  • Patent number: 6816361
Abstract: A desktop computer has a pedestal, a front housing, a motherboard, a display, and a rear cover. The pedestal is used to support the desktop computer on a desk. The bottom of the front housing is pivotally mounted on the pedestal and tilt-able in a forward-backward direction. The front housing has a front panel facing a user, a top panel horizontally fixed on a top edge of the front panel, and a bottom panel horizontally fixed on a bottom edge of the front panel. The display is fixed vertically on a front side of the front panel. The desktop computer combines the display with the computer housing so as to decrease the volume and simplify the structure. Furthermore, since the display is detachable fixed on the computer housing, the maintenance and the replacement of the display are easier and feasible.

  • Patent number: 6809929
Abstract: A heat sink assembly having a retaining device includes a heat sink (30), a retention frame (10), a rectangular fastener (50), four pins (20), and four springs (40). The heat sink includes a base (32) defining four bores (38) therein. The frame is secured to a printed circuit board (60) around an electronic package (70), and defines a pair of through holes (16). A pair of posts (55) depends from opposite sides of the fastener. The pins are received through the bores of the base and in the fastener. The springs surround the pins respectively between the base and the fastener. The posts are deformably extended through the through holes thereby compressing the springs and sandwiching the base between the frame and the springs. The springs cooperatively provide evenly distributed pressing forces on the base. The heat sink is thus easily, firmly and evenly secured to the electronic package.

  • Patent number: 6809925
Abstract: A dual-purpose computer according to the invention has a gravity-actuated switch mounted therein or thereon. The gravity-actuated switch is used to control the speed of a cooling fan for the computer. When the computer is operated in a horizontal orientation such as a typical rack-mounted server would be, the gravity actuated switch assumes a first state. When the computer is operated in a vertical orientation such as a typical desk side workstation would be, the gravity actuated switch assumes a second state. When the switch is in the first state, fan speed controller circuitry runs the fan at a first speed. When the switch is in the second state, fan speed controller circuitry runs the fan at a second speed. In one embodiment, the first speed is a higher speed intended to optimize reliability, and the second speed is a lower speed intended to minimize noise.

  • Patent number: 6798646
Abstract: A rotary axle structure for portable computers mainly includes a member with an indented notch formed on the surface thereof and a sloped element with an elevation higher than the surface of the indented notch. The display device of a portable computer has a pivotal shalt located on the surface of the member. When the display device is lifted and turned about the first axis, the pivotal shaft may be lowered in the indented notch or be lifted to the sloped element to alter the distance between a leaning element in the first axis and the main body so that the display device may be lifted and moved away from the main body. Thus the display device may be swiveled without scraping the computer main body or the bottom of the display device.

  • Patent number: 6795309
Abstract: A peripheral mounting system for installing, removing and replacing peripheral devices from a chassis without the use of tools. A pair of side brackets secured to the chassis provide slots into which fasteners connected to the side of the peripheral device are installed to restrain the peripheral device. In an embodiment, clips protruding outward from the side of the slots allow the fasteners to slide into position while also retaining the peripheral device in the installed position. The pair of side brackets in conjunction with the fasteners on the peripheral device provide a means for mounting the peripheral device without requiring additional area above or below the peripheral device. A cover latching mechanism may securely latch the cover closed and provides additional retention of the peripheral device in the vertical direction.

  • Patent number: 6788531
Abstract: A panel mounting apparatus includes a chassis (10) and a panel (20). The chassis includes a front wall (11) defining two symmetrical arcuate slots (15). Two cutouts (17) are defined in the front wall at ends of the slots respectively. Two through holes (19) are defined in the front wall adjacent the slots respectively. The panel includes two posts (21) and two pins (25), respectively corresponding to the slots and the through holes of the front wall. Each post comprises a hook (23) at an end thereof. The posts are extended through the cutouts. The panel is then rotated so that the posts slide along the slots. The pins snappingly engage in the through holes of the front wall, and the hooks of the posts engage with the front wall at ends of the slots. The panel is thereby securely mounted to the front wall of the chassis.

  • Patent number: 6785136
Abstract: A coupling mechanism for radiator aims to fasten a radiator to a heat generating element of a socket on a main board for absorbing the thermal energy generated by the heat generating element. The coupling mechanism includes a first anchor dock, a second anchor dock and a latch element. The first anchor dock and the second anchor dock are located on two opposite ends of the socket. The latch element passes through the gap of the radiation fins of the radiator and straddles the radiator. It has one end pivotally engaging with the first anchor dock and another end selectively engaging with the second anchor dock. The latch element further has an elastic section formed in the middle portion to put the radiator in close contact with the heat generating element. The coupling mechanism thus constructed can increase the surface area of the radiation fins of the radiator to achieve the maximum radiation effect.

  • Patent number: 6781837
Abstract: A heat sink retention system and method secures a heat sink proximate to a packaged electronic component, such as central processing unit, by rotationally engaging the heat sink with a retaining structure secured to an information handling system planar, such as a motherboard. The retaining structure has an opening aligned with the packaged electronic component and securing lips that extend into the opening. The heat sink inserts into the opening and is rotated slightly to engage flanges extending from its base into the securing lips. The position of the securing lips relative to the planar and the thickness of the flanges results in the base of the secured heat sink having a predetermined clearance from the packaged electronic component. A locking detent biases the heat sink to contact the packaged electronic component and allows limited movement out to the predetermined clearance, thus allowing the absorption of shock without excessive heat sink movement.

  • Patent number: 6778390
Abstract: An apparatus and method are described for cooling electronic components on a plug-in or other computer board placed within an enclosure. The inventive apparatus and system is capable of cooling a high power dissipating device, such as a Graphics Processing Unit and cooling individual ones of a plurality of other devices, such as memory chips, to within a specified temperature range. In one embodiment, cooling air is drawn from the edge of a plug-in card, over the GPU and is directed along and over arrays of memory chips. By directing the flow on and along the memory chips, a flow is established that maintains the chip-to-chip temperature difference to within a desired, uniform range. The invention allows for the incorporation of higher performance processors onto boards while maintaining memory chips within a temperature range that allows for predictable performance.
