  • Patent number: 4643437
Abstract: A controllable mechanical seal for sealing a shaft rotatable relative to the housing of a fluid machine includes first and second face elements having first and second radial surfaces. The first element is adapted for rotation with the shaft. The second element is adapted to be stationary within the housing. One of the elements is movable axially relative to the shaft. The first and second surfaces are adapted to define a gap within which there is a thin lubricating fluid film. An actuator is provided for deforming at least one of the surfaces so that the gap converges in a direction from a high pressure side to a low pressure side of the seal. A sensor is provided for measuring a temperature indicative of incipient contact of said surfaces. A control system responsive to the sensor generates an external voltage which is applied to the actuator to control the convergence of the surfaces and thus maintain an optimum thickness of the lubricating film for a wide range of operating conditions.

  • Patent number: 4643440
Abstract: Packing for a stuffing box for sealing a movable shaft including a sealing ring which is used together with a non-sealing compensator ring. The sealing ring includes the annular shaft sealing lip extending from said ring body along the shaft for contacting and sealing the shaft and a stuffing box sealing lip for contacting and sealing the stuffing box. The compensating ring includes a tapered annular protrusion having wedge faces for contacting and urging the shaft sealing lip toward the shaft and contacting and urging the stuffing box sealing lip towards the stuffing box when an axially-directed force is applied to the packing. The compensator ring is adjustable in diametrical dimensions so that contact is maintained between the wedge faces and the sealing lips and an effective seal is provided even if wear occurs on the sealing ring adjacent to the movable shaft.

  • Patent number: 4641842
Abstract: A shaft sealing device comprises a rotation shaft passing through a casing. A rotation ring mechanism is affixed to the rotation shaft within the casing, with a mechanical seal member located within the casing, with a mechanical seal member located within the casing and cooperating with one side of the rotation ring mechansim. A non-rotatable, floating seal member is also located in the casing, and is liquid-tightly fitted onto the outer circumference of the rotation ring mechanism. One side of the floating seal member contacts an inner surface of the casing, so that a sealing chamber for lubrication liquid is formed within the casing, by the rotation ring mechanism, mechanical and floating seal members.

  • Patent number: 4640516
Abstract: A packing resistant valve has a gate rotatably mounted within an angled valve body and an inlet face of the gate defines a concave recess for inducing eddy currents in fluid flow impinging thereon. The eddy currents direct fluid flow away from the valve body, reducing the tendency of the fluid to accumulate within the valve body. Because the valve body is angled, material tends to drain from the body under the influence of gravity. Also, the angled configuration results in the formation of an air pocket within the valve body, precluding packing therein. In one embodiment, a mechanical seal is provided to preclude fluid leakage across the valve stem. In a further embodiment of the invention, a diverter valve assembly is disclosed, which includes a diverter plate for preventing the impingement of fluid against the closed valve disk.
