  • Patent number: 4721311
Abstract: A mechanical seal assembly provided with an annular seal cavity which encircles the seal parts. A coolant circulation tube (i.e., an exit tube) projects through the housing into the seal cavity and is provided with a window-shaped opening in the sidewall thereof opposing the direction of coolant circulation. The lower end of the tube is preferably closed off by a bottom wall which is inclined outwardly away from the rotating seal parts in the direction of fluid circulation. This bottom wall has a lower edge defining the lower edge of the window and disposed closely adjacent the periphery of the rotating seal parts. The substantial quantity of circulating coolant, and the substantial velocity head thereof, passes through the window into the inner end of the tube so that the velocity head is converted into a significant static pressure head, whereupon the liquid is pumped radially outwardly of the tube through a closed circuit having a heat exchanger associated therewith.

  • Patent number: 4720113
Abstract: An annular multilayer seal including a series of more than two successive layers of elastomeric material. The layers vary in hardness in the axial direction of the seal, the outermost layers being the hardest and the innermost layer being the softest. Where the seal has at least five layers, the hardness of each layer between the innermost layer and each outermost layer is about the average of the hardnesses of the innermost and outermost layers. The innermost layer may have a trapezoidal cross-sectional shape, the major base of the trapezoid being at the inside surface of the seal. The thickness of the other layers may vary nonlinearly from the inside surface to the outside surface of the seal.

  • Patent number: 4717162
Abstract: An elastomeric seal having substantially hollow body having a polygonal cross section formed by a bottom wall, a pair of opposed spaced side walls, a top wall and a plurality of internal supporting struts symmetrically arranged about the center of the polygonal cross section. The top wall is formed of a pair of arms extending in a V to each other, the apex of which lies along the center line between the side walls. The side walls are themselves bent inwardly intermediate their ends to extend perpendicular to the respective arms of the top walls. Compression of the parallel side walls, toward each other, causes the inwardly bent portions of the side walls to rotate outwardly resulting in a raising of the apex of the top wall so that the top wall assumes a flat configuration.

  • Patent number: 4715609
Abstract: A seal element includes an elastic body of substantially D-shaped cross section and a sealing fin projecting integrally from an arcuate surface of the D-shaped body. The fin is compact and has an elasticity less than the elasticity of the body. The seal element thus constructed is elastically deformable on installation to such an extent that the arcuate surface is urged by the fin to flex inwardly toward an opposite flat surface of the D-shaped body and is held into sealing engagement with the surface of mating joint surfaces along its two longitudinal portions disposed an opposite sides of the fin.

  • Patent number: 4714259
Abstract: In a sealing ring structure comprising a sealing ring (1) made of a tough-elastic plastic material and a stressing ring (11) made of a rubber-elastic material, the sealing ring (1) is provided with an annular recess (2) on its sealing surface which rests against the other machine component (14). The stressing ring (11) is arranged in the sealing ring (1) approximately centrically relative to the said recess so that the force of the stressing ring (11) is distributed over the two end portions of the sealing ring (1) defining the recess (2). Any dimensional deviations resulting from tolerances or temperature changes are compensated by smaller or greater deflection of the central portion of the sealing ring (1), without notable changes to the surface pressures encountered between the sealing ring (1) and the sealing surface (15) which are essential for the proper operation.
