  • Patent number: 9578786
Abstract: A rack-mountable computer system enables an airflow that cools components in an upstream portion of the computer system interior to be cooled through mixing with a bypass airflow downstream of the components in the upstream portion. The mixed airflow can cool components in a downstream portion of the interior. The bypass airflow is directed by a bypass plenum that is unencompassed by the separate plenum that directs the airflow to cool the upstream portion components. The bypass plenum can be established by one surface of a component that supports one or more heat-producing components in the separate plenum, including an underside of a circuit board mounted in the interior. Relative flow rates through the separate plenums can be adjusted, via flow control elements, to separately control heat removal from components upstream and downstream of the air mixing, based at least in part upon air temperatures in the separate interior portions.

  • Patent number: 9572292
Abstract: Systems and methods for providing security for authentication devices—such as electronically readable cards or ID badges with embedded RFID chips or NFC capability—may include an envelope or pocket-like case for carrying an electronically readable card, having an electrically conductive, non-opaque sleeve that can be moved to cover or expose the electronically readable card and that prevents information on the card from being electronically read when covered yet still allows the card to be seen when covered. In one or more embodiments, the sleeve may be a wire mesh that is flexible enough to be compressed to expose the card yet stiff (or rigid) enough to be extended to cover the card and that is transparent enough to allow reading visual information on the surface of the card when covering the card. Protection can be switched off by a mechanical switch that leaves the protection normally on.

  • Patent number: 9435590
Abstract: A thin design heat transfer device for thermal management is described herein. The heat transfer device uses a cold plate that is independent or “floating” relative to a spring mechanism employed to generate contact pressure with a heat-generating device. A bridge component associated with the spring mechanism is designed to span over the cold plate and contact the cold plate when the spring deforms, which therefore allows the cold plate to be independent of the spring mechanism. The independence between the cold plate and the spring mechanism enables deformation in the spring mechanism to drive contact pressure while eliminating or reducing corresponding deformation in the cold plate. Consequently, components of the heat transfer device may be made relatively thin and have less stiffness than traditional designs, but still provide acceptable contact pressure and quality for effective thermal management.
