1## WHEREIN T IS THE SCREW PITCH, D IS THE INTERNAL DIAMETER OF THE HOUSING, Q IS THE VOLUMETRIC THROUGHPUT OF MATERIAL OF A SCREW PAIR AND N IS THE SPEED OF ROTATION OF THE SCREW SHAFTS AND: ##EQU2## WHEREIN IN TRIPLE THREAD PRESSURE BUILD-UP SECTIONS A = 0.1082;a = 15.316;b = 69.111;Andc = 261.85And in double thread pressure build-up sectionsA = 0.206;a = 8.8212;b = 18.414;Andc = 31.668.

  • Patent number: 4039197
Abstract: A sealing ring is disclosed for sealing a pin which is displaceable chiefly along its axis through a passage in a housing wall into a chamber. A sealing ring housing is inserted into an annular groove in the housing wall. The sealing ring housing encompasses a ring made of wear-resistance material seated on the pin with a small radial clearance and having a large radial clearance in the sealing ring housing. A slide ring is seated on the pin without clearance with a large radial clearance in the sealing ring housing. The invention provides a sealing ring which permits easy axial and radial movement of the pin and prevents the ingress of dirt and humidity into the interior of the housing from the outside through the pin passage.

  • Patent number: 4033153
Abstract: Apparatus for producing pattern on advancing strips such as strips of textile and similar materials in which a roller rotates in a trough picking up a liquid such as a dye used for producing the pattern and carrying the liquid to a scraper blade slanted toward the strip of material with the scraper blade scraping off the liquid adhering to the roller which is then permitted to run down onto a strip moving therebelow. In accordance with the present invention, a plurality of movable channels are provided at the bottom end of the scraper plate, the channels being movable between one position in which the liquid is permitted to flow onto the moving strip and another position in which the liquid is directed to a catch pan from which it can be returned to the trough with means provided to oscillate the channels so as to produce a desired pattern on the strip.

  • Patent number: 4023476
Abstract: In the dough proofing machine described a housing contains a conveyor extending in a tortuous path from one end to the other, a heater and steam injector positioned in the center of the housing. Transversely extending vertically disposed plenum walls are located on either side of the heater and extend all the way to the side walls of the apparatus. A blower is associated with the heater to direct the air flow downwardly into a distribution plenum located below the heater and openings are provided in the front and rear of the distribution plenum allowing the air to travel in two substantially balanced symmetrically arranged flow paths, one of which is directed forwardly and upwardly and the other rearwardly and upwardly thereby balancing the conditions of humidity and temperature substantially throughout the entire apparatus. An air flow controller introduces outside air and exhausts circulating air as conditions require.

  • Patent number: 4020756
Abstract: A band clamping device for a machine wrapping or strapping a band, strip or the like about piece goods, such as boxes, containers, packages, crates and so forth, especially a plastic band or strip, comprising a stationary clamping jaw and a movable clamping jaw guided for movement towards and away from the stationary clamping jaw. The movable clamping jaw is articulated at an end hinge of a first element of a toggle lever, a second element of which can be pivoted by means of a drive about a further end hinge. Both clamping jaws possess essentially flat clamping surfaces intended to engage at the band and to hold such against the action of a tension or traction force. The connection line between the hinge points of the toggle lever together with the clamping surface of the clamping jaws enclose an acute angle open in the direction of the tension or traction force and the guide of the movable clamping jaw is elastically resilient in such direction.
