Abstract: A bleaching composition comprises (a) hydrogen or a peroxide to produce hydrogen peroxide in its aqueous solution and (b) an organic peracid precursor having the formula (I) in which a quaternary ammonium is connected with an alkyl through an ether, an amide or an ester.
Abstract: The invention provides novel bleaching compositions comprising peracid precursors having oxynitrogen leaving groups. Peracid precursors containing these leaving groups provide new, proficient and cost-effective compounds for fabric bleaching. These compounds have the general structures: ##STR1## wherein R is a straight or branched chain C.sub.1-20 alkyl, alkoxyl, cycloalkyl and mixtures thereof; R.sup.1 contains at least one carbon atom which is singly bonded directly to N; n is an integer from 1 to 6 and X is methylene or a heteroatom; or ##STR2## wherein n is the same as in (I); but R.sup.2 contains a carbon atom doubly bonded directly to N, and, either X is a heteroatom, R is C.sub.4-17 alkyl or both.
Abstract: The invention relates to a liquid-crystalline medium based on a mixture of polar compounds of positive dielectric anisotropy, characterized in that it contains one or more compounds of the general formula I ##STR1## in which Q is alkylene having up to 5 carbon atoms or a single bond, X is H or F, and R is alkyl, oxaalkyl, fluoroalkyl or alkenyl, in each case having up to 7 carbon atoms.

Abstract: Uptake, binding, and/or displacement of atrial natriuretic factor in a target organ of a mammal can be quantified by nuclear imaging. A diagnostically effective amount of a radio-labelled mammalian atrial natriuretic factor, active fragment or analog thereof is administered to a live mammal, and the live mammal or a portion thereof is subsequently imaged at one or more time intervals using a suitable radio-detecting device to quantify the uptake, binding and/or displacement of the radio-labelled atrial natriuretic factor, fragment or analog in one or more target organs.

Abstract: An improved one stage, upflow process for coal gasification whereby a dry particulate carbonaceous material and an oxygen-containing gas are combusted in a vertical gasifier thereby converting the carbonaceous material (coal) into a hot gas. The hot, entrained flyslag gas is then contacted with a cooled, recycled gas in a quench zone, thus cooling the gaseous product stream and causing the molten slag particles to convert to nonsticky flyslag particles. The high level thermal energy from the flyslag-laden gaseous product stream is recovered in a fire tube heat exchanger and the flyslag particles from the gaseous product stream are separated by conventional means and recycled back to the gasifier. The product raw gas is further treated for use in a gas turbine to produce electricity.

Abstract: A biodegradation apparatus comprising an enclosed vessel for holding a large volume of soil contaminated with hydrocarbons. Air diffusers uniformly within the vessel force moistened air through the vessel thereby removing volatile hydrocarbons from the contaminated soil. Outgoing air is supplied to vapor phase bioreactor for the removal of hydrocarbon contaminants from outgoing air. The outgoing air is next supplied to a granular activated carbon filter system which absorbs remaining hydrocarbons and then expels non-polluted air into the atmosphere concluding phase one treatment of the hydrocarbon contaminated soil. Phase two treatment of the hydrocarbon contaminated soil is initiated by utilizing high pressure injection nozzles to force water with surfactant additives through the soil thereby forming at the upper portion of the enclosed vessel a supernatant which includes hydrocarbon contaminants.

Abstract: This invention relates to an aqueous process for recycling polyacetal, and moldings thereof, into formaldehyde monomer solution, said process occurring at elevated temperature and pressure and in the presence of an acid decomposition catalyst, such as sulfuric acid. The resultant formaldehyde monomer solution can be reacted to form trioxane and then be cycled into a trioxane-based polyacetal manufacturing process or, alternatively, it can be further treated and then be cycled into a formaldehyde-monomer-based polyacetal manufacturing process.
