Patent number: 6340533Abstract: A synthetic-type spin-valve MR sensor having a pinned magnetic layer with a multi-layer film structure. In one embodiment, on a substrate are formed by layering a free magnetic layer, a pinned magnetic layer including first and second ferromagnetic films, which are mutually coupled antiferromagnetically and which enclose a nonmagnetic coupling film. A nonmagnetic conductive layer is enclosed between these two magnetic layers. An antiferromagnetic layer neighbors the pinned magnetic layer. The first ferromagnetic film neighboring the antiferromagnetic layer is formed from a high-resistivity Co-base material. By making the products of the saturation magnetization and the film thickness of the first ferromagnetic layer and the second ferromagnetic layer substantially equal, the apparent magnetic moment of the pinned magnetic layer as a whole is zero, and the magnetostatic action on the free magnetic layer is eliminated or reduced.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 1999Date of Patent: January 22, 2002Assignee: Read-Rite CorporationInventors: Masaki Ueno, Hideyasu Nagai, Tatsuo Sawasaki, Fuminori Hikami

Patent number: 6274252Abstract: A hermetic glass-to-metal seal between a conductive pin and an outer body, wherein a corrosion-resistant noble metal (e.g., gold) coating is applied to the conductive pin before the hermetic seal is formed. The noble metal-coated conductive pin is located in glass having a softening point less than about 650° C. and disposed in a cavity of the outer body. This is accomplished by inserting the coated conductive pin into a bore in a glass preform, heating the assembly to a temperature in excess of the softening point of the glass but less than about 700° C., and cooling the assembly. The coefficients of thermal expansion of the components of the assembly are preferably selected such that the resulting assembly is a hermetic compression seal.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 1997Date of Patent: August 14, 2001Assignee: Coors Ceramics CompanyInventors: Robert E. Patent number: 6245443Abstract: A bond for a metal single layer abrasive tool can be easily chemically and electrochemically stripped from the metal core of a recovered used tool to facilitate reuse of the core. Relative to conventionally bonded tools, the speed of stripping the novel bond is quick, and the stripped core has a smooth, clean surface which needs only minimal mechanical repair prior to reuse. The composition of the novel bond consists essentially of copper, tin and titanium. It can be brazed at temperatures below diamond graphitization and is chemically compatible with diamond. Hence, the bond is particularly useful for the manufacture of large diameter, superabrasive metal single layer abrasive wheels employed in the construction industry. The bond can be applied to the cutting surface of the abrasive tool as a uniform mixture of bronze alloy, titanium compound and copper powders. The powders may be mixed with a liquid vehicle and applied as a paste.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 1996Date of Patent: June 12, 2001Assignee: Norton CompanyInventors: Ren-Kae Shiue, Thomas W.
