The method detects a wearing state of the wearable device and includes: emitting, by the light emitting unit, light of at least two different wavelengths to a subject in a time division manner; receiving, by the light receiving unit, reflected light corresponding to light of each wavelength after being reflected by the subject; obtaining intensity of reflected light corresponding to the light of each wavelength respectively; calculating a fluctuation range of a light intensity ratio, which is a ratio between intensity of the reflected light corresponding to light of the at least two different wavelengths received by a same light receiving unit; and determining that the device is in a wearing state when the fluctuation range is greater than or equal to a first threshold.

    Abstract: Techniques of identifying gestures include detecting and classifying inner-wrist muscle motions at a user's wrist using micron-resolution radar sensors. For example, a user of an AR system may wear a band around their wrist. When the user makes a gesture to manipulate a virtual object in the AR system as seen in a head-mounted display (HMD), muscles and ligaments in the user's wrist make small movements on the order of 1-3 mm. The band contains a small radar device that has a transmitter and a number of receivers (e.g., three) of electromagnetic (EM) radiation on a chip (e.g., a Soli chip. This radiation reflects off the wrist muscles and ligaments and is received by the receivers on the chip in the band. The received reflected signal, or signal samples, are then sent to processing circuitry for classification to identify the wrist movement as a gesture.

The device provides a low-cost active display system capable of use in many free-standing configurations. The device incorporates a modular design that has both reusable and non-reusable elements. The modular design further accommodates specially designed display screens which are electronically modified to match different battery configurations to maximize battery life. The device incorporates various sensors to recognize certain ambient conditions, customer proximity and customer approach direction. In one embodiment, the display largely remains dormant until a first long range trigger signal is detected, at which time the device reactivates the modified display and a second short range trigger signal is detected which then retrieves content from the memory to display it. The result is drastically extended battery life and reduced maintenance cost.
