Abstract: An asynchronous timing detector 3 detects and measures a specific pattern (sync pattern) of audio and video reproduced signals having a digital value form an A/D converter 2 and its appearance interval based on an asynchronous clock generated by an asynchronous clock generator 4, and calculates a cycle ratio of the measured sync pattern appearance interval (the number of clock pulses of the asynchronous clock) to a normal value (the number of clock pulses of a synchronous clock obtained by measuring a sync pattern appearance interval using the synchronous clock). A pseudo-synchronous clock generator 7 thins the asynchronous clock based on the cycle ratio to generate a pseudo-synchronous clock which is pseudo-synchronous with channel data. Therefore, even when an initial frequency error is large, frequency and phase pull-in is relatively quickly performed until a timing recovery operation becomes stable.
Abstract: A docking assembly serves as an interface between (1) a portable digital media storage and playback (PDMSP) device, and (2) a media reproduction system. A remote controller preferably controls the docking assembly and PDMSP device, which may receive electric charge from the assembly. Media reproduction systems may reproduce audio and video signals in user-perceptible form. Telephonic relay capability is further provided between a telephonic PDMSP playback device and a telephonic remote controller by way of a telephone rebroadcast receiver associated with the docking assembly. Methods for downloading digital media files, and for creating or modifying playlists with a remotely controllable docking assembly adapted to provide a television-compatible video output signal, are further provided.

Abstract: The present invention is a method and apparatus for multitrack recording of audio information using handheld digital electronic devices such as suitably equipped portable digital music players. Recording of video tracks by digital electronic devices to complement the audio is also contemplated. One device serves as a master; the remainder are slaves. A key aspect of the invention is the transmission of start and stop recording signals by the master, which facilitates synchronization of the various tracks. In certain embodiments of the invention, some slaves may begin preliminary sampling of audio information prior to the start recording signal. This prepares these slaves to begin the actual track recording without delay. Upon receiving the command to start recording, each slave chooses as the first frame of its, say, audio track that sample closest to the time the signal to record was received. The task of stopping recording is typically handled similarly.
Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed which reduces or removes the effectiveness of commercial skip systems such as presently found in VCRs, PVRs, etc. which are designed to delete commercials from signal material upon playback of a previously recorded version of the signal material. In an embodiment, the effectiveness of the commercial skip system is reduced or removed by adding a flat field of selected signal level to active line portions of video lines of the signal material. Other embodiments modify the normal fade to black signal indicative of a commercial to provide a fade to non-black signal. In further embodiments, a fade to non-black signal is inserted in an overscan area of the signal picture. Still further embodiments modify audio signals or selected signals in the horizontal blanking interval which may be used in commercial skip systems to detect the presence of commercials.
Abstract: When the number of requests for recording is more than the number of tuners by the extension of a broadcast time period of a program that has been timer-recorded as a reserved program, recording instruction information relating to the reserved program that is extended is transmitted to a mobile communication device from an information transmitter in a digital broadcasting receiver. In this case, the recording of the reserved program that is extended is started in the mobile communication device, and another reserved program is recorded by a program recorder in the digital broadcasting receiver. Further, when the number of requests for recording is more than the number of tuners by timer-recording other program or programs within the broadcast time period of the reserved program, recording instruction information relating to the one reserved program is transmitted to the mobile communication device from an information transmitter in the digital broadcasting receiver.
Abstract: Lossless video data compression is performed in real time at the data rate of incoming real time video data in a process employing a minimum number of computational steps for each video pixel. A first step is to convert each pixel 8-bit byte to a difference byte representing the difference between the pixel and its immediate predecessor in a serialized stream of the pixel bytes. Thus, each 8-bit pixel byte is subtracted from its predecessor. This step reduces the dynamic range of the data. A next step is to discard any carry bits generated in the subtraction process of two's complement arithmetic. This reduces the data by a factor of two. Finally, the 8-bit difference pixel bytes thus produced are subject to a maximum entropy encoding process. Such a maximum entropy encoding process may be referred to as a minimum length encoding process. One example is Huffman encoding.
Abstract: The invention enables the apparent display rate of an audiovisual display to be varied. The invention can modify an original set of audio data in accordance with a target display rate, then modify a related original set of video data to conform to the modifications made to the audio data set, such that the modified audio and video data sets are synchronized. When the modified audio and video data sets so produced are used to generate an audiovisual display, the audiovisual display has an apparent display rate that approximates the target display rate. The target display rate can be faster or slower than a normal display rate at which an audiovisual display system generates an audiovisual display from the original sets of audio and video data. The target display rate can be established solely by a user instruction, by analysis of the audiovisual data, or by modification of a user-specified nominal target display rate based upon analysis of the audiovisual data.

Abstract: An AV Clip generated by multiplexing video and graphics streams is recorded on a BD-ROM. The graphics stream includes a plurality of DSs (Display Sets) which are each a group of segments used for graphics display. ODSs (Object Definition segments) belonging to a DS include a referenced ODS and a non-referenced ODS. The non-referenced ODS is an ODS that is not referenced by a PCS (Presentation Composition Segment) included in the display set. An END segment is provided immediately following a last ODS of the sequence of the referenced ODS and the non-referenced ODS in the display set.
Abstract: A system for utilizing metadata created either at a central location for shared use by connected users, or at each individual user's location, to enhance user's enjoyment of available broadcast programming content. A variety of mechanisms are employed for automatically and manually identifying and designating programming segments, associating descriptive metadata which the identified segments, distributing the metadata for use at client locations, and using the supplied metadata to selectively record and playback desired programming.

Abstract: An information storage medium storing subtitle text-based information, and a method and apparatus utilizing same, process a subtitle The information storage medium includes: dialog information which contains script text information of the subtitle and information specifying an output type of the script text; and presentation information which contains style information used to convert the script text into a bitmap format through rendering. With this structure, the amount of data required for a subtitle and the amount of data that should be processed when a subtitle is output may be greatly reduced.
Abstract: At least one of a recorded image signal data, recorded audio signal data, and recorded image signal multiplex data, and reproduction information data describing the information about reproduction of at least one of the recorded image signal data, the recorded audio signal data, and the recorded image signal multiplex data or an arbitrary combination thereof, are stored. In this reproduction information data, the user can describe and edit by freely and easily combining the image data, audio data, and image/audio multiplex data. The CPU reads out image data and audio data from the storage means according to the reproduction information data, and decodes them, and converts the data format if necessary, and reproduces the image and audio in synchronism by using synchronization control means.

Abstract: One or more methods and systems to efficiently process MPEG video in order to perform a reverse play or slow rewind function are presented. The method reduces system bandwidth required to implement the reverse play function when SD MPEG video is received by the MPEG decoder. Furthermore, the method maximizes the use of memory resources when one or more video frame buffers are implemented. The system comprises a first subsystem feeding one or more sequences of frames (e.g., feeding sessions) to a second subsystem. The first subsystem defines a set of parameters that is used to determine the one or more feeding sessions provided to the second subsystem. The second subsystem subsequently decodes the one or more feeding sessions using the set of parameters such that the video may be displayed.
