The particular composition is comprised essentially of between about 2 and about 10 weight percent of one or more beta eutectoid elements selected from the group consisting of iron, manganese, chromium and cobalt, with weight percentage limits in each such individual element being respectively about 5, about 5.5, about 9 and about 4.
Abstract: A flushing arrangement for a metallurgical vessel having a metal outer shell, a bottom lined with a permanent lining, on which adjacently arranged refractory bricks are applied as working lining, and pipes inserted in recesses of the bricks at predetermined sites and having flat cross sections, through which flush gas flows. In order to provide a flushing means that is simple to produce and install and offers a great safety with regard to a melt breakthrough, a rigid supply pipe for flush gas is led through the metal outer shell, reaching into the permanent lining. To its end lying in the permanent lining, at least two, yet at most four, distributing pipes are welded. They diverge from the end of the supply pipe and pass over into straight pipe sections arranged in recesses of the bricks of the working lining. The distributing pipes that are connected to one supply pipe each enclose one brick.

Abstract: Wear-resistant materials and articles, wherein an amorphous material having a hardness of greater than about 1600 VHN is utilized to protect wear-susceptible portions of substrates or is itself made into a wear-resistant article. Amorphous materials having hardnesses greater than about 1600 VHN are found to have surprisingly great wear resistance and can be used to prepare wear-resistant articles. Particularly satisfactory results have been obtained with metal-metalloid systems such as W--Ru--B, Re--Mo--B, Mo--Ru--B, and Co--Nb--B materials.

The apparatus comprises one or more refractory blocks which may be set within a metal canister. The refractory blocks have a plurality of slots each containing one or more small diameter nonreactive metal tubes for conveying gases. The refractory block may also contain means for measuring the rate of wear of the refractory blocks in the canister.

Abstract: The present invention includes casting, e.g., such as by roll casting, or slab casting, an alloy having components in the composition range of about 0.5-1.2% iron, 0.7-1.3% manganese, and 0-0.5% silicon by weight, homogenizing the cast alloy at temperatures below about 1100.degree. F., preferably below about 1050.degree. F. to control the microstructure, and cold rolling to a final product gauge. Such a final product gauge for fin stock applications include thickness in the range of about 0.003-0.006 inch. Abstract: The invention relates to magnetic Pd-Co alloys for use in dental prostheses, in particular in root caps. The alloys contain, by weight, 40-60% Pd, 20-59% Co, 0-40% Ni, 0.1-5% Cr, 0.05-0.2% Re, 0.01-0.5% Fe, 0.5-3% Ga, 0-0.1% B, 0-5% Pt or Au, and the gallium may be replaced, in full or in part, by Sn, In, Zn or Mn.
Abstract: A novel aluminum alloy contains vanadium as an alloying element, at a concentration ranging from about 0.02% to about 0.4% by weight. The vanadium imparts corrosion resistance to the alloy, particularly when the alloy is used as a core alloy in a vacuum brazing sheet. A further improvement in corrosion resistance is achieved by processing the alloy or brazing sheet in such a manner that the final processing step is a cold work to a reduction of about 10% to about 20%.
Abstract: A method of joining ceramics and metals to themselves and to one another at about 800.degree. C. is described using a brazing filler metal consisting essentially of 35 to 50 at. % copper, 40 to 50 at. % silver, 1 to 15 at. % titanium, and 2 to 8 at. % tin. This method produces strong joints that can withstand high service temperatures and oxidizing environments.

Abstract: A plug comprises a refractory body having a plurality of gas passgeways through which gas is blown into a refining apparatus. Each gas passageway may be defined by at least two metal tubes which are longitudinally spaced apart from each other. Alternatively, each gas passageway may be at least partly defined by an electrically insulating tube. The plug may alternatively have a plurality of gas passageways each having a bare refractory wall, while the body is reinforced with nonconductive mineral fibers, or metal wires which do not continuously extend throughout the plug. The plug may further be provided with a plurality of elongated holes extending in parallel to the gas passgeways from the inner surface of the body facing the interior of the refining apparatus to an intermediate portion thereof.
Abstract: A lead based alloy is modified by adding thereto a surfactant consisting of about 0.01 to 0.5 weight percent tellurium, about 0.01 to 0.5 weight percent selenium, about 0.01 to 0.5 weight percent selenium plus about 0.1-0.5 weight percent antimony, and mixtures thereof. The alloy is rapidly solidified by forming a melt thereof containing the surfactant addition and quenching the melt on a moving chill surface at a quenching rate of at least about 10.sup.3 .degree. C./sec. Addition of the surfactant lowers melt surface tension and thereby promotes improved wetting.

Abstract: An oxygen lance for steelmaking is provided with a top adapter assembly of generally T-shaped configuration including a central tubular barrel and a transverse top plate which both contain the O'rings required to assure complete adequate sealing between the oxygen gas and the cooling medium utilized in the furnace. The O'rings are placed on the outside circumference of the central barrel and are held in place in grooves therein so that they cannot be accidentally displaced during oxygen blowing or during assembly and disassembly of the lance. Access to the O'rings is simplified and assured while maintaining complete sealing integrity of the T-shaped top plate and complete sealing reliability during operation. The T-shaped top plate carries the sealing O'rings in grooves provided in the tubular vertical barrel and in a transverse plate thus providing means whereby interchange of the bottom assembly in the lance combination is quickly achieved in the field or factory.
