  • Patent number: 5685700
Abstract: A pump for transferring fragile and aggressive liquids such as human blood and comprising a pumping chamber along with a pair of fluid inlet ports arranged in oppositely disposed relationship on the chamber, and one or more outlet ports arranged transversely and medially of the inlet ports. A rotor is positioned within the pumping chamber having a dual-conical configuration converging toward opposed polar end regions and with an axis of rotation extending between the polar regions. The rotor includes magnets which are arranged at radially spaced locations and with a magnetic drive positioned to deliver rotational driving energy to the rotor. The sole support for the rotor are the hydrodynamic forces acting upon the rotor during its operation, with the rotor body having a relative density of between 10% and 90% of the relative density of the fluid being pumped.

  • Patent number: 5681150
Abstract: A compressor has a swash plate tiltable between a maximum and minimum inclining angles with respect to an axis of the drive shaft according to a difference between pressures in a crank chamber and a suction chamber. An electromagnetic valve is disposed in a pressure passage, and opens or closes the pressure passage according to instruction of an external computer. This instruction is based on an operation status of the compressor so that the electromagnetic valve adjusts the pressure in the crank chamber. The pressure passage connects the crank chamber and the suction chamber. The swash plate is inclined toward the maximum inclining angle when the pressure passage is open to release the pressure in the crank chamber to the suction chamber. The swash plate is inclined toward the minimum inclining angle when the pressure passage is closed to increase the pressure in the crank chamber.

  • Patent number: 5678306
Abstract: Methods are provided for minimizing damage to blood in a blood pump wherein the blood pump comprises a plurality of pump components that may affect blood damage such as clearance between pump blades and housing, number of impeller blades, rounded or flat blade edges, variations in entrance angles of blades, impeller length, and the like. The process comprises selecting a plurality of pump components believed to affect blood damage such as those listed hereinbefore. Construction variations for each of the plurality of pump components are then selected. The pump components and variations are preferably listed in a matrix for easy visual comparison of test results. Blood is circulated through a pump configuration to test each variation of each pump component. After each test, total blood damage is determined for the blood pump. Preferably each pump component variation is tested at least three times to provide statistical results and check consistency of results.

  • Patent number: 5664938
Abstract: An improved mixing unit and check valve for a fluid pumping system wherein gradient proportioning is performed at high pressure are described. The mixing unit has lining means disposed on the inner surface of the chamber for preventing frictional contact between the steel of the chamber and the surface of the rotor. The lining means is formed of a polymeric material selected for frictional compatibility with the rotor, and avoids formation of undesirable particulates by friction with the rotor surface. The check valve has a poppet comprising a midsection dimensioned to provide forward and rearward surfaces against which fluid flow will exert force, a first arm extending transversely from the midsection first side toward the valve inlet, a second arm extending transversely from the midsection second side toward the valve outlet, and first and second resilient seals respectively annularly disposed about the first and second arms.

  • Patent number: 5662459
Abstract: A pump mechanism adapted to float on a reservoir of liquid characterized by a floating enclosure provided with an internal chamber, an open cycling container, disposed within the chamber, an output pipe coupled to the cycling container and coupled to a swivel joint, which is connected to the lower wall of the enclose. A pressurized gas and/or steam source inlet tube, allows pressurized gas to enter the chamber. The interplay between the force of gravity and the force of buoyancy activated by the force of an expanding gas and/or steam are the factors which cycle this device in a pumping action. In operation the cycle begins with the chamber full of liquid and the cycling container resting on the bottom of the chamber. The pressurized gas forces liquid out of the chamber through the pipe located within the cycling container. This continues until the pressure has emptied the cycling container. The pressurized gas will now vent through this pipe.

  • Patent number: 5658134
Abstract: A compressor which provides for minimum clearance in the compression chamber while substantially reducing the heat normally experienced by the piston during the compression stroke of a compressor of this type. The suction valve(s) of the compressor is concentrically mounted in the piston while the discharge valve(s) is concentrically mounted in a stationary position within the cylinder. Since the high heat of compression occurs at the discharge valve, the piston will be much cooler than in prior art compressors of this type which improves the efficiency of the compressor and which substantially extends the operational life of the piston rings.

  • Patent number: 5658133
Abstract: A medical infusion pump (10) for delivering liquids to a patient includes an elastomeric pump chamber (140) contractable between a refill position and a discharge position. An inlet valve (122) is operatively associated with an elastomeric inlet (142) supplying liquid to the pump chamber (140). The inlet valve (122) is selectively positionable in an open position permitting and a closed position preventing flow of liquid between the inlet (142) and the pump chamber (142). An outlet valve (124) is operatively associated with an elastomeric outlet (144) which conveys liquid from the pump chamber (140). The outlet valve (124) is selectively positionable in an open position permitting and a closed position preventing flow of liquid between the outlet (144) and pump chamber (140). A pump motor (256) and associated plunger (120) contracts and expands the pump chamber (140) between the refill position and the discharge position.

  • Patent number: 5655889
Abstract: A combined constant-speed, variable-volume, piston-type air pump and peristalic pump. The air pump has a "minimum gap", i.e., has a piston head which is closely adjacent to the cylinder head at the completion of the compression stroke. The piston intake stroke is selectively adjustable between a maximum and a minimum position to thus vary the volume of air pumped. A motor means drives both pumps simultaneously. The peristalic pump comprises a pump housing mounted on a frame, having an inner circumferential track and a central opening. A rotor is positioned in said central opening, and has at least two rollers mounted thereon for rotation about axes parallel to said shaft axis. Flexible, compressible, hollow tube means is positioned between said rollers and said track.

  • Patent number: 5647732
Abstract: A universal threaded adapter to mount between a pump and a tank can be of two types. The universal threaded adapter is assembled from an adapter body with a tank to adapter gasket seal mounted therein, and a conversion plate, which may be bolted or otherwise secured to both the adapter body and the pump; to thereby efficiently join the pump to the tank. With the dual phase adapter attached to the pump through the mixing threads, the adapter may be shipped separately from the pump. The pumping mechanism provides an aperture with a seal to achieve the desired pumping device while at the same time permitting the required mixing.

  • Patent number: 5647731
Abstract: An air compressor in which oil loss due to the pressure in the cylinder becoming negative during an unload can be prevented, thereby protecting an outlet-side unloader valve.
