  • Patent number: 7676241
Abstract: A wireless access point and multiple wireless terminals exchange point-to-point transmission power control parameters. The wireless access point gathers parameters based on transmissions received from each of the wireless terminals. Each wireless terminal gathers parameters based on transmissions received from each of the other wireless terminals and from the wireless access point. In one operating mode, the parameters gathered by the wireless devices are forwarded to the wireless access point, and, based on all received and local parameters, the wireless access point adjusts its own transmission power and sends control signals to the wireless terminals directing transmission power adjustment. In another mode, all parameters are exchanged between every wireless terminal and the access point so that each can independently or cooperatively make transmission power control decisions.

  • Patent number: 7660559
Abstract: Methods and devices related to wireless networking. A wireless device has multiple directional antennas and multiple backhaul radio modules which provide point to point wireless links with other wireless devices. Each radio module can use any one of the available directional antennas to link to one other routing device. Antennas are automatically selected for each wireless device by merely setting one device in a “hunt” mode and setting another device in a “listen” mode. Devices in a hunt mode cycle through the available antennas by sequentially transmitting transmit messages to devices in the listen mode using each of the available antennas in turn. Devices in the listen mode also cycle through their available antennas by sequentially “listening” for transmit messages. A listen mode device, receives transmit messages on each of its available antennas, and, after gathering the relevant data, determines which of its antennas is best suited for communicating with the hunt mode device.

  • Patent number: 7657278
Abstract: A method and apparatus for deriving a combined transmit power control (TPC) command during handover are disclosed. During handover, a combined TPC command is generated from two or more TPC commands. The combined TPC command is set to ?1 for decrease of the transmit power if a soft symbol of the TPC signal from any cell indicates decrease of the transmit power and the signal-to-interference ratio for the cell is greater than a reliability threshold. Otherwise, the combined TPC command is set to ?1 if the function ? is not greater than the combining threshold, and set to +1 if the function ? is greater than the combining threshold, where the function ? represents a log-likelihood ratio of a probability density function of the combined TPC command.

  • Patent number: 7656834
Abstract: Discontinuous transmission and reception of point-to-multipoint service data between a network and a mobile terminal is achieved by transmitting scheduling information from the network to the mobile terminal via a first common channel. • Patent number: 7657277
Abstract: Apparatus and methods efficiently estimate signal-to-noise ratios of a received signal irrespective of intentional adjustments to transmitting power due to fluctuating data rates. For example, in one embodiment, the variation in power due to the change in data rate is decoupled from environmental sources for variations in power. In one embodiment, the signal to noise ratio is adjusted for the data rate. In another embodiment, another signal is used as a reference for the signal to noise computation. This advantageously permits a system to efficiently and accurately control power in a power control loop for efficient use of spectral bandwidth and for relatively good grade of service (GoS).

  • Patent number: 7643842
Abstract: Techniques to adjust the setpoint of a power control loop in a wireless communication system. The setpoint may be adjusted based on frame status indicative of erased/good decoded frames, one or more (typically soft) metrics indicative of the confidence in the decoded results, power surplus/deficit indicative of the difference between the received signal quality and the setpoint, setpoint surplus/deficit indicative of the difference between the setpoint and a threshold Eb/Nt needed for the desired level of performance, or a combination thereof. The metrics may include re-encoded symbol error rate, re-encoded power metric, modified Yamamoto metric, minimum or average LLR among decoded bits, number of decoding iterations, and possibly others. The setpoint may be adjusted in different manners and/or by different amounts depending on the above-noted factors. The techniques may be employed for forward and/or reverse links in CDMA systems.

  • Patent number: 7634223
Abstract: A communication system provides separate subscription keys for a non-subscriber version of a broadcast-multicast flow and a subscriber-only version of the flow, thereby controlling who may store or render the flow. In one embodiment, separate subscription keys may be assigned to a same broadcast-multicast flow. The communication system may then switch the keys used to encrypt the flow, or may use different keys to encrypt different copies of the flow, in order to allow at least non-subscribers to view one version of the flow and only subscribers to view another version of the flow. In another embodiment, the communication system may assign a group subscription key to a group of broadcast-multicast flows that is separate from the keys assigned to each individual flow. The group subscription key may then be used to encrypt a non-subscriber version of any broadcast-multicast flow in the group of broadcast-multicast flows.

  • Patent number: 7630731
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method efficiently manage reverse link resources by allowing a mobile station to select between transmitting a payload at a standard power level and transmitting a smaller payload at a boosted power level. The mobile station, therefore, can autonomously select a QoS (Quality of Service) level for physical layer packets. Based on reverse link transmission information received from a base station, the mobile station derives a reverse link transmission guideline defining the power levels and associated payloads for at least a standard service and boosted service. The mobile station selects a reverse link transmission power level from a plurality of power levels including at least a standard reverse link transmission power level associated with a standard payload size and a boosted reverse link transmission power level associated with a boosted payload size where the standard payload size is greater than the boosted payload size.

  • Patent number: 7610059
Abstract: A method and system is disclosed wherein timeslots designated in a wireless communication system as Common Physical Channel (CPCH) timeslots may be reused for user traffic. A CPCH timeslot used in a first cell may be reused by a second cell, assuming the first and second cells transmit control information in different CPCH timeslots, for user traffic. The second cell is permitted to reuse the timeslot in which the first cell is transmitting control information so long as the second cell's reuse of that timeslot does not degrade reception of control information in the first cell.

  • Patent number: 7610024
Abstract: Transmit and/or receive diversity is achieved using multiple antennas. In some embodiments, a single transmitter chain within a wireless terminal is coupled over time to a plurality of transmit antennas. At any given time, a controllable switching module couples the single transmitter chain to one the plurality of transmit antennas.
