  • Patent number: 5547663
Abstract: A process for preparing defined molecular weight polymers, particularly polyquaternary ammonium compounds, is disclosed. As the molecular weights of these compounds can be absolutely defined, rather than defined merely in terms of "number average molecular weight," these compounds are particularly useful as identification standards for other polymers which are made using conventional polymerization processes. The polyquaternary ammonium compounds described are further suitable for use as antimicrobial agents, particularly in ophthalmic compositions.

  • Patent number: 5540033
Abstract: A method for producing a sterile packaged adhesive hydrogel product by preparing an aqueous mixture of water, a polymer which can be cross-linked by radiation to form a hydrogel, and a cross-linking inhibitor in an amount sufficient to retard the cross-linking of the polymer when the mixture is exposed to radiation; providing the mixture in a predetermined shape or configuration representative of a hydrogel product; enclosing the shaped mixture in a sealed package; and subjecting the package to a dose of radiation sufficient to simultaneously cross-link and sterilize the mixture to provide a sterile packaged adhesive hydrogel product. The invention also is directed to the sterile packaged adhesive hydrogel product formed by this method, as well as the packaged product prior to sterilization.

  • Patent number: 5532279
Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, an ion-exchange composition has been formed which comprises synthetic resin support particles, dispersant capable of suspending the support particles in an aqueous medium to inhibit or prevent agglomeration, and fine synthetic resin layering particles. In a preferred embodiment, the complex can be formed by contacting a suitable dispersant with monomer in an aqueous solution in which the monomer is insoluble. Under suitable conditions for suspension polymerization, the monomer will polymerize to form resin support particles having dispersant irreversibly attached to those particles. The dispersant is irreversibly attached to the synthetic resin support particles, either by covalent bonding or permanent physical entanglement. The dispersant is also attached to the fine layering particles, either by covalent bonding or electrostatic forces. The result is formation of a support particle-dispersant-layering particle complex.

  • Patent number: 5529807
Abstract: A composition containing an antimicrobial and a silicone-based emulsion is disclosed for treating heat exchange surfaces. The liquid formulation retards microbial growth and prevents debris from adhering to the surfaces, thus minimizing fouling. The composition does not form a film on the treated surfaces, but rather clings via ionic interaction; thus the heat transfer characteristics of the system are not substantially altered. In addition, the composition does not contain any volatile organic compounds, which can be harmful to a building's occupants. An application method is further disclosed that entails spraying the composition into the cooling coils to be treated, drawing the composition across the heat exchange surfaces in an air stream, and drying the surfaces. This method results in the formation of a low-friction antimicrobial deposit that will resist fouling and microbial growth.

  • Patent number: 5525334
Abstract: Proposed is a method for vascular embolization of the blood vessel of a patient by introducing an aqueous solution of a specific thermosensitive polymer, which is liquid at low temperatures but causes coagulation when heated up to the body temperature of the patient, into the blood vessel followed by in situ heating of the solution. The thermosensitive polymer found to be suitable for the purpose is a homopolymer or copolymer of an N-substituted (meth) acrylamide monomer having a specified intrinsic viscosity in tetrahydrofuran and gives an aqueous solution capable of exhibiting phase transition from a liquid to a coagulate at a transition temperature of 10.degree. to 37.degree..
