  • Patent number: 4674399
Abstract: A piston for an internal combustion engine has the conventional skirt replaced by top and bottom bearing surfaces spaced apart by a substantial gap of constant width. The top bearing surfaces are connected to the piston crown through the ring band whereas the bottom surfaces are attached to piston bosses by struts. The gap allows the passage of lubricant to the cylinder to ensure adequate lubrication of the bearing surfaces.

  • Patent number: 4672883
Abstract: A reaction mechanism for use in a vacuum brake booster (10). A lever (86) transfers a reaction force from a first plunger (64) into a second plunger (110) to provide an operator with an indication of the output force being produced in response to an input force. A resilient member (118) urges a first connecting member (116) into engagement with the lever (86). When a predetermined input force is applied, the reaction force overcomes the resilient member (118) and thereafter allows the input force to be directly transmitted through a second connecting member (122) and added to the output force.

  • Patent number: 4669360
Abstract: An input shaft and an output shaft can rotate relative to each other. Pressure supplied to a pressure-responsive actuator depends on the axial position of a movable valve member. A transmission arrangement serves to move the valve member only in the axial direction as the input and output shafts rotate relative to each other. The valve member and each of the input and output shafts are wholly outside one another.

  • Patent number: 4667576
Abstract: A yarn false twisting apparatus is disclosed which comprises a pair of rotating circular discs having cooperating friction surfaces for engaging a running yarn at a twisting zone. A pressure applying member is positioned to apply a biasing force to the rear surface of one of the discs locally at the twisting zone, and the pressure applying member comprises a receptacle slideably mounting a piston which extends from the end of the receptacle to engage the disc. The receptacle is eccentrically mounted to permit selective positioning of the biasing force with respect to the yarn path of travel. The discs are mounted on pivotal rocking arms whereby the ratio of yarn twist to yarn speed may be adjusted, and an eccentrically mounted pin provides closely controlled adjustability for the arms and thus the twist ratio.

  • Patent number: 4665803
Abstract: A brake actuating master cylinder unit for bicycles and the like comprising a unit mountable upon the handlebars of a bicycle, a master cylinder having a piston mounted therewithin, a bellofram secured to the inner surface of the master cylinder at one end thereof and at the piston engaging closed end thereof secured to the piston by means of a plurality of projecting tits extending through complementary apertures in the piston. A snap ring preferably is used to positively secure the tits with the piston. A two-part piston rod is employed between the piston and the brake actuating handle to allow same to return to the normal, non-actuated position freely and without withdrawing the piston therealong. This two-part slidable connection permits positive actuation of the piston during braking operation, but yet permits free separation and non-positive return upon completion of the brake actuation.

  • Patent number: 4658704
Abstract: A brake booster of tandem type includes a valve body, a rear power piston, a front power piston and a centerbody slidably extending through a centerplate which is centrally disposed within a shell, all of which are integrally connected together by utilizing a hub. An end of the hub located adjacent to the valve body is formed with an engaging portion which extends radially outward, while the shank portion of the valve body is formed with an axial groove which permits the engaging portion to pass there through and is also formed with an engaging recess circumferentially displaced from the axial groove and receiving the engaging portion. The engagement between the engaging portion and the engaging recess allows the hub to be assembled with the valve body while preventing the withdrawal of the hub forwardly from the valve body and also preventing the relative rotation therebetween, all with a greatly simplified construction.

  • Patent number: 4656924
Abstract: A pulsation limiter for a manually actuated hydraulic valve includes a spring biased, motion retarding plunger in an auxiliary bore within the valve housing and having a helical groove disposed on its periphery abuts against the input sleeve during the initial portion of its travel to actuate the brakes, a check valve in the plunger allowing filling of the expanding cavity in the auxiliary bore behind the motion retarding plunger. When the brake pedal is released partially or completely, the input sleeve moves until it abuts against the plunger. Thereafter, the pressure buildup in the auxiliary bore cavity closes the check valve in the plunger and the input sleeve can only move relatively slowly back to its initial position as the fluid trapped in the auxiliary bore cavity exits through the helical groove.

  • Patent number: 4653272
Abstract: Fluid actuation device with compensation for wear, particularly for friction clutch mechanisms of the type having a cylinder in which there are placed a first piston resting on a spring and a second piston extended by a declutching control rod, and in which the space between the pistons is filled with an incompressible fluid. The cylinder carries a separation wall between two compartments which house respectively the first and the second pistons. An orifice for communication between said compartments carried by the separation wall is associated with a stopper valve rigidly connected to a membrane that is subjected to a pressure for control and transmission of a thrust force on the cylinder and for driving the control rod.

  • Patent number: 4651623
Abstract: A work cylinder having a piston of single-body construction and a cushioning arrangement integrally formed on the piston includes a cylinder housing having a chamber formed therein divided into first and second work chambers by the piston. First and second piston extensions extend into first and second graduated chamber portions formed at opposite ends of the cylinder housing. A sealing material, bonded to the exterior surface of the piston, exhibits a dual cup-shaped piston seal around the center portion and annular cushion seals on the piston extensions. The cushion seals are at an angle such that, when in contact with a first chamber reduction, a seal results. Additionally, in the opposite direction, the cushion seals act as a check valve whereby fluid pressure introduced to a second chamber reduction depresses the cushion seals and flows into the selected work chamber.
