  • Patent number: 5524375
Abstract: A method for gathering worms, and particularly earthworms, includes the step of applying to the surface of soil containing the earthworms a composition containing a terpene. The terpene is preferably limonene, and most preferably d-limonene. The composition is preferably diluted in water. The earthworms come substantially to the surface of the soil within a few minutes, and can then be gathered by hand or another suitable technique. A composition for gathering worms is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5524377
Abstract: A jig trailer fishing lure made of a synthetic material capable of absorbing water and fish attractant liquids. The lure is capable of completely drying out between uses yet quickly re-acquires a life-like texture, suppleness and buoyancy when immersed in water. The jig trailer includes a head portion that is sufficiently tear resistant to resist tearing when repeatedly penetrated by a fish hook or struck by fish. A tail portion extends downstream from the head portion and exhibits motions that attracts game fish when pulled through water. The synthetic material is an artificial chamois-type material preferably made from a poly-vinyl-alcohol sponge.

  • Patent number: 5524704
Abstract: The subject of the invention is a process for the continuous casting of very small-diameter wires directly from liquid metal, according to which said liquid metal is made to flow out of a heated and pressurized container made of refractory material, forming a jet of liquid. metal having a diameter equal to or slightly greater than that of the wire to be cast, and said jet is made to solidify by making it penetrate into a layer of moving cooling liquid deposited on the internal wall of a drum rotating about a horizontal axis, wherein said container is fed, continuously or intermittently, with solid metal without interrupting casting and wherein said solid metal is melted inside said container. The subject of the invention is also a device for the continuous casting of very small-diameter wires directly from liquid metal, allowing this process to be implemented.

  • Patent number: 5524699
Abstract: A method and system for producing a continuous supply of low volume fraction composite material that can be fed continuously into one or more molds. Composite inputs are fed into a mixing device such that a continuous supply of mixed composite material is available from the output side of the mixing device. The operation removes the step of creating master ingots and removes the need for a two step process in which the material is melted twice. This invention reduces the cost of producing composite components, reduces batch-to-batch variations, and allows for a continuous production flow. In addition, the invention allows for a much greater flexibility in the selection and optimization of material systems.

  • Patent number: 5524700
Abstract: A supply vessel containing a molten bath has a discharge opening which is controlled by a valve. The discharge opening is located in a vertical plane and has a horizontal axis. The valve includes a set of valve plates having through openings for the passage of molten material. The valve plates are rotatable relative to one another in order to bring the through openings into and out of register and thus open and close the valve. One of the valve plates sits adjacent the discharge opening and is stationary while another of the valve plates is remote from the discharge opening and is freely rotatable. A mold having an inlet, a casting cavity and feeders between the inlet and casting cavity is brought into engagement with the freely rotatable valve plate. The mold is positioned with the casting cavity below the upper surface of the molten bath and with the feeders below the casting cavity. The valve is opened and the casting cavity filled with molten material via the mold inlet and the feeders.

  • Patent number: 5524385
Abstract: An improved fish hook and method of attaching line to the hook shank with a knot such that knot strength is maximized, and line force is dissipated along the longitudinal axis of the shank. The improvement comprises a hollow tubular member attached to a fish hook shank such that, when attached, the tube is substantially aligned with the shank, and positioned proximate the shank head. Fishing line is secured to the hook shank by threading the line through the attached tube and knotting the line about the shank such that line load is dissipated longitudinally along the shank axis. The foregoing method of attaching line has been found to increase knot strength while dissipating force along the longitudinal shank axis.

  • Patent number: 5519958
Abstract: There is an ice fishing rig and a kit for the same. The rig is selectively adjustable between `tip-up` and `rod-and reel` configurations. The kit comprises a handle, an elongated reel securable to the handle, and a rod selectively securable to the handle in a forwardly projecting position or a rearwardly projecting position. The rod includes a fishing line guide, eg. a hole. There is also means cooperative with the handle for selectively supporting the rig in the `tip-up` configuration over an ice fishing hole. The latter means preferably includes a pair of rods, each having a length greater than a width of a typical ice fishing hole. Preferably the rig also includes a spring indicator cooperatively adapted to alert an fisherman when a fish pulls on a fishing line extending from the rig operatively in the `tip-up` position.

  • Patent number: 5518059
Abstract: To minimize the amount of setting gas to be gasified and to be introduced into a molding sand containing a gas-settable binder, a metered volume of the setting liquid is injected directly into a gassing plate arranged in front of an opening leading to a cavity containing the molding sand. Heat energy is supplied to the gassing plate to effect gasification of the liquid. A superpure gas then is produced and is directed through the molding sand. Consequently, not only is only a small amount of setting liquid required to set the molding sand but only a small amount of compressed air or other non-reactive gas is required for scrubbing to remove the residual superpure gas from the sand. Therefore, cleaning or removal of the gas from the set molding sand can be performed at a low cost.

  • Patent number: 5515637
Abstract: A rod has a region at a selected place between its upper and lower ends formed into a helical spring in one embodiment. A part of the rod extends upwardly from the spring through a decoy body and a part of the rod below the spring is pushed into the ground to support the decoy. A spherical bead on the rod, even if the helical spring is not formed in the rod, serves as a thrust bearing allowing the decoy to swing about the vertical axis of the rod like a weather vane to simulate natural body and head lateral and frontal movements and to tilt when a mild breeze impinges on the body of the decoy.

  • Patent number: 5515638
Abstract: A limit line linear fish catching device having an elongated barrel and a coaxially disposed internal elastic spring humanely allows hooked fish to remain in the water until harvested. Preferably the elastic tube spring extends between a pair of spaced apart guiding elements coaxially centered within the device. A limit line interconnects both ends of the tube spring and limits the elongation of the spring. The limit line extends from the support through the device to the fishing line and interconnects the components of the device. The device is cocked by stretching the spring tube. The tube functions as a linear spring. The limit line from the bottom end of the barrel is secured by captivating a stop in a slot defined in the barrel end. When a fish strikes, the stop is dislodged from the slot, freeing the line. This action activates the spring which contracts and hooks the fish.

  • Patent number: 5515906
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for pneumatically controlling the velocity of flow of liquid metal from a tundish into a continuous casting machine through a nozzle. A chamber encloses the nozzle outlet, and at least a portion of the continuous casting machine, and a pressurized gas is supplied to the chamber. The flow velocity of the liquid metal at the nozzle outlet is controlled by controlling the gas pressure in the chamber in response to the level of the liquid metal in the tundish, and the measured atmospheric pressure acting on the liquid metal in the tundish.

  • Patent number: 5513464
Abstract: An active fishing lure that impales a fish in response to an initial fish strike. The disclosed tackle comprises an elongated, durable stainless steel or resilient plastic casing that may be externally disguised as bait. The casing houses a trigger, a compression spring and a torsion spring. The casing also partially houses the secondary hook when it is cocked. The secondary hook rotates between a cocked position and a triggered position. The primary hook is attached to the trigger. The trigger temporarily secures the secondary hook in the cocked position with a projecting tang. The secondary hook is released by a fish strike upon the primary hook. When the trailing primary hook is attacked by a fish the trigger is displaced linearly within the casing to unleash the active or secondary hook. The torsion spring forcefully rotates the secondary hook toward a triggered position where it impales the fish. In this position, the disclosed device prevents the escape of the fish.
