  • Patent number: 6226297
Abstract: A method for providing redundancy to an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) emulated local-area network (LAN) is disclosed. The ATM emulated LAN is served by a primary LAN Emulation Server, a Broadcast and Unknown Server (LES/BUS), and a LAN Emulation Configuration Server (LECS). A backup LES/BUS is coupled to the ATM emulated LAN. A logical redundancy virtual channel connection (VCC) is then established between the primary LES/BUS and the backup LES/BUS. When the redundancy VCC is present between the primary LES/BUS and the backup LES/BUS, the backup LES/BUS is placed in a dormant mode. However, when the redundancy VCC is absence between the primary LES/BUS and the backup LES/BUS, the backup LES/BUS is activated to serve any request generated by the ATM emulated LAN.

  • Patent number: 6212191
Abstract: A method for providing a security mechanism to an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) emulated local-area network (LAN) is disclosed. The ATM emulated LAN is served by a LAN Emulation Server (LES), a Broadcast and Unknown Server (BUS), and a LAN Emulation Configuration Server (LECS). After receiving a LE_JOIN_REQUEST from an LE client within the emulated LAN, the LES forms a LE_CONFIGURE_REQUEST on behalf of the LE client, by utilizing the information from the LE_JOIN_REQUEST. The LES then sends the LE_CONFIGURE_REQUEST to the LECS. In turn, the LECS sends back a LE_CONFIGURE_RESPONSE to the LES. After receiving the LE_CONFIGURE_RESPONSE from the LECS, a determination is made as to whether or not a status field within the LE_CONFIGURE_RESPONSE indicates a success and a target ATM address field within the LE_CONFIGURE_RESPONSE contains an ATM address of the LES.

  • Patent number: 6201802
Abstract: A base station timing analyzer measures the timing performance of a base station from within the base station coverage area without interruption or degradation of the system performance. The timing analyzer has a dummy signal generation mechanism that produces a dummy signal output based on a universal time input. An antenna couples a signal from an operating base station from a wireless link. A summer sums together the dummy signal and signal from the wireless link. A demodulation element receives the summed signal and searches for and demodulates each of the signals. A comparison unit compares the output of the demodulation element to determine the timing performance of the base station to provide an indication of the absolute time offset of the base station signal.

  • Patent number: 6198725
Abstract: A system for allocating resources at network elements along a path through a communications network. Resources are allocated at a network element along the path in response to a connection request message. The delay budget is the minimum of a calculated cell transfer delay and a calculated cell delay variation. The calculated cell transfer delay is determined by finding a difference between a target end to end cell delay and an accumulated cell delay, and then dividing that difference by a number of network elements remaining in the path between the network element and the end of the path. To determine the calculated cell delay variation, the network element first finds a difference between the Max CDV QoS parameter and the sum of the accumulated cell delay variation and the switching delay for the network element. The calculated cell delay variation is then equal to that difference divided by the number of network elements remaining in the path between the network element and the end of the path.

  • Patent number: 6192029
Abstract: A data communications system includes a server router (102), such as an access controller gateway, operably coupled to at least one client router (104), such as a base radio controller, by an asynchronous link, such as a LAN (106). The client router forwards data received from the server router and stored in the client router's outbound queue (110) synchronously to a device, such as a mobile station (202). The client router's outbound queue is maintained between a lower queue limit and an upper queue limit so as to both reduce the occurrence of data starvation and reduce the amount of data lost should the mobile station hand off to a new serving site. The server router calculates an optimum average send rate and transmits data in bursts at regular intervals, and adjusts the average send rate in response to changes in the outbound rate of the client router.

  • Patent number: 6188698
Abstract: A packet scheduling system for use in a switching node of a high speed packet switching network. Incoming packets are enqueued in connection queues. Each connection is classified as red (exceeding traffic profile) or green (within traffic profile). QOS priority is also identified for each connection. Packets are dequeued for transmission as a function of priority class and connection class. Higher priority class connections have priority over lower priority class connections. Within a given priority class of connections, green connections have priority over red connections. Round robin scheduling is used for packets from connections in the same priority and connection class. In addition, a dynamic priority coupling mechanism is provided to prevent red higher priority traffic from blocking green lower priority traffic.

  • Patent number: 6188678
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling a parameter associated with a first signal transmitted from a first station to a second station in a communication system monitors a second signal transmitted from the second station to the first station to determine a propagation state associated with the transmitted signals. A loop gain is adjusted based on the propagation state. The loop gain is used to adjust the size of commands used to adjust (i.e., increase or decrease) the parameter being controlled. If the propagation state is a quiescent state, the loop gain is set to one. If the propagation state is an active state, the loop gain is set to some value greater than one thereby increasing the size of the commands used to control the parameter. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the controlled parameter is a transmit power level of the first signal.

  • Patent number: 6181676
Abstract: A radio communication network comprising a plurality of communication terminals and a plurality of repeaters intermediate the communication terminals, with wayside communication paths being established between pairs of the repeaters via two radio channels carrying the same data. Protection switching of a wayside path is determined, in a preferred embodiment, by using one common wayside path to calculate the FEC (Forward Error Correction) and PEC (Parity Error Count). Switching to the better of said two channels is effected if FEC or PEC exceed predetermined thresholds. The common wayside path is defined as follows: (a) &Sgr; wayside A path+&Sgr; wayside B path −&Sgr; (wayside A ||wayside B), if waysides A and B are overlapped (||indicates overlapped portions of the two parameters.) (b) wayside A path OR wayside B path, if waysides A and B are not overlapped.
