  • Patent number: 6878425
Abstract: The present invention 10 discloses a polarized filter film having a plurality of light-filtering layers 20, 22, 24, each having a different polarization aperture and tint hue that can be selectively combined to form a polarized filter film having a combined opacity rating of 5% to 55% when applied to a transparent medium 18 such as a window. The combined polarized filter film 10 is comprised of a plurality of layers 20, 22, 24 of light-filtering material wherein each layer has a plurality of apertures 26, 28 positioned either vertically 36 or angularly 38 so that the horizontal rays associated with glare are reduced dramatically. Each layer of film has a plurality of slotted apertures 36, 38 that is biased or offset from the overlaying light-filtering film apertures whereby varying degrees of light-blocking properties can be achieved by using the light-filtering films in conjunction with additional layers.

  • Patent number: 6872433
Abstract: Micro-electromechanical tools for minimally invasive techniques including microsurgery. These tools utilize composite shape memory alloy (SMA), shape memory polymer (SMP) and combinations of SMA and SMP to produce catheter distal tips, actuators, etc., which are bistable. Applications for these structures include: 1) a method for reversible fine positioning of a catheter tip, 2) a method for reversible fine positioning of tools or therapeutic catheters by a guide catheter, 3) a method for bending articulation through the body's vasculature, 4) methods for controlled stent delivery, deployment, and repositioning, and 5) catheters with variable modulus, with vibration mode, with inchworm capability, and with articulated tips. These actuators and catheter tips are bistable and are opportune for in vivo usage because the materials are biocompatible and convenient for intravascular use as well as other minimal by invasive techniques.

  • Patent number: 6849149
Abstract: There are provided a hologram laminate and a hologram label which do not involve any problem in the production process per se of forging preventive labels using a volume hologram, can provide a reliable process of the attainment of forgery preventive effect, and can make difficult to notice the signs of the forgery preventive processing. In applying a protective film 108 onto a hologram 107 through a second pressure-sensitive adhesive 109, the adhesive strength is partially varied. By virtue of this construction, upon separation of the protective film 108, the second pressure-sensitive adhesive 109 is partially left on the hologram 107, so that the fact of the separation can be found out.

  • Patent number: 6846537
Abstract: An article and method for reinforcing structural members is provided. The article comprises a carbon fiber material, preferably a carbon fiber mesh with a roughened surface defined by an epoxy resin. The article has lateral fibers woven into longitudinal carbon fibers that are in tension, creating a mesh. An epoxy resin is applied to the fiber mesh to form a rigidified fiber mesh tape once the resin is cured. To obtain a roughened surface a plastic sheet is removably attached to the surface of the fiber mesh. The plastic sheet is removed thereby exposing a roughened carbon fiber surface defined by the epoxy. The rigidified fiber mesh tape is adhered to the structural member by applying a second epoxy to the structural member. The roughened surface of the rigidified carbon fiber mesh material is then joined to the second epoxy resin. To firmly adhere the fiber mesh to the structural member an impermeable material and a plastic barrier are placed above the article and the structural member.

  • Patent number: 6844039
Abstract: The invention describes elastane packages on cylindrical tubes which are provided with a finishing oil content varying over the filament length, and a method for the production thereof. Instead of being applied uniformly along the filament, the finishing oil is distinctly increased on the outermost part, constituting in particular at least 3%, of the filament wound onto the tubes such that the oil coat in this region is at least 1.2 times higher than in the remaining region of the package. This gives rise to a finishing coat gradient of the package from the outside (high) inwards (low).

  • Patent number: 6844041
Abstract: A clear polymeric label including a delaminatable mask layer is provided. The label includes a non-cavitated mask layer having a first side that is suitable for forming a cohesive bond with an adhesive, preferably a water-based adhesive. The cohesive bond between the first side of the mask layer and the adhesive is grater than the cohesive bond between the second side of the mask layer and its adjacent layer, whereby attempted removal of the label results in separation of the mask layer, which remains attached to the container, and masks the adhesive.

  • Patent number: 6830795
Abstract: A linerless label is provided, that can be easily imaged, printed, or hand written upon by the end user. The label consists of a single ply, dispensed usually in a roll form, or alternatively, in a stacked form. A label roll is formed from a web of ply. The face of the web is stripe coated with an adhesive repellant release coat. The back of the web of ply is stripe coated with adhesive. Upon winding the web of ply into a roll, the adhesive on the back of the web of ply overlies the adhesive repellant stripes on the face of the web therebelow. The regions of the face of the web of ply not striped with adhesive repellant form areas for user printing and handwriting. Further, any portion of the face of the web of ply may be press printed prior to the application of the adhesive repellant stripes. Likewise, a label stack includes a plurality of label sheets superposed one on top the other.
