  • Patent number: 8391300
Abstract: A switching element and methods thereof are provided. The switching element includes a port from among a plurality of ports, which when configured to operate as a network protocol port sends and receives network information and when configured to operate as a storage protocol port sends and receives storage information. The port includes a control segment for generating a control signal for setting an operating mode of a serial and de-serializer (SERDES). The operating mode of the SERDES is selected based on whether the port is configured to operate as a network protocol port or as a storage protocol port.

  • Patent number: 8385332
Abstract: A new architecture provides network-based mobility in cellular networks that is built on Internet Protocol (IP)/Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) technologies, such as Virtual Private Local Area Network (LAN) Service (VPLS), the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) and BGP MPLS Layer 3 Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). The architecture consists of several building blocks that provide functionality for different aspects of cellular network mobility. One building block is network-based macro mobility in IP/MPLS networks. The macro mobility techniques described herein are built on extensions to a routing protocol such as BGP. Another building block relates to transferring subscriber context between network devices while preserving the IP address of the subscriber. The techniques described herein provide a subscriber context transfer mechanism for mobile subscriber management that is built on extensions to a routing protocol such as BGP.

  • Patent number: 8379638
Abstract: A technique for encapsulating data packets at a Data Link Layer to provide security functions. The technique first encrypts a payload to provide an encrypted payload. The encrypted payload is inserted in an output encapsulated frame. Also added to the output encapsulated frame is an encapsulation header that includes security information, such as a security packet index (SPI) value used to identify a security association (SA). Because the output encapsulated frame may now be longer than maximum allowed Ethernet Path Maximum Transmission Unit (PMTU), the encapsulation header also preferably includes a fragmentation field. The fragmentation field supports the ability to fragment the encrypted datagrams into smaller pieces.

  • Patent number: 8369326
Abstract: A gateway device is disclosed for deployment at user premises, which offers applications services similar to those of a server from the premises, albeit managed by a service management center via the network. For each application service, gateway programming provides application server communication with a client functionality of an endpoint device, for the respective service, communicated on top of network layer communications within the premises and through the wide area network. The application service logic in the gateway device also enforces authorization, authentication, configuration, or use of the service via the endpoint device. Management of the application service is responsive to communications with the service management center via the wide area network. A gateway device of this type, for example, may offer PC or TV type user interfaces. The gateway also may establish peer-to-peer communications with other similar devices.

  • Patent number: 8363636
Abstract: The invention provides a method and system for distributing personalized content to potentially large numbers of recipients. A pool is selected, from among all content available for distribution, of those content elements that will be made available for simultaneous distribution, and personalized content is selected for distribution from that pool. The content of the pool can change with new selections over time. For each individual recipient, content elements in the pool are examined to determine if they are predicted to be of sufficient interest to that recipient for distribution, and if so, those content elements are distributed. If not, successive content elements in the pool are examined, relaxing the standard for sufficient interest, until at least one content element is found and distributed to the individual recipient.

  • Patent number: 8355349
Abstract: A network-based system and method for providing anonymous voice communications using the telephone network and data communications links under the direction of a Call Broker and associated network elements. A user (the call initiator) present in a text chat room session establishes a data connection to Call Broker and, after qualifying for access (e.g., using credit card information) and providing a callback number, receives voice session information and participant access codes for each desired participant in a voice call. The initiator causes session information and participant codes to be passed to one or more selected chat participants in the current text chat room. When a selected participant uses the received session information, and enters the received participant code and a callback number, the Call Broker in cooperation with a Network Adjunct Processor (NAP) completes voice links to the initiator and the selected participant(s).

  • Patent number: 8355376
Abstract: A base station for use in an OFDM/OFDMA wireless network. The base station transmits system-specific broadcast control channel (BCCH) information in a first group of time-frequency slots and transmits cell-specific BCCH information in a second group of time-frequency slots. The time-frequency slots in the first group are orthogonal to the time-frequency slots in the second group. The base station transmits the system-specific BCCH information in the same time-frequency slots as a neighboring base station. The neighboring base station transmits cell-specific BCCH information in a third group of time-frequency slots that may or may not be orthogonal to the time-frequency slots in the second group.

  • Patent number: 8351444
Abstract: Communication environment switchover may be provided. A received signal strength level may be determined corresponding to a signal sent from a first device and received at a second device. The received signal strength level may be measured at the second device. In addition, the first device may be re-provisioned. For example, the first device may be re-provisioned to communicate in a second environment if the first device is provisioned to communicate in a first environment and if the received signal strength level is greater than a first threshold value. Furthermore, the first device to be re-provisioned to communicate in the first environment if the first device is provisioned to communicate in the second environment and if the received signal strength level is less than a second threshold value. The second threshold value may be less than the first threshold value.

  • Patent number: 8345700
Abstract: MPLS labels may be inserted in IPv6 source or destination IP address fields, potentially reducing network overhead bandwidth. In one implementation, a network device may receive a packet; determine whether the packet is an ingress packet for a MPLS LSP; determine an MPLS label for the packet when the packet is an ingress packet; insert the MPLS label in a portion of a source IP address field or a destination IP address field of the packet, when the packet is an ingress packet; and output the packet to the LSP.

  • Patent number: 8340013
Abstract: A method of assembling a plurality of frames including cell/packet-formatted data according to a predetermined frame format for transmission in a communication signal in a wireless or satellite environment. The method begins by assembling a data payload for each frame having a first variable size, including at least one of a partial data cell/packet and a complete data cell/packet. Then, for each frame a block code having a second variable size is generated for use in error correction. Each frame is provided with a frame header which defines aspects of the frame. Finally, the data payload, the block code and the format header are combined to form a frame corresponding to the plurality of frames, the format header defining a first portion of the frame, the data payload defining a second portion of the frame and the block code defining a third portion of the frame.

  • Patent number: 8340192
Abstract: A Wyner-Ziv coding scheme jointly utilizes multiple side information at the decoder is described. A new probability model is introduced based on an extended turbo decoding trellis, so that the transitional probability is calculated from the probabilities conditioned on multiple side information. The proposed scheme handles multiple side information in a multi-dimensional manner to potentially achieve coding performance better than either selecting one side information or generating a single side information by averaging several side information. When the decoder receives multiple streams of parity bits, the conditional probabilities on the parity bits from the multiple streams all contribute in turbo decoding. The errors existing in some of the streams can be automatically eliminated during the decoding process.
