  • Patent number: 5706580
Abstract: The end surface 2e of the press-fit portion 2c of the axle 2 is machined with high precision to serve as a reference surface for measuring the negative bearing clearance upon completion of the assembly. The inner ring 3 is press-fitted on the press-fit portion 2c of the axle 2 and is fixed in position by the nut 6 screwed on the threaded portion 2d of the axle 2. In this axle bearing assembly, the inner ring 3 abuts against the shoulder portion 2d of the axle 2 with no clearance defined therebetween, and the negative bearing clearance is assured.

  • Patent number: 5685068
Abstract: A method and device for establishing the correct amount that a bearing should be driven up a shaft involves measuring the strain on at least one of the side faces of the bearing ring through use of a sensor arranged on the side face of the bearing ring. The strain is measured while the bearing is being driven or moved along the shaft. The instantaneous bearing internal clearance reduction in the bearing can then be calculated from the measured instantaneous strain and the value for the known initial bearing internal clearance of the bearing.

  • Patent number: 5680700
Abstract: An electric-motor fuel pump that includes a housing with a fuel inlet and a fuel outlet, and an electric motor with a rotor responsive to application of electrical power for rotating within the housing. A pump mechanism includes an impeller coupled to the rotor for corotation with the rotor and having a periphery with a circumferential array of impeller vanes. A pair of plates oppose the sides of the impeller and a split ring surrounds the periphery of the impeller to form an arcuate pumping channel around the periphery of the impeller. Inlet and outlet ports at opposed ends of the pumping channel are operatively coupled to the inlet and outlet in the pump housing. Channels extend radially inwardly from the pockets in each side face of the impeller, and are interconnected by through-passages that extend through the impeller. A vapor vent is disposed in one of the side plates for sequential registry with the impeller through-openings for venting vapor from the pumping channel.

  • Patent number: 5659956
Abstract: Hollow ball bearings of improved strength and uniformity are produced by causing identical first and second hemispheric units to rotate at different speeds in facing relationship upon a common axis, and forcing the hemispheres into aligned contact. The frictional heat generated by such contact melts the material adjacent the open rim of each contacting hemisphere. The molten material is distributed by centrifugal force about the interior of the hemispheres. The speeds of the two hemispheres are then equalized with attendant cooling and re-solidification of the molten material, thereby producing a hollow sphere.

  • Patent number: 5657526
Abstract: A method for fabricating and installing a split riding ring for use on rotary cylinders that eliminates the need to remove associated equipment from the rotary cylinders to repair and install a new riding ring. The apparatus consists of a riding ring forged in one piece and machined and stress relieved. Both sides of the annular ring are then provided with opposing side pockets. Side plates are positioned within the side pockets and held in place by a first set of bolts located within drill and tapped holes. Holes are drilled through the side pockets, side plates and the riding ring. The side plates are removed and the one piece ring is cut at a forty five degree angle with its central axis of rotation to form a first and second segment and shims are attached to both segments to compensate for the metal loss. A second set of bolts are inserted through the holes in the side pockets and the side plates to form a body bound fit and the completed split ring assembly.

  • Patent number: 5653022
Abstract: The slow production rates associated with cutting machines for cutting extruded metal tubing to length are avoided in an apparatus that continually cuts extruded metal tubing (46) and which include a reel (44) for providing a coil of (42) of metal tubing (46) to a cutting nip defined by rollers (66) carrying scoring knives (68). The tubing is continuously moved through the nip by a continuously operated set of feeding rolls (70) and then passed to a set of pull rolls (74) which are driven at a more rapid rate to place the tubing (46) in tension to cause it to be severed where scored. Also disclosed is a method of continuously cutting extruded metal tubing.
