  • Patent number: 5421227
Abstract: A web of coherent labels or coherent blanks of wrapping material is advanced along an elongated path toward a severing station where the web is cut at selected intervals by an orbiting knife in cooperation with a stationary or moving knife to yield a succession of sections of desired length. If the web is to be arrested for a shorter or longer period, it is first accelerated above its standard speed and is thereupon decelerated to zero speed during the last interval of advancement so that the length of the leader of the web extending beyond the severing station matches the desired length. Analogously, when the web is restarted, it is accelerated above the standard speed and is thereupon decelerated to such standard speed during the first interval of advancement so that the knives sever a section whose length again matches the desired length.

  • Patent number: 5417360
Abstract: During the feeding of offset continuous collated business form webs to the slow rollers of a burster, it is important to insure that the top web properly passes through the slow roll section. By providing a number of puller wheels having aluminum cores and sawtooth rubber coverings atop conveyor belts passing over crowned pulleys which are oversped relative to the web speed, proper feed to the burster is provided. Form deflecting fingers extending from the puller wheels to the burster also help. In order to prevent the conveyor belts from running off the crowned pulleys an aligner is provided which has a number of vertical dowel pins with plastic sleeves covering and rotatable with respect to the dowel pins, disposed on each side of a conveyor belt associated with a crowned pulley and puller wheel. The aligner is provided immediately upstream of a rubber covered drive roll for the conveyor belts.

  • Patent number: 5417133
Abstract: A stamping and forming machine positively prevents slug pulling by stripping the slug off of the end of the punch as the punch is being withdrawn from the die opening after a blanking operation. This is accomplished by providing a die insert support in supporting contact with the die insert having an opening that is identical to the opening in the die insert, but that is rotationally or laterally displaced therefrom by a small amount. As the punch pushes a slug through the opening in the die insert, the slug encounters the displaced opening in the die insert support and is shifted slightly as it is forced into that opening by the punch. As the punch is withdrawn from the die insert opening, the shifted slug cannot return through the opening and is stripped off of the end of the punch.

  • Patent number: 5410925
Abstract: The aeration field of an aerator membrane is formed by perforating the membrane with a rotary device having a plurality of perforating tools. The membrane also rotates while it is being perforated, and the membrane and tool simultaneously move in a radial direction, with respect to the membrane, so that a spiral line of perforations results.

  • Patent number: 5407115
Abstract: A printed paper dispensing and severing apparatus includes an elongated paper to be printed, dispensed and severed. A printer including a positive drive mechanism projects paper along a guide path to an exit chute in a housing, the guide path being defined at least in part by a deflection plate so that the projection of the paper will encounter the deflection plate and be guided to exit the housing. A cutting mechanism adjacent the guide path includes a blade with a centrally peaked ridge in a guide surface generally parallel to the guide path. The reliability of this mechanism is dramatically improved due the absence of moving parts in the guide path, cutter blade, deflection plate and exit chute. The guide path and the exit chute are angled to one another, the elongated paper is provided in the form of a roll of paper which gives the paper a curl and the curl of the paper is in the same sense as the angle.
