  • Patent number: 6585468
Abstract: A captivated fastener assembly is provided along with a technique for captivating a fastener in a workpiece. The assembly includes a fastener having a head, a shank extending from said head that has an upper unthreaded shank portion and a lower threaded shank portion, wherein the diameter of the outer tips of the threads of the lower threaded shank portion exceed the diameter of the upper unthreaded shank portion. The assembly further includes a workpiece having a sleeve with an internal bore with a diameter slightly larger than the diameter of the fastener shank so that the sleeve can be received over the shank. The sleeve also includes segments that deform inwardly in response to a predetermined compressive force, thereby forming a plurality of deformed segments that protrude inwardly. Thus, the plurality of deformed segments provide an inner diameter that is less than the diameter of the outer tips of the threads of the lower threaded shank portion, thereby holding the fastener captive.

  • Patent number: 6585469
Abstract: An automatic, self-energized, length extending, take-up unit for general use in wall hold down systems. The take-up unit is generally installed as a separate element, independent of threaded retaining elements of a hold down system. One embodiment includes an internal, preloaded, coil spring to rotate a threaded sliding member relative to a threaded base member, thereby to extend a height of the take-up unit. A trigger mechanism may be included to prevent unintended actuation of the unit. Additionally, a safety mechanism may be included to prevent inadvertent separation of a base member and a sliding member, thereby to prevent loss of a preload in an energizing spring.

  • Patent number: 6579050
Abstract: A nut assembly is proposed for fastening an instrument or the like to a member, the back of which is not accessible. A nut assembly comprises a pivotable nut having a threaded through-hole and a pin on each side thereof, and a frame having a flange portion formed with a bolt hole and an opposed pair of arms extending from both sides of the flange portion. The arms are each formed with an elongated hole, and the nut is formed at one end thereof with an inclined guide surface for pivoting the nut when pushed by a bolt. The nut is pivotably and slidably mounted between the arms with the pins received in the elongated holes formed in the arms. The arms have free end portions bent inwardly at an angle. With this arrangement, it is possible to prevent the nut from coming off the arms.

  • Patent number: 6572316
Abstract: A screw with a thin head comprising a screw head (2) and a shank (4), and with its top (5) forming a circular arc of a large radius has an unthreaded part (20) tapered down between the bearing surface (6) and the thread (3) and has a radius (21) connected to the thread portion (3), and therefore it will be readily produced to be used for compact products and correspond with thin products. And the radius (21) is connected to the unthreaded part (20) of the shank on one hand and to the screw ridge (3) on the other, preventing stress concentration at this part from occurring at time of fastening and a long time after the fastening of the screw, so ensuring a fastening strength, without causing a fatigue fracture. And further, when heating and plating treatments have been given to the screw, as the top of the screw head is not flat, there is no possibility of the heads of the screws being stacked to each other in the course of mass production, ensuring stable heat and plating treatments.

  • Patent number: 6572317
Abstract: A fastener has a head for retaining a vehicle component and a leg to be fitted into a mounting hole of a panel. The leg has a plurality of resilient engaging walls extending in the axis direction with a plurality of vertical slits interposed therebetween. Upper ends of the walls are connected to the head and lower ends of the walls are connected to one another. Each upper end connected to the head is provided with a lateral cut. The presence of the cut makes the wall to easily flex inwardly when the leg is inserted into the mounting hole of the panel, enabling the insertion of the leg with smaller force, resulting in significant improvement in workability.

  • Patent number: 6558094
Abstract: The invention relates to a plug (10) for fastening to hollow or panel-type building materials and to solid building materials. The invention proposes providing the plug (10) with expansion limbs (18) that extend longitudinally and that are connected to one another by thin skins (22) having a corrugation in the peripheral direction. That has the advantage of good screw guidance and a torsionally rigid construction of the plug (10); especially when fastening to hollow and panel-type building materials, undesirable backwards rotation of the plug tip (16) is avoided when screwing in an expansion screw by hand. Angled slits (32) in the plug tip (16) bring about good adaptation to screws having different diameters and different pitches of thread.

  • Patent number: 6558096
Abstract: The present invention permits a screw or male member to align prior to entering a threaded section and being driven. This alignment can avoid cross threading of the screw and the internal threads as often happens with power driven screws. The present invention generally includes a device with an unthreaded section and a threaded section. A screw or male member passes through the unthreaded section prior to entering the threaded section and causes the screw or male member to be aligned before being driven.

  • Patent number: 6558095
Abstract: A nut locking clip assembly holds a nut in a desired orientation. The clip assembly has a first member or arm secured to a structure. A second arm is secured to the first arm through a spring portion. The first member defines a hole whereas the second member defines a longitudinal opening. The longitudinal opening has two edges define a width that is slightly wider than the width of the nut head. When the nut is threaded into the structure through the hole in the first member, it is oriented to allow the second member to slide over the nut. The edges of the longitudinal opening or slot prevent the edges of the nut from rotating. To remove the nut, the second member is forced back toward the first member allowing the nut to rotate.

  • Patent number: 6554553
Abstract: The invention provides an improved Winged Fastener in which a large threaded nut is movably engaged with the threaded sleeve of the Winged Fastener wherein the nut is movable set in a washer such that the washer is placed against a surface, while the sleeve of the winged bolt is placed in a bore in a first matrix and a second matrix is set around the sleeve of the Winged Bolt. As the nut is turned on the threaded sleeve, the second matrix which is placed around the threaded sleeve is caused to be compressed and radially moved outward toward an inner surface of the first matrix. If the second matrix is of a rigid material, the cylinder of matrix is split longitudinally and the pieces are driven radially outward. The invention also provides a second improved Winged Fastener in which a hole is placed in a wing and a cable or tendon is attached to the wing through the hole.

  • Patent number: 6551040
Abstract: A two piece blind fastener for securing a plurality of workpieces including a hollow sleeve having an enlarged sleeve head at one end and a pin having an enlarged shear ring at the end opposite the sleeve head followed by an elongated retention portion of reduced diameter. The shear ring is adapted to engage and move inside the sleeve to form a tuliped shaped blind head in response to a relative axial force applied between the pin and sleeve and to shear off proximate to the inner or blind sheet line of the workpieces. The retention portion is then moved with the pin shank into the shear ring and with the shear ring finally located at a position on the retention portion depending upon the overall thickness of the workpieces. This provides a clamp and lock section between the pin and sleeve at the inner or blind side of the workpieces. The pin and sleeve have a lock structure actuated after final formation of the clamp and lock section to provide a lock between the pin and sleeve.
