Abstract: A matrix addressed flat panel display, is disclosed herein and includes a lower planar array of spaced apart, parallel, electrically conductive leads and a matrix array of field emission cathodes connected to and extending up from the lower planar array of electrically conductive leads. An upper matrix array of spaced-apart parallel electrically conductive leads is located above and spaced from the lower array of leads and from the cathodes, such that the upper leads extend normal to the lower leads, crossing the latter immediately above the cathodes, and such that those segments of the upper leads that actually cross over the lower leads are positioned in a plane closer to the lower leads than the rest of the upper leads. The upper and lower planar arrays of leads are electrically insulated from one another by means of a pair of separately formed layers of dielectric material disposed therebetween.

  • Patent number: 5072152
Abstract: A TFEL device for producing a high brightness output comprises a substrate supporting a laminar thin film stack including a front electrode layer and a rear electrode layer sandwiching an electroluminescent laminate comprising an electroluminescent layer sandwiched by a pair of insulating layers. A thin film insulating layer is grown by evaporation on the glass substrate and produces a surface having a degree of roughness which is replicated by the remaining thin film layers. The surface contour at the interfaces between each of the thin film layers is convoluted which reduces internal light reflection and provides more light output at the front of the panel.

  • Patent number: 5070330
Abstract: A keyboard (2) has two transverse arrays of conductors (R0-R13, C0-C7) defining a number of rows and columns of cross-points at each of which a key is positioned whereby depression of a key causes the conductors at the corresponding cross-points to be electrically connected. A scanning device (1) connected to each of the conductors and adapted during a scanning operation to apply a high or low potential to all the conductors of the two arrays and subsequently sequentially to apply a potential of the opposite type to each conductor of one array and to monitor the potential of the conductors of the other array such that if the potential of a conductor of the other array changes, this indicates that the key at the corresponding cross-point is depressed.

  • Patent number: 5065070
Abstract: A low work function surface for a dispenser cathode structure. The cathode structure comprising a heater and an electron emitting surface substrate or core composed of a porous tungsten matrix impregnated with a barium containing impregnant distributed therethrough. The structure is made by a method in which a nanometer thick layer of scandium oxide is sputtered onto the outermost surface of the impregnated tungsten core, or substrate, and then oxidized by exposing the sputtered scandium oxide surface layer to an oxygen atmosphere. The oxidized surface layer is activated by turning on the heater, for example, to cause the release of a small portion of the barium in the barium-containing impregnant. Some of the released barium migrates into the scandium oxide surface layer to form a monolayer of barium oxide on at least a portion thereof.

  • Patent number: 5065069
Abstract: A metal halide arc discharge lamp includes an arc tube and a light-transmissive shroud mounted within a lamp envelope. The arc tube and the shroud are mechanically attached to a frame. The frame is mechanically supported within the lamp envelope by resilient spring members. Since the frame is mechanically and electrically isolated from the lamp stem, leakage current between the frame and the electrical inleads is eliminated, thereby reducing sodium loss from the arc tube and extending the operating life of the lamp. The spring-mounted construction enables the lamp to withstand mechanical shock and vibration.

  • Patent number: 5057736
Abstract: A directly-heated cathode structure for use in a compact cathode ray tube comprises an insulating support body, a pair of cathode lead pins fixedly carried in the insulating support body, and a filament extending between the leading ends of said cathode lead pins. An electron emitting material is applied to and coated on the filament over its entire length including its two ends joining with the leading ends of the cathode lead pins so that the electron emitting material once hardened ensures that the two ends of the filament are firmly fixed to the leading ends of the cathode lead pins. The insulating support body may have a groove which is formed across the upper face thereof and within which the leading ends of the cathode lead pins are exposed in a spaced relation, which helps confining undesirable scattering of the electron emitting material when sprayed to the filament.
