  • Patent number: 7181955
Abstract: The consistency of a pulp slurry in a pipe 12 is determined using a pair of effective sound speeds a1eff and a2eff of the fluid/pipe system. The pair of effective system sound speed measurements are taken at two sensing regions X1, X2 along the pipe wherein each of the sensing regions comprises a different system cross sectional area compliance. The pair of effective system sound speeds a1eff and a2eff are provided to signal processing logic 160, which determines at least the composition of the fluid 12 flowing in the pipe 112. The effective system sound speeds a1eff and a2eff may be provided by a pair of sound speed meters positioned at sensing regions X1, X2 wherein the sound speed meters utilize a spatial array of acoustic pressure sensors placed at predetermined axial locations along the pipe 112. One technique uses acoustic spatial array signal processing techniques with the direction of propagation of the acoustic signals along the longitudinal axis of the pipe 112.

  • Patent number: 7178405
Abstract: A pressure sensor includes a surface sheet whose front side is an operating surface and a substrate sheet that includes a plurality of switches and that is disposed below the back side of the surface sheet at a predetermined space therebetween. When the operating surface is depressed, the surface sheet is deformed toward the substrate sheet and a switch of the plurality of switches is turned into an input state, and a resolution of a switch signal from each of the switches varies in accordance with the amount of a pressing force applied on the operating surface. Therefore, an electronic device, such as a cellular phone, installed with the pressure sensor can have various functions realized by a variation in the resolution.

  • Patent number: 7168294
Abstract: An apparatus and method for sensing chemical and/or biological analytes includes a deflectable arm of a microcantilever at least partially embedded within a sensing element. A gaseous or liquid medium which may include the analyte being detected is introduced to the sensing element. The sensing element undergoes volumetric expansion or contraction in the presence of the analyte sought to be detected, typically by adsorbing the analyte. The volumetric change of the sensing element causes the deflectable arm to deflect. The deflectable arm includes at least one measurable physical property which changes when the arm deflects. Detecting means are provided to measure the change in the physical property to determine the presence and amount of analyte present. An array of microcantilevers in which each microcantilever is dedicated to detecting a particular analyte which may be included in the medium, is also provided.

  • Patent number: 7168327
Abstract: A method is disclosed of using external polymeric analytical techniques to predict in-vivo polymeric performance, more particularly, viscoelastic property characterization for performance modeling of biomedical devices that incorporate a polymeric component and are load-bearing during service. Time-Temperature Superposition can be used to accelerate external testing of pertinent properties. Boltzmann's superposition provides a mathematical methodology for determining the time-dependent strain that develops in response to an imposed stress history. The modeling of the present invention provides an opportunity to describe and predict behavior of the device during in-vivo service, as well as it providing a basis for evaluating alternate “candidate” polymers for use in the construction of the device.

  • Patent number: 7168302
Abstract: An inside of an evaporated fuel processing system including a fuel tank is closed after changing an internal pressure of the evaporated fuel processing system to a target pressure value. After the closing, a diagnostic section variably sets a start timing for calculating a pressure change within the evaporated fuel processing system based on a timing when the internal pressure of the evaporated fuel processing system changes from the target pressure value to a peak pressure value. Then, a change amount between the respective internal pressure values detected by a detector at the set start timing and at a termination timing, which comes after the start timing, is calculated. The diagnostic section diagnose a leak within the evaporated fuel processing system based on the calculated change amount. Thus, the variably set start timing allows the diagnosis time to be shortened.

  • Patent number: 7165462
Abstract: Systems and methods of testing individual sliders are disclosed. One embodiment is a test system that includes a mechanical stress system, a quasi-static measurement system, a transport system, and a slider holder. The individual sliders to be tested are aligned in a row in the slider holder, and the slider holder secures the sliders. The measurement system performs quasi-static measurements on sliders in the slider holder simultaneously. The transport system then transports the slider holder to the mechanical stress system. The mechanical stress system applies mechanical stress to the sliders in slider holder. The transport system then transports the slider holder again to the quasi-static measurement system. This process repeats a desired number of times to complete testing.

  • Patent number: 7162916
Abstract: Individual cylinder output deviations from a normal operating engine cylinder are detected via an analysis of crank shaft speed fluctuations. In the detection phase, the engine is operated at a steady state low idle condition, and engine speed data is collected over a plurality of engine cycles. This data is then averaged, filtered and compared to expected engine speed data. A substantial deviation from the expected speed data in the region of crank shaft angles associated with an individual cylinder during its power stroke adjacent its top dead center position indicates a power level deviation in that cylinder. The magnitude of the power level deviation can then be assessed through a similar procedure where engine speed data is collected, averaged, filtered and compared to expected engine speed data when the engine is operating in a steady state rated condition.
