  • Patent number: 4036344
Abstract: A low loss, multiple element wet clutch mechanism for connecting two mechanical members to each other wherein the two members are concentric about a common axis and either or both are supported for rotation about the common axis. The connection is made by clutch elements which are forced together by an actuator. Clutch elements on one side of the interface are keyed to one member to limit rotational movement about the axis to that of the member while clutch elements on the other side of the interface are keyed to a rotating annular carrier element carried by the second member. A second annular element mounted on the same member as the carrier is keyed to the member for rotational movement about the axis but is free to translate axially of the member to engage the rotating annular carrier element to key the clutch elements carried by it to that member. A clutch engaging actuator when actuated first causes the two annular elements to engage and thereafter the clutch elements.

  • Patent number: 4033199
Abstract: A toe clip for the pedals of bicycles or other pedal vehicles. The toe clip is formed from a flat cutout metal blank which is suitably bent to form the usual toe receiving space between the toe supporting portion and a turned back portion. For fastening the toe clip to any of various types of pedals, for common road bicycles or for racers, the toe clip is provided with side panels which are bent downward at right angles to the toe supporting portion, these panels forming gusset plates for strengthening the connection of the toe clip to its pedal. Extending from one side of each gusset plate is an apertured fastening lug which may be bent inwardly or outwardly at right angles to the gusset plates or left in the plane thereof, depending on what type of pedal the toe clip is to be fitted. The rear bearing edges formed on the gusset plate bear against the longitudinal face of the pedal frame on which the toe clip is mounted.

  • Patent number: 4033144
Abstract: A flexible coupling for connecting a rotary drive to a rotary load where the respective axes are subject to angular or parallel misalignment. An input hub on the drive shaft is connected to an intermediate member through a tripodic connection assembly and the intermediate member is in turn connected to an output hub on the load shaft through another tripodic connection assembly. Each tripodic connection assembly comprises three flexible resilient elements in the form of strips generally arranged to form an equiangular triangle. The strips are each connected by rigid connections to one of the hubs at one of their ends and to the intermediate member at the other of their ends. The respective connections for corresponding ends of the strips are at three symmetrically spaced locations around a circumscribing circle. The strips are adapted to flex intermediate their ends during rotation of the drive and load to accommodate angular misalignment and/or parallel misalignment between the respective axes of the shafts.

  • Patent number: 4031714
Abstract: A flexible coupling includes a plurality of flexible torque-transmitting members arranged in a circular pattern around the axis of the coupling. Each member is of an elastomeric material and has two parallel stud-receiving passageways. The studs projecting through the radially outer passageways of the torque-transmitting members are supported on their axially outer ends by one part of the coupling. The studs projecting through the radially inner passageways are supported at their axially outer ends by the other part of the coupling. Thus torques are transmitted from one part of the coupling by way of the radially outer studs, the torque-transmitting members, and the radially inner studs, to the other part of the coupling, or vice versa.

  • Patent number: 4030466
Abstract: A rotor for the high voltage distribution system of an internal combustion engine, the contact member of the rotor being movable relative to the rotor shaft for a desired advance-retard characteristic. The rotor itself does not move relative to the rotor shaft. The device is for use with electronic ignition systems and one function is to replace the mechanical advance provided in conventional breaker point type distributors by the centrifugal weights which rotate the entire cam and rotor assembly. A range of characteristics responsive to engine velocity and/or acceleration is provided for within the basic design.

  • Patent number: 4030371
Abstract: Gyroscopic apparatus in which the rotor is elastically-connected to its drive, whereby deflection of the rotor bends the connection and thus sets up a deflection torque which acts upon the rotor. The connection of the rotor to the drive also includes masses carried by springs. When the rotor deflects, these masses oscillate in directions parallel to the driving axis, and when the rotor is spinning at a certain (tuning) speed the sum of the oscillating forces exerted upon the rotor by the individual moving masses will be a steady quantity which may be made equal and opposite to the deflection torque. The apparatus may thus behave like a "free rotor" gyroscope.
