  • Patent number: 5556321
Abstract: An apparatus for grinding an elongated knife blade used in a veneer lathe or a veneer slicer has a blade mount with a mounting surface on which the blade is fixed. In order to prevent a thermal distortion of the cutting edge of the blade after it has been ground by the grinding wheel and naturally cools, the blade mount and the blade thereon are cooled by supplying a cooling medium even to an intervening surface or area therebetween. The blade and mount are also cooled entirely by direct contact with the cooling medium. The grinding wheel is controlled such that when it is lowered to abut against the blade, a resistance torque increase is detected and the grinding wheel is raised slightly to a grinding start level from where the grinding feed and stroke of the wheel is started so that interference between the wheel and the blade is prevented during the initial longitudinal stroke of the wheel along the blade.

  • Patent number: 5547417
Abstract: A method of polishing a thin film formed on a semiconductor substrate. In a method of the present invention a polishing pad is rotated. A substrate is pressed against the rotating polishing pad so that the thin film to be polished is placed in direct contact with the polishing pad. During polishing, the polishing pad is continually conditioned by forming a plurality of grooves into the polishing pad. The grooves are formed by a conditioning block having a substantially planar bottom surface with a plurality of groove generating points extending from the substantially planar surface of the conditioning block. The grooves are generated by sweeping and rotating the conditioning block between an outer radius and an inner radius of the polishing pad.

  • Patent number: 5544984
Abstract: An indexable cutting insert comprises an upper surface, a bottom surface and side surfaces extending therebetween. Between two cutting corners, the rake surface is formed such that the rake angle is largest next to the two cutting corners and smallest at a point somewhere between the two cutting corners, preferably at or near the middle of the cutting edge. In this way, the cutting edge is strongest where the pressure load from the workpiece is largest, at the same time as a relatively small average rake angle is attained. This configuration decreases the cutting forces and the energy consumption.

  • Patent number: 5542152
Abstract: A tilt adjustment mechanism having an upper housing, a lower housing and a shaft assembly is disclosed. The shaft assembly receives the gears which are pressed on either end of shaft. The shaft fits through locating slots in the lower housing. Each of the gears are activated by internal gears located on each side of the upper housing. The internal gears are integrally formed with the upper housing. The upper housing is hinged on the lower housing and can rotate 20 degrees. The shaft assembly mechanism provides a torsion bar function to insure that the upper housing moves evenly with respect to the lower housing. Even motion in the upwards and downwards directions of the housing is provided by even rotational torsional motion and opposite rotational torsional motion of the shaft assembly of the tilt adjustment mechanism. The shaft assembly mechanism decouples the frictional load in the two different rotational directions about its shaft.

  • Patent number: 5542324
Abstract: A special device for producing by machining a multiplicity of shaped bores or shaped external surfaces, such as squares, hexagons, ellipses, polygons. This is done by superimposing a forced radial motion, produced by purely rolling-action elements, on the rotational motion of a tool holder in such a way that the cutting edge of a tool inserted in the tool holder follows the required path as the tool holder rotates. The device enables shaped bores and external surfaces to be produced not only cleanly and to the required tolerances, but also very rapidly and simply. The form drilling and turning device can be used on normal drilling and machining machines and machining centers, as well as on turning machines and power tools.

  • Patent number: 5540210
Abstract: A guide for use with a portable power saw has a cutting tool which revolves about an arbor in order to cut a surface. A set of wheels is coupled to the power saw. The set of wheels is arranged substantially on a line extending through the arbor. The line is perpendicular to the surface during a cutting operation. This allows for easy radius cuts to be made by the power saw without straining either the saw blade or the operator.

  • Patent number: 5537987
Abstract: An apparatus and method for processing and cutting structural concrete is disclosed in which the apparatus includes a first, larger cutting blade and at least one smaller cutting/finishing blade positioned adjacent to the larger cutting blade. The smaller blade have a beveled or concave cutting surface so that as the larger cutting blade forms cuts into the concrete, the smaller cutting/finishing blade rounds or bevels the edges of the cut. The rounded or beveled edges have a greater surface are and, therefore, additional strength to prevent chipping or cracking along the cuts. In the preferred embodiment, a smaller blade is positioned adjacent to each side of the larger blade to round or bevel both edges of the cut as the cut is formed by the larger blade. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, the above described apparatus can be used on previously made cuts in concrete to round or bevel the edges and avoid breakage or chipping.

  • Patent number: 5531631
Abstract: A microfinishing machine particularly adapted for microfinishing external cylindrical surfaces such as found on internal combustion engine crankshaft bearing journal. The machine includes a microfinishing tool assembly which presses an abrasive coated film against the workpiece and a gaging tool assembly which enables in-process diameter measurements to be made. The microfinishing tool assembly features means for shifting the center of pressure exerted on the abrasive coated film along the axial surface of the cylindrical surface being machined. Such adjustment can be achieved by shifting the pivot axis of the tool or by exerting an external torsional load onto the tool. The microfinishing tool assembly according to this invention allows axial form errors such as tapering of journal surfaces to be corrected in the microfinishing operation.

  • Patent number: 5528796
Abstract: A hinge assembly removably connects two bodies for pivotable movement relative to one another. The hinge assembly includes a first convex arcuate surface and a first concave arcuate surface on one body and a second convex arcuate surface and a second concave arcuate surface on the other body. The radii of curvature of the first convex arcuate surface and the second concave arcuate surface are about equal, and the radii of curvature of the second convex arcuate surface and the first concave arcuate surface are about equal, and each surface preferably defines an arc of about 180 degrees. The bodies may be assembled to one another so that the first convex arcuate surface slidingly engages the second concave arcuate surface and the first concave arcuate surface slidingly engages the second convex arcuate surface, thereby preventing relative movement of the bodies in a direction transverse to the pivot axis.

  • Patent number: 5527214
Abstract: The tool includes a body which supports angularly spaced roughing hones and angularly spaced finishing hones for radially inward and outward movement between collapsed and expanded positions. Expansion of the roughing hones is effected by axially spaced ramps when a rod is moved linearly in one direction while expansion of the finishing hones is effected by additional axially spaced ramps when the rod is shifted linearly in the other direction. By turning an adjusting nut from the free end of the tool body, the axial spacing between the ramps of the roughing hones may be changed for purposes of adjusting the inclination of the roughing hones. A second adjusting nut coaxial with the first nut may also be turned from the free end of the tool body to change the axial spacing between the ramps of the finishing hones and thereby effect adjustment of the inclination of the finishing hones.
