  • Patent number: 4286447
Abstract: Method and apparatus are disclosed for controlling the final output gauge of strip material passing through a tandem rolling mill in which the final reduction in gauge is substantially accomplished at the next to the last stand. An automatic gauge control (AGC) loop responsive to the changes in speed of the next to the last stand, controls the speed regulators for the last two stands. Responsive to the next to the last stand speed, the AGC loop provides a variable gain at low and high mill speeds respectively to appropriately adjust the control signals to the speed regulators for the last two stands. Interstand tension control between the last two stands is provided by modification of the speed regulator for the last stand.

  • Patent number: 4286448
Abstract: The invention relates to a control system for setting the crown and/or steer on the rolls of a cluster mill such that the adjustment collars are all driven together but substantially in the desired final ratio to one another throughout the movement. The control system derives a separate control signal for driving each eccentric collar. The circuits for deriving the control signals include means for deriving from crown and steer magnitude signals, a series of crown and steer datum signals, one for each collar, which are proportional to the respective magnitude signals in selected ratios, the crown ratios being preselectable by a selection means and means for progressively increasing the magnitude signals from zero to the desired value.

  • Patent number: 4285227
Abstract: In an apparatus for manufacturing a taper leaf spring, by which after performing rolling on the edges of a sheet spring material in the direction of its breadth, rolling for tapering the sheet in the direction of its thickness is carried out, an edge roll assembly is employed for the sake of rolling in the breadth direction. In the edge roll assembly, constraining flanges for regulating the sheet thickness are provided on both ends of the main body of the edge roll so that expansion of both sides of a sheet spring material in the sheet thickness direction due to the effect of rolling in the sheet breadth direction is suppressed by the flanges and the thickness of a sheet spring material is kept uniform as a whole prior to performing rolling in the sheet thickness direction.

  • Patent number: 4283834
Abstract: The invention is an apparatus and method for aligning a very fine wire relative to a workpiece. It comprises an alignment fixture supporting a pair of spaced-apart lead screws for receiving the wire in the threads thereof. The wire is affixed to spacer arms oppositely protruding from the fixture and spans the spacing between the screws. The workpiece is supported between the spacer arms and may be raised or lowered to provide alignment with the wire which is then translated or oriented by turning either or both of the lead screws until the relative alignment is achieved. The wire is affixed to each of the arms in a slackened condition and a tiny weight is suspended from the wire for yieldably tensioning the same across the threads, but providing for translation without fracture.

  • Patent number: 4280350
Abstract: A system for automatically bending wire into arcuate segments of different selected configurations utilizing a wire bending roll displaceable selectively by a stepping motor which is controlled by a microprocessor to bend a length of wire conforming to data retrieved from a computer. The wire is selectively advanced to a shear assembly where it is severed to a specific length and advanced through feed rolls towards the bending roll. Detection of the advancing severed length of wire locks in a strobe gear and the microprocessor with the stepping motor to determine the position of the wire with respect to the bending roll and to incrementally displace the bending roll in a controlled manner along an arcuate path to produce the desired bend in the wire.

  • Patent number: 4275580
Abstract: It is desirable for a pair of horizontal roll assemblies of a rolling mill to be withdrawn from the mill simultaneously with the longitudinal axes of the rolls parallel and substantially horizontal. If material is present in the mill there can be no connection between the bearing chocks on the drive side of the mill. When the roll assemblies have been withdrawn from the mill, a support vehicle is positioned relative to the roll assemblies so that the rolls can be supported on upper and lower support surfaces provided on the vehicle. The vehicle is the displaced away from the withdrawal position of the rolls so that replacement rolls carried on a similar support vehicle can be moved to a position from which they can be inserted into the mill.

  • Patent number: 4275592
Abstract: Disclosed is a holder which may be used for mounting equipment, such as sensing apparatus, within an otherwise closed environment, and an extractor tool for inserting and retrieving the holder and attached equipment. In an operating configuration the holder is double-sealed to a landing nipple mounted on the container against communication of high pressure fluid out of the container. With the extractor tool mounted and sealed on the landing nipple also, a placement member within the extractor tool may engage the top of the holder to extract the holder from sealing engagement with the landing nipple. Two independent gear boxes are provided whereby translational and rotational motions may be separately imparted to the placement member. The holder is anchored to the landing nipple by threaded engagement between the landing nipple and a drive screw section of the holder. A separate seal section of the holder is rotated during the insertion procedure until a preselected orientation of the seal section is achieved.
