  • Patent number: 5320665
Abstract: A method for recovering a metal from a metal ore or waste metal-containing material comprises contacting the ore or waste material with an acidic leaching solution effective for leaching and forming a pregnant solution of at least one metal to be recovered, and contacting the pregnant solution with a steel substrate so as to cement the at least one metal and from which one can recover the metal. The method is particularly suited to the recovery of precious metals such as gold. The steel substrate can be particulate, such as steel shavings, so that the steel substrate is used in a form which results in a high surface area to volume ratio of steel.

  • Patent number: 5308043
Abstract: The top-submergable injection lance has an elongate conduit which extends between upper and discharge ends and defines a bore, for the supply of reactants, through the conduit and an annular, alloy steel tip at the discharge end. The conduit comprises an inner pipe defining the bore, an outer pipe, and a third pipe which divides an annular volume between the inner and an outer pipes for circulation of coolant fluid. The tip is defined by inner and outer peripheral surfaces merging at a sharp lower edge and a top surface extending between the peripheral surfaces. The top surface of the tip joins the inner and outer pipes so as to be contactable by the coolant fluid. The frusto-conical inner peripheral surface provides a continuation of the bore which increases in cross-section to an opening at the lower edge.

  • Patent number: 5303901
Abstract: A blowing lance for refining metals by blowing a gas onto a surface of a metal bath is presented. This lance has an adjustable tuyere for generating a supersonic refining gas flow and a blowing head with a set of fixed tuyeres opening into a front dome of the blowing head and dividing the supersonic gas flow into individual free jets. A cyclic modulator modulates a flow rate through the set of fixed tuyeres so that the flow rate in a first subset of tuyeres does not vary synchronously with the flow rate in a second subset of tuyeres, i.e., the flow rates in both subsets of tuyeres increase or decrease at the same time and they do not reach their minimum value or their maximum value at the same moment.

  • Patent number: 5302184
Abstract: The specification discloses a process for producing a ferroalloy in a smelting vessel. A material containing an alloying metal is injected into a molten bath contained in the vessel. A flux, a carbonaceous material and an oxygen-containing gas are also injected into the vessel. A gas which may be the oxygen-containing gas is injected into the molten bath in order to stir it. The rates of injection of the various components are controlled to achieve control of the oxidizing and reducing environment within the vessel consistent with a rapid rate of injection. The material containing the alloying metal is either reduced and incorporated into the metal phase or oxidized and incorporated into the slag. Combustion gases above the molten bath are oxidized to provide further heat to the process. Alloyed metal or slag containing the alloying metal are recovered as product. The process is applicable to the production of ferroalloys such as ferrochromium, ferromanganese, ferronickel and ferrovanadium.

  • Patent number: 5300137
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for removing mercury from contaminated soils and industrial wastes are provided. The removed mercury may be recovered. A furnace vaporizes the mercury containing portion and the vapors are condensed. In one embodiment, an individual heating stage volatilizes water vapor and other volatile contaminants, such as hydrocarbons, with substantial vaporization of the mercury-containing portion, subsequently, a second temperature higher than the first is employed to vaporize the mercury containing portion. In one embodiment, a metallic salt reacts with sulfur in the material to form a stable solid sulfur compound to reduce sulfur content in the gaseous effluent. The addition of a metallic salt may also be employed to react with mercury halides to release elemental mercury therefrom. The contaminated material is thereby converted from one which is hazardous due to mercury contamination to one which is non-hazardous. The effluent is treated to reduce environmental hazards in the same.
