Patent number: 3985213Abstract: A resettable release device to replace a shear pin connection between two members comprises a drive ball yieldably held in a seating in one of the members by a plunger slidable in a housing in the other member. The drive ball is located in a bore in the housing. The plunger has an annular shoulder against which a crowded ring of detent balls is held by two ball control rings resiliently urged towards each other. On overload, the drive ball moves out of its seating by pushing the detent balls up over the shoulder, forcing ball control rings apart. Pushing the plunger back to its original position resets the device.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1974Date of Patent: October 12, 1976Assignee: The Wellman Bibby Company LimitedInventor: George Roderick Braggins

Patent number: 3984999Abstract: An elastic friction overload coupling having two coupling halves and friction bodies arranged therebetween, wherein both coupling halves are pressed against one another with spring force for transmitting a rotational moment, and wherein at the one coupling half there is fixedly mounted against rotation a ring-shaped element and biased in axial direction by spring force against the aforementioned one coupling half. Components of the second coupling half are arranged between the first coupling half and its ring-shaped element. According to the invention there are provided screws in order to detach the ring-shaped element from the first coupling half, so as to be able to exchange segment-shaped friction bodies or sectors of the first and/or second coupling halves, without having to displace the latter upon their shafts or to dismantle the same, and that the screws are arranged at the region of the outer periphery of the coupling and carry the springs as entrainment means for the ring-shaped element.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1974Date of Patent: October 12, 1976Inventor: Jean Ernst Kopp

Patent number: 3982408Abstract: Herein disclosed is a flexible gear type coupling for connecting a pair of substantially coaxially aligned shafts to transmit torque therebetween. The flexible coupling comprises a hub having external gear teeth surrounding an outer portion thereof and rotatably connected to one of the shafts. A sleeve surrounds the hub and has internal gear teeth surrounding an inner portion thereof and in meshing engagement with the external gear teeth of the hub. A shear spacer is connected between the sleeve and the other of the shafts for transmitting torque from the one shaft to the other shaft. The shear spacer is adapted to shear when excessive torque is applied thereto for protecting the coupling from being damaged from the excessive torque. A capturing device is interposed between the hub and the sleeve for maintaining the sleeve substantially concentric about the hub upon shearing of the shear spacer.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 1975Date of Patent: September 28, 1976Assignee: Koppers Company, Inc.Inventor: John Wright

Patent number: 3982442Abstract: A mechanism for the precisional turning of a threaded shaft or leadscrew wherein the turning of a hand knob is used to precisionally regulate the amount of turning of the shaft. By the hand turning of a drive knob, a pair of ring drive keys are made to move along the upper surface of a cam unit having two lobes and two recesses. A castellated counter ring, which is placed around the cam unit has equally spaced cogs which normally will not be engaged by the ring drive keys. However, when the ring drive keys fall into the recesses of the cam surface, they engage against two cogs on the counter ring causing them to shift a fixed amount, after which the rise of the lobe of the cam raises the ring drive keys out of engagement with the cogs of the counter ring. The effect of this is to turn the shaft, for example, 1/10 of a shaft revolution.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1974Date of Patent: September 28, 1976Assignee: The Singer CompanyInventor: John Shiurila

Patent number: 3977213Abstract: Concentric driving and driven clutch rings have teeth in a common radial plane on one end of the rings. The clutch rings are normally coupled together by a coupler ring having teeth engaging the teeth of both clutch rings, this engagement being maintained by an axial clamp bolt. In the event of dangerous overspeed the clamp bolt is broken and the coupler ring is disengaged from the clutch rings by an explosive charge acting on an axial piston. The explosive charge is detonated by a firing pin actuated by a steel ball impelled by centrifugal force. The ball is retained by a magnet until centrifugal force exceeds the magnetic force holding the ball.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 1975Date of Patent: August 31, 1976Assignee: Guy F. Patent number: 3973412Abstract: A torque-limiting coupling having two co-axial rotary members interconnected by one or more shear pins extending between two fixing blocks detachably secured one to each of the two rotary members. Each shear pin is firmly secured in bores in the two blocks, and each block is firmly secured by two screws onto a chordal flat on the periphery of each rotary member, so that, in the event of a pin being sheared, the blocks with the broken pin can be removed radially and then replaced with another pin. In a coupling having two or more pins the shear load is distributed equally between the pins. Each pin may be bonded in the bores in the fixing blocks. Alternatively, each pin may be a loose fit in the bores and the block dimensioned so that when it is screwed firmly onto its chordal flat the block is flexed or deformed so as to reduce the diameter of the bore and thereby clamp the shear pin firmly in the bore.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 1975Date of Patent: August 10, 1976Inventor: Howard Price Miles
