  • Patent number: 6412832
Abstract: The self-flaring plastic fitting is generally utilized in coupling one section of tubing to another section of tubing. In the present invention, at least one of the sections of tubing has an end portion with a substantially uniform diameter and a groove about its periphery. The fitting itself includes a fitting body and a fitting nut. The fitting body is provided with a tapered nose section while the fitting nut is provided with a groove engaging device. In assembling the fitting, the end of the section of tubing incorporating the groove is place proximate the tapered nose section of the fitting body while the opposite end of the section of tubing is inserted through the fitting nut. The fitting nut is then pushed towards the fitting body where the groove engaging device of the fitting nut engages the groove of the tubing.

  • Patent number: 6409222
Abstract: The torque confirmation fitting is used for coupling one section of tubing to another and includes a fitting body, a fitting nut, and a torque confirmation portion. The fitting body has a nose section that supports an end of one of the sections of tubing. The torque confirmation portion has a collar portion and one or more prongs. The fitting nut is operably joinable to the fitting body and engageable with the torque confirmation portion. To operate, the non-supported end of the tubing is inserted through the torque confirmation portion and the fitting nut. The fitting nut is then joined to the fitting body and in doing so engages the torque confirmation portion. The continued joining of the fitting nut to the fitting body causes the prong of the torque confirmation portion to provide a visual indication that the fitting nut has been sufficiently, tightly joined to the fitting body.

  • Patent number: 6409224
Abstract: A fastening means (7) is proposed for bushings of all types on housings (1), in particular plastic housings, on which at least two bushings (2a, 2b) are formed on in the form of short, hollow-cylindrical projections, which permit accesses into the housing interior and on which various lines, such as supply lines and/or signal lines and the like for an item of equipment located in the housing (1), are fastened by means of adapters (5a, 5b) fastened there. The fastening means (7) comprises a sheet-like base plate (8) in which openings are provided, the inner surfaces of which are shaped in such a way that the base plate (8) fits on all the adapters (5a, 5b) and in this way connects them to one another and braces them against one another. This achieves the effect that, when screwing in and tightening cable connections or connections of other lines into the adapters (5), overstressing of the connection of the adapters (5a, 5b) to the housing (1) is avoided.

  • Patent number: 6409443
Abstract: This invention relates to a fastener, which expands by the insertion of an expanding member, preferably a screw. The fastener comprises a substantially flat head and two expandable legs. The head has an upper side and a lower side, preferably separated by a gap. The head also has a hole (round, oblong or otherwise shaped) in which the expanding body may engage or pass through for expanding the legs and securing one object to another object, such as a plastic panel to a metal sheet. The fastener also comprises a Y-shaped funnel configuration, which has been formed by a partial cut of the legs. Miscellaneous configurations of the Y shaped legs provide improved guidance to the expanding member, improved engagement to at least one of the objects, such as the metal sheet for example, and improved engagement to the expanding member, among other advantages. The fastener may also comprise portions under the upper side of the head, which portions are engageable to the expanding member.

  • Patent number: 6406243
Abstract: An attachment implement, for use in connection with the mounting of a relatively thin, highly dense insulation panel upon an underlying structural substrate, comprises a washer plate portion and an integral lower body portion which has a substantially inverted dome-shaped or bell-shaped configuration. The axial depth dimension of the implement is relatively shallow or small, and the inverted dome-shaped or bell-shaped configuration advantageously distributes or disperses the compressive forces attendant the mounting of the insulation panel upon the underlying structural substrate whereby desired compression of the insulation panel, and its rigidifying or strength-enhancing membrane, occurs without tearing or cutting of the insulation panel and its membrane so as not to adversely affect the strength, rigidity, and structural integrity of the insulation panel.

  • Patent number: 6406236
Abstract: A fastener for connecting a first panel to a second panel comprises a head and a shaft, the shaft including a plurality of spring legs, each connected at one end to the head and flexing inward and outward relative to the one end. The shaft is dimensioned for insertion into an aperture of the second panel with interference against aperture-defining edges. A plurality of grooves are formed within each spring leg, each groove separated from an adjacent groove by a rib. The rib is configured having a ramped leading surface, a stepped trailing surface and a peak surface disposed between the leading and trailing surfaces. The grooves of one spring leg are axially misaligned with the corresponding grooves of an adjacent spring leg such that each spring leg alternately locks its grooves to the aperture-defining edges of the second panel as the shaft is inserted into the aperture. The head of the fastener can be modified to connect with the first panel in multitude of alternative configurations.

  • Patent number: 6406234
Abstract: The present invention relates to an orthopedic fastener for fixing an implant, suture, or tissue to a bone. The fastener comprises a blind rivet and a closing element. The blind rivet includes a head at a proximal end, a shank connected to the head, and an anchoring portion near a distal end. A bore extends through the head and shank from the proximal end to the distal end and the bore has a polygonal cross-section through the anchoring portion. The closing element has a body with an outer surface and is configured and dimensioned to be received in the anchoring portion. The outer surface of at least a portion of the closing element distal end has a polygonal cross-section flaring along the longitudinal axis toward the closing element distal end. The anchoring portion of the blind rivet severs into a plurality of anchoring legs when the closing element is pulled in the bore toward the blind rivet proximal end to thereby prevent rotation of the fastener.

  • Patent number: 6406237
Abstract: The fastener of the fastener and panel assembly includes a body portion received in a panel opening and a tubular barrel having a free end extending radially inwardly and a midportion bowed outwardly having a diameter greater than the panel opening. The body portion has an outside diameter greater than the inside diameter of the panel opening to form an interference fit providing torque resistance and preventing push-through of the fastener. The method of installing a fastener includes inserting the fastener body portion into the panel opening with the barrel received in a first die member and the body portion supported in the panel opening by a second die member. The end of the barrel is deformed radially inwardly and toward the body portion by the first die member and the midportion of the barrel is deformed radially outwardly preventing withdrawal of the fastener element from the panel.

  • Patent number: 6406233
Abstract: An anchor for attaching objects to a metal stud having a stud wall with inner and outer faces. The anchor has a cylindrical body having an inner end that is conical and an opening at its mid-portion. A plurality of fins extend from the anchor body adjacent the outer end, adapted to abut the outer face of a metal stud. A threaded bore extends along the longitudinal axis of the anchor body. A stud wedge is attached at its inner end to the anchor body by hinge means. The hinge means allow the stud wedge to be depressed into the opening during insertion of the anchor through a hole drilled through the wall of a metal stud, but forces the stud wedge upwardly after insertion of the anchor through the stud to lock the back side of the wedge against the inner face of the stud.

  • Patent number: 6394724
Abstract: A panel fastener includes a metallic screw insert with an overmolded plastic cap. The screw insert is preferably manufactured by means of cold forming process which allows fabrication of the internal drive recesses and dog point ends for easy location of the mating threads while providing increased thread strength. The plastic cap is in the form of a knob which has large flutes on its outer diameter for ergonomic finger operation. In addition the knob may have a slot molded into its top to allow screwdriver or coin operation. The metallic insert may also be accessed by a drive through a central cavity in the knob. Assembly of the screw to the ferrule is achieved by passing the screw threads through the ferrule body which includes an internal annular retaining ring. The ring is very narrow and dimensioned to allow the screw to be easily pressed through the annular opening since the ring elastically expands as the thread portion of the screw passes through it.
