  • Patent number: 6442169
Abstract: An open architecture platform bypasses data from the facilities of a telecommunications carrier, e.g. an incumbent local exchange carrier, by distinguishing between voice and data traffic, and handling voice and data traffic separately. An SS7 gateway receives and transmits SS7 signaling messages with the platform. When signaling for a call arrives, the SS7 gateway informs a control server on the platform. The control server manages the platform resources, including the SS7 gateway, tandem network access servers (NASs) and modem NASs. A tandem NAS receives the call over bearer channels. The control server determines whether the incoming call is voice traffic or data traffic, by the dialed number, and instructs the tandem NAS how to handle the call. Voiced traffic is transmitted to a switch for transmission from the platform. Data traffic is terminated at a modem NAS, where it is converted into a form suitable for a data network, such as a private data network or an Internet services provider (ISP).

  • Patent number: 6434169
Abstract: A relay device associated with each end point modem in a data communication network provides a system for transporting data over a communication channel employing voice compression. Each relay device exchanges relevant parameter information with its associated modem and with each other in order to negotiate compatible data transfer conditions. The protocol exchange between each relay and its associated modem will typically include the calculation of inter-loop delay values for echo cancellation and line probing for line equalization or bandwidth optimization. Supported data rates, modulation type and encoding information is also exchanged. The invention provides a system for full duplex transmission of data over modems while saving on bandwidth because of voice compression techniques.

  • Patent number: 6434166
Abstract: A universal DS-0 channelized format is provided wherein selected states of CAS bits are used to indicate to the transport mechanism when DS-0 channels are not being used for voice and are available for use for data transport. In addition, the T1 frame format carries CAS bits only in the first DS-0 channel, so that robbed bits are disabled and not used to carry ABCD signaling bits, thereby avoiding any risk of data corruption. Still further, a special CAS signaling value not defined as a CAS state, is employed in a frame nibble instead of a frame counter to indicate that the state is in the first DS-0 slot.

  • Patent number: 6434146
Abstract: A system and method for demultiplexing and distributing transport packets, such as MPEG-2 transport packets, by generating and associating a locally-generated header with each of the transport packets to create a self-contained modified packet which incorporates essential distribution information therein. The method for enhancing transport packet demultiplexing and distribution in a digital transport demultiplexing system that inputs a stream of digital multimedia transport packets is provided. Each of the transport packets includes a packet identifier (PID) to identify the digital program or elementary stream to which it corresponds. Local packet information is generated for each of the transport packets, which is used in identifying and distributing the transport packets. A local header is created that includes the generated local packet information, and the local header is linked to its corresponding transport packet to create a modified transport packet.

  • Patent number: 6430160
Abstract: A method (1000) of estimating the delays that data packets experiences along a path in an IP network is presented. The method involves sending probe packets (102), transmitted along the same path as the data whose delays are to be estimated, with a frequency dictated by statistics that include Poisson statistics. Information obtained about the delays in the probe packet transmissions may be used to estimate data delays.

  • Patent number: 6421358
Abstract: A system and associated method for delivering a data stream to an audience member a communications device associated with an audience member. A hybrid fiber coax (HFC) network is connected to the communications device for communicating data with the audience member. A synchronization processor receives broadcast event data of event objects of an event, live event data of event objects of the event, and static event data of event objects of the event. The synchronization processor generates a synchronized data stream having broadcast, live, and static event data for an event object of the event. The synchronization processor transmits the synchronized data stream to the communications device for access by the audience member via the HFC network. The synchronization processor processes the broadcast event data to determine an event object being broadcasted. The synchronization processor selects the live event data and the statice event data corresponding to the determined event object.

  • Patent number: 6411629
Abstract: Data packets are transmitted over a communications link in an interleaved manner. The link comprises a series of time-division multiplexed (TDM) frames, each frame comprising a plurality of time slots, a time slot being shorter than a data packet. Data packets are transmitted over a series of the TDM frames, one time slot in each of the series of frames being used to transmit a portion of that data packet. Different ones of the data packets begin in different TDM frames. Received data packets are allocated a modified header for use over the communications link. The modified header has a shorter address than the address in the received packet header and the modified header can be split into a plurality of parts which are distributed across the length of the transmitted packet.

  • Patent number: 6404760
Abstract: Several methods and corresponding apparatus to reduce multiple access interference in code division multiple access communications systems through successive interference cancellation techniques. An estimate of reliability of cancellation of a strongest interfering signal is formed from analysis of a pilot signal associated with the strongest signal. The estimate is used to derive a weight that is multiplied by a replica of the strongest signal to provide a weighted replica. The weighted replica is subtracted from a delayed version of the received channel. As a result, interference cancellation is robustly implemented when the strongest signal replica is most likely to be accurate and is not robustly implemented when the strongest signal replica is not likely to be accurate. This avoids combining a replica of the strongest signal with the received channel when the replica is more likely to contribute additional interference rather than reduce it.

  • Patent number: 6396841
Abstract: Repeater units in a stack are identical. Each repeater unit has an internal repeater and an internal bridge. The repeater stack is dual-speed, with each repeater connecting to a 10 Mbps (10M) backplane bus and to a 100 Mbps (100M) backplane bus in the stack's chassis. The internal repeater has a 10M repeater circuit that connects 10M ports to the 10M bus, and a 100M repeater circuit that connects 100M ports to the 100M bus. Ports are configured for either 10M or 100M operation. Data from 10M ports is repeated to all other 10M ports and to the 10M bus, but not to 100M ports or the 100M bus. Instead, a 10M port is connected to the internal bridge, which is also connected to a 100M port. The internal bridge stores and forwards packets to and from the 10M port and the 100M port. Only one internal bridge in the stack is configured to link the 10M and 100M ports. Other internal bridges are configured to connect a cascading port to the internal repeater. The cascading port is buffered by the internal bridge.

  • Patent number: 6392997
Abstract: An improved group-based routing update technique allows limited per neighbor customization of routing update messages generated by an interdomain router for its neighboring peer routers within autonomous systems of a computer network. The technique may be employed when the neighboring peer routers share identical routing policies, but the routing update messages differ only in certain attributes with known locations and lengths. Appropriate values of the location and length attributes for each neighboring router are calculated and stored during a replication stage of the improved technique. Before each message is transmitted, the proper location and length attributes of the message are updated with the stored values for the respective neighbor.

  • Patent number: 6388997
Abstract: A system and method for time division duplex communication over a single frequency band wherein guard time overhead is reduced by active adjustment of reverse link transmission timing as a function of round trip propagation time. A time frame is divided into a plurality of time slots, during each of which the base station transmits to a user station and the user station transmits to the base station. Communication is initiated by a round trip timing transaction. In response to a general polling message from the base station, a user station seeking to establish communication transmits a short reply message. The base station calculates the distance of the user station by measuring the propagation delay with respect to receipt of the reply message. The base station sends a timing adjustment command to the user station instructing the user station to advance or retard its timing according to the calculated distance, so as to minimize guard times between time slots.
