  • Patent number: 4664392
Abstract: An annular seal assembly which is adapted to be utilized in a vehicle air conditioning compressor. The seal assembly includes an outer annular support housing which is sealingly secured to the main body of the compressor in coaxial relationship with a rotatable shaft. An annular PTFE seal element includes an outer annular periphery sealingly secured to the support housing, and an inner annular periphery adapted to sealingly engage the rotatable shaft. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the outer annular housing of the seal assembly is formed to include an inwardly facing annular recessed portion which is adapted to receive an annular gasket ring utilized to provide a seal between the PTFE seal element and the outer annular housing. The outer annular housing is also provided with an outwardly facing inner annular recessed portion which is adapted to receive a suitable tool for removing the seal element from the main body of the compressor.

  • Patent number: 4664390
Abstract: A weather seal device for providing a seal between a surface having longitudinal ridges and/or valleys and an elongate conduit extending therethrough, the device having an apertured base of resilient deformable material and a sleeve of resilient material integral with the base and projecting from one side. The base in use is superimposed on the surface and the elongated conduit extends through the aperture and through the sleeve. The base has a marginal edge portion to be positioned in use so that it extends in a direction inclined in the direction of the longitudinal ridges and/or valleys. The marginal edge portion is contoured along its length in a direction normal to the plane of the base, so that in a free state the length of the marginal edge portion measured along the contours is greater than the linear length.

  • Patent number: 4664393
Abstract: A sealing boot for sealing a power transmitting mechanical joint of the plunging type, especially a mechanical joint which is subject to angular articulation between its input member and output member. The mechanical joint has an outer member, and the outer member has an external cylindrical surface. The sealing boot has a semi-rigid or non-flexible segment which surrounds a portion of the cylindrical surface and this non-flexible segment has a cylindrical slot that sealingly and slidingly receives the cylindrical end portion of a second boot segment, which is also of semi-rigid or non-flexible character. The sliding action of the second boot segment in the first boot segment results from the plunging action of the joint. The second boot segment also has a slot at its other end and this slot slidingly and sealingly receives an end portion of a third boot segment. The third boot segment, in turn, seals to a member of the mechanical joint.

  • Patent number: 4662643
Abstract: A head gasket assembly for closely adjacent cylinder bores and method of making the assembly. In the zone of adjacency of the combustion openings in the gasket assembly, part of the gasket body material is absent. Adjacent armoring is joined to form a bridge at the zone of adjacency. The armoring has wires which are substantially greater in thickness than the gasket body material. When the gasket assembly is pre-compressed and compressed in use, the wires in the zone of adjacency are deformed into sealing engagement with each other.

  • Patent number: 4657264
Abstract: A pair of beveled-face load rings between which is confined a seal ring sub assembly formed of segmented, polytetrafluoroethylene seals. The seals too have beveled faces which slidably engage the beveled faces of the load rings and, thereby, are prevented from manifesting undue wear and extrusion. Three seal segments of the seal ring assembly form an inner seal which is slidably supported on a land formed on a three-segment outer seal of the seal ring assembly. A circumferential spring urges the segments of the inner and outer seals inwardly into sealing engagement with a to-be-sealed shaft or the like. Locating pins fixed in, and extending from, the outer seal nestably engage the inner seal segments and restrain the latter against unwarranted circumferential displacement.

  • Patent number: 4655462
Abstract: A coiled spring includes a plurality of coils with each of the coils being interconnected with one another in a spaced-apart relationship and disposed in a preselected acute angle with the centerline of the coil spring for causing the coil spring to exert a constant force in a loading direction approximately normal to the centerline of the coiled spring in response to a deflection of the coil spring along the loading direction. When placed in an operative relationship with a sealing material, the resulting coil spring seal enables positive sealing between cooperating parts to prevent passage of fluid therepast, despite small changes in the spacing between the parts which may change due to eccentricity and part dimension, wear, temperature, or pressure effects.

  • Patent number: 4650196
Abstract: A ring-like, radial, shaft-sealing element that is provided with a relatively rigid sealing member embodied as a molded member. The sealing member is spaced from a support member, and is connected to the latter via a spring member. Formed between the sealing member and the support member is a radially effective, free spring portion that, during a radial movement or wobble of a shaft that is to be sealed off, has a sufficient elasticity in order to allow the radial movement to be followed. The sealing member has a relatively great thickness that alone provides for the static and dynamic sealing of the sealing element. The sealing member is disposed in a recessed portion of the spring member, with this recessed portion being opened in the direction toward the end face of the spring member. The sealing member extends beyond this end face, with this projecting portion of the sealing member sealingly resting against the shaft.

  • Patent number: 4650195
Abstract: A seal for an anti-friction bearing, which bearing includes an outer and inner ring and rolling elements riding between them. At the inner ring, the seal includes an axially outwardly extending leg or membrane, the radially inward side of which carries two axially spaced apart sealing ridges which are resiliently biased against the inner ring for effecting a seal. In the above axial membrane, there is an additional membrane of smaller cross section formed by a radial constriction of that axial membrane between the two sealing ridges, which makes the support of the axially outward sealing ridge more flexible. The distance between the sealing ridges is at least equal to the axial clearance in the completed installed bearing.

  • Patent number: 4645215
Abstract: A radially-sealing ring has a sealing element of a non-elastomeric plastic, preferably of PTFE, planar, annular disk having plane-parallel surfaces held at its outer circumference in a stiffening ring and cold flexed in the axial direction to form a cuff at its inner circumference which engages the shaft with bias. The disk has a thickness of from 0.3 to 0.8 mm and an inside diameter approximately 1.5 to 7 times its thickness less than the diameter of the shaft. The distance between the shaft and the line about stiffening ring where the disk is held is 2 to 7 times as great as the thickness of the disk. The radially-sealing ring is preferably for sealing the crankshaft of a two-cycle engine.

  • Patent number: 4645213
Abstract: A non-contact type seal device for a turbocharger in which lubricating oil is prevented from leaking into the compression chamber of the turbocharger over the entire range of rotational speeds thereof. The seal device of the invention includes a retainer mounted in a compression chamber of a housing of the turbocharger, a collar attached to a compressor wheel mounting portion of the rotor shaft of the turbocharger, and a ring provided on an inner peripheral surface of the retainer. An annular groove receiving the ring is formed in the outer peripheral surface of the collar. A first gap is formed between the outer peripheral surface of the collar and the inner peripheral surface of the retainer, while a second gap is formed between the inner surface of the annular groove and each of the inner and outer end surfaces of the ring. A threaded groove is formed in the inner peripheral surface of the retainer in opposition to the outer peripheral surface of the collar.
