Patent number: 5878496Abstract: A process for manufacturing a component on which in-service stresses are imposed by in-service loading conditions. The process generally entails fabricating the component such that residual stresses are induced in the component that substantially offset one or more primary stresses which would otherwise limit the maximum service life of the component. The residual stresses are induced by creating compressive stresses in the component that extend sufficiently beneath the working surface of the component during fabrication. In order to appropriately attain the necessary residual stresses, the process of this invention includes developing a model of the component, and then applying the in-service loading conditions to the model to determine the in-service stresses on the component. Thereafter, at least one of the in-service stresses is identified as being critical, i.e., a stress that establishes the maximum service life of the component.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 1996Date of Patent: March 9, 1999Assignee: Purdue Research FoundationInventors: Chunghorng R. Patent number: 5873165Abstract: A pickup truck cab and box marrying and decking system for vehicle assembly plants is adapted to newer style pickup trucks in which portions of the box front end extend forwardly to wrap around the back corners of the cab to provide a flowing appearance. The disclosed system lifts the cab and box sections off skids on a first conveyor and transfers them to over a second conveyor bringing in a chassis frame. Measurement devices determine the position of locating fixtures on the frame. The cab and box sections are then brought together, or married, and are precisely aligned with the frame locating fixtures. The cab and box sections are then lowered to deck the married sections on the frame in precise alignment with the locating fixtures.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1996Date of Patent: February 23, 1999Assignees: K.C. Patent number: 5862592Abstract: A cage for a roller bearing which is free of fretting and abnormal noise, which can be manufactured at low cost, and which can be easily mounted in the bearing. The cage is formed by bending a metal sheet having pockets into a ring shape, temporarily joining its ends, heat-treating the ring thus formed to remove stress, and separating the temporarily joined portion. Such a cage tends to rotate slower than the raceway members on the driving side of the bearing, making it possible to reduce fretting. Such a cage can be used under high-temperature conditions.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 1997Date of Patent: January 26, 1999Assignee: NTN CorporationInventors: Kazuyoshi Harimoto, Tsutomu Hashimoto, Eiji Ohsugi, Keiji Suzuki, Kiyoshi Kaneko, Atsushi Yamashita

Patent number: 5860903Abstract: A method and apparatus for supporting a roll mantle of a roll for a paper machine or equivalent in a lateral direction, in particular in the direction transverse to a principal loading direction, such as the nip plane. The roll mantle is rotatingly supported on a stationary roll axle, e.g., by support and loading members, and is displaceable in relation to the axle substantially in the principal loading direction. The roll mantle is also supported on the roll axle radially by glide bearing elements acting in opposite radial directions so that, when the roll mantle is displaced in the principal loading direction, the movement of the roll mantle is guided to take place along a predetermined path.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 1997Date of Patent: January 19, 1999Assignee: Valmet CorporationInventor: Juhani Niskanen

Patent number: 5845401Abstract: A rugged spindle for a disk certifier that test the disks of a hard disk drive. The spindle contains a first bearing and a second bearing that are coupled together by a shaft. The first bearing is coupled to a chuck that captures a disk. The second bearing is coupled to the spindle shaft of an electric motor which rotates the disk. The bearings each contain an outer graphite sheath that is separated from a hardened housing by an air bearing. The connecting shaft is bonded to the first and second bearings by an adhesive that is injected through longitudinal passages of the shaft. The bonding adhesive flows along the interface of the connecting shaft and bearings until the adhesive fills an indicator slot of the shaft. Air bearings are created during the bonding process of the second bearing to insure an accurate relationship between the two bearings and the housing.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 1997Date of Patent: December 8, 1998Assignee: Phase Metrics, Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey K. Patent number: 5822861Abstract: The invention relates to a method of manufacturing a roller bearing comprising a cage made from a thermoplastic polymer-containing material. By cross-linking the polymeric material its properties, such as form retention and compatibility with lubricants, are improved. A roller bearing provided with a cage made from suitably cross-linked thermoplastic polymer-containing material can be used even at temperatures above the melting point of the polymer. According to the invention a roller bearing is manufactured by forming a cage from thermoplastic polymer-containing material, providing it with rotating bodies and only then cross-linking the material. This avoids damage to an otherwise already rigid cage during the insertion of the rotating bodies.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 1994Date of Patent: October 20, 1998Assignee: SKF Industrial Trading & Development Company B.V.Inventors: Vendran Andelo Tadic, Johan Christian Marinus Bras, Leslie Berryman

Patent number: 5822859Abstract: An improved method for retaining a separable bearing race to a inner bearing member by rolling over a deformable lip of the inner bearing member into a race abutting bead. The outer edge and inner surface of the separable race are cut away partially by a shallow, continuous, conical relieved portion with sufficient length and radial thickness to accommodate the degree of material swelling just inside of the race that results from the lip deformation process. Consequently, the swelled material does not bind unevenly on or stress the race, which maintains solid and secure contact with the inner bearing member.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 1996Date of Patent: October 20, 1998Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Jeffrey Steven Kessen, Debbie Sue Wadsworth-Dubbert
